Title: My first Pendraken / Vietnam USMC
Post by: Derk G on 03 July 2010, 12:46:43 PM
Hi folks,

I've posted pictures of my first 'Nam unit on: http://derkg.blogspot.com/2010/07/first-charlie-dont-surf-usmc-squad.html

I'm mildly pleased with the way the resculpted 'helmets' turned out. Some look okay, some look dodgy. I'll get there eventually, but may still succumb to the temptation of head swapping instead.

Cheers,

   Derk

Nice job Derk, well done.  You should have a go at the head swops, Derek H did one and sent it to us.  We've just moulded it and it's fine.

Nice painting :), what are the Two Fat Lardies rules like in general.

Actually that's an ace reason NOT to do the head swaps. When will the figure be available for purchase?

Derek, you listening? I need you to do some more of the ANZAC range. In particular the RTO, perhaps one of the advancing chappies. Thanks!

Hmm, that basically leaves me with the below to sort out:

- USMC bazookas (probably convert WW2 figure)
- VC LMG (probably use the prone viet minh figure, but it's the wrong MG...)

Bases - as I just wrote that up on request for the Too Fat Lardies list:

nce the figs are glued down, I use polyfiller (Dutch: Porion) to even
out the base. Base gets painted with brown violet #887 (the dodgiest
name for a green colour if ever!), drybrushed to middlestone #882 and
iraqi sand #819 colour (all Vallejo).

Then, after the figures are all done, I take out 2 sheets of Silfor
static grass tufts, 737-24 two-colour, early fall and 717-24 short
tufts, late fall. These tufts just get superglued into place, paying
attention no part of the sheet lifts.

After that, it's just matt varnish & hey presto you've got an uncle
called Bob.

Figures:

I work with a black undercoat. Below are the colours/areas in order of application.

* shirt & 50% of pants: russian uniform #924 - no highlight
* face: 50/50 sunny skin #845/khaki grey #880, highlight with summy skin OR #822 german camo black brown highlighted to 50/50 #822 and #983 flat earth
* helmet: base 50/50 middlestone #882/#833 bright green. then in sequence dabs of #983 flat earth, #924 russian uniform #890 reflective green
* pants (if not already painted): same as helmet cover but substitute black for reflective green, and slightly different style of dabs
* webbing 50/50 #988 khaki and olive drab, highlight with khaki
* rifle: black
* boots: olive drab, soles black if visible

After that, I wash with a mix of black and flesh wash, followed by a drybrush of #819 iraqi sand. The drybrush was too heavy on these, I will aim for lighter next time.

NB. Paint the base AFTER the wash goes onto the figures!

Feel free to have a go at some more if you have the time.  That first one has come out fine, so we'll get it added to the August Releases!

August releases... Nice codephrase. Will those be available for order from, say, July 5th?

;)

I'm going to  give the RTO a bash and the kneeling ANZAC with M16.

I also plan on adding bush hats to the viet mihn  with LMG and the NVA guy with the pith helmet and RPG

Unfortunately not, it'll be August 1st!   8)

We've got them master moulded, but we've got a load of other stuff to get into production moulds first.

Spoil sport!

Joking aside, that's way cool. I've got enough to keep busy for now anyway.

By the way, other than the WW2 US infantry with bazooka, am I overlooking any obvious alternatives for Vietnam USMC bazooka conversions?

:) You rock!

I don't own the Viet Minh with LMG (yet), am I correct that the LMG has the magazine sticking out the top?

The rest of the platoon is done as well now.

I cracked ahead painting another 2 squads and a corpsman to complete the first platoon. Quite happy with how fast I've been able to paint these little guys, 10mm sure is a pleasure in that regards.

The whole platoon
(http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4PPHTjia_BA/TDTqUmQec6I/AAAAAAAACxs/sMRRUBk-8_0/s400/DSC_3037.JPG)

At 12 men a squad, it's a lot of guys per squad. With 36 for a platoon they can also be fielded as 4 8-10 men squads when we need something other than marines.

Corpsman

After having tended to a wounded marine he's left with a mess of drenched bandages, the marine probably whisked away by a dustoff helicopter. The medic is a slightly converted ANZAC figure.

No. 3 squad
(http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4PPHTjia_BA/TDTqVSdHwKI/AAAAAAAACx0/zrwKw-z5EPU/s400/DSC_3042.JPG)
Some of the men in #3 squad. I particularly like the advancing marine cradling the M16 to his chest. A nice pose and very crisp sculpting.

On Patrol
(http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4PPHTjia_BA/TDTqV9kikOI/AAAAAAAACx4/TVFxZ73B9VA/s400/DSC_3044.JPG)
Here #3 squad has moved out on patrol in single file. Since I have not painted a single NVA yet, they're safe so far. I'm going to pause painting USMC for now, waiting for Pendraken to release the helmeted LMG figure that Derek H has done as a conversion. Due in August I'm not going to bother with resculpting helmets for the machine gunners any further.

So next up I guess will be some NVA. Now to decide on the uniform colour. Anything from green to khaki to nearly buff is possible.

Derek, they look really nice, how do the rules work to give the feeling of nam?

Im looking for a set of rules.

Derek is the other guy who has been posting his conversions ;)

I haven't tried the rules yet for lack of painted miniatures. But reading through them has me very eager to paint the miniatures and get cracking.

The mechanics certainly are solid as they are from the same line as "I Ain't Been Shot Mum", and the changes certainly seem to reflect the particular challenges of Vietnam.
