Hi I have just finished painting two acw army's for longstreet and would like to have a go at some thing to go with maurice i know nothing of the period
so any help would be great thanks
The AWI or LOA ranges are both sculpted by Cliba no are beautiful and I think fit the period
Yes I'd agree with Lemmey. Clib's sculpts are a dream to paint
I'd make that three recommendations!
Mollinary
Maurice has almost a 100 year time span so I guess it depends on which particular war you are after. I went for the Seven Years War period as the figures also fit the War of Austrian Succession, the final fling of the Jacobites and the SYW overflows into North America and India. The only downside is that Prussians in this period are very difficult to beat.
thanks for info lads LoA it is then
I'd recommend finding something out about the period before doing anything at all. Unless, of course, you just like the painting and don't intend to wargame at all.
yes i just wanted something t paint that was not blue or gray :P
Avoid Austrians and Prussians then
I HATE dark blue armies :(
And French (mostly grey). ;D
As are Savoy and the Dutch!
Try the Great Northern War, at least the Russians are in green. ;)
I don't care about them, I have Prussians.
Saxons in red?
The reason so many nations wore grey or off-white was because they didn't have to dye the wool. Or even bleach it.
If you want something colourful why not look at Ancients or Dark Ages?
The new Cathagininians look fantastic and the Celts in particular will give you lots of colour potential. In the Dark Ages Pendraken offer Arabs and Normans, The arabs can obviously fight against a wide variety of foes from Byzantines and Persians right through to the Crusades, which is where the Normans come in, an early Crusader army can use Norman figures.
If you want something simple, I'd go for the War of the Spanish Succession or the Great Northern War (or the new LoA Range). Uniforms weren't as fancy yet, which makes painting much easier. Another alternative would be Ottoman Turks, those are definitely a colorful bunch. You could pair them up against LoA-period Austrians (white coats) and/or Bavarians (light blue coats). The uniforms were fairly simple:

Russians can give them a hard time.

Indeed. I guess that's another wargaming-myth. Prussia lost a lot of battles during the Seven Years War.
Yes, but I wasn't fighting the SYW, I was fighting the Maurice rules which is why I'm going back to giving the Black Powder supplement another outing.
Phew, that's good to hear as I am getting my Black Powder Rules soon for SYW. :>
