Title: Whats the Tank / Gun ?
Post by: TinyTerrain on 11 November 2013, 11:39:33 AM
Hi,

Having yesterday dug out all my painted and unpainted 10mm WW2 in readiness for ordering a load of Germans for collection at Warfare, I found in a box at the bottom of the pile 3 units that I purchased from Pendraken at some point and don't know what they are.

ID'ing armor and guns has never been my strong point  :O) so if these are noddy questions I apologise, but can someone tell me what the 3 pics below are please (ignore the crews as I may have based French guns, for example, with British Infantry for use in AVBCW, also please ignore the AFV colour for the same reason)

GUN 1

GUN 2

AFV1

If any of them are legit for Brit/German use in Normandy 44, that would be a bonus too!

Thanks in advance,

Craig

1 no clue.
2 looks like a 6pounder, used all the way through the war from 42 on.
3 honey Stuart?

the Stuart looks like a very old casting/mould...one of the original Wild Geese ones perhaps?

1 is I think the 3.7" Mountain Howitzer BR59
The Stuart although used in Normandy had a different turret by then. The one shown was only used in north Africa & Burma AFAIK

Yep, 3.7" mountain gun, and 6lb'er guns, and the Stuart tank.  The tank could do with being updated in the future.

Yep, 3.7" mountain gun

This one in fact. First British piece to have a split trail, I'm told.

Hi Craig,

I have quite a few of those guns in my '44 German army.

The first gun is a German Light Infantry Gun. They were used through out the war by the Germans. There generally would be a battery of 4 guns in the regimental infantry gun company of every infantry regiment. They would also be found as 2 gun sections in armoured infantry and recce battalion heavy companies.

The second gun is a pak40 75mm anti-tank gun, used from '43 to the end of the war.

Cheers, Rob  :)

Thanks everyone

Rob, I think you may be mistaken, I don't think they are PAK40 or Le IG 18. The 6lber and mountain gun seem much more likely.

Cheers,

Craig

You beat me to it on the infantry gun. I checked back and noticed the model had a split trail which means it isnt the German IG. However the gun and breech look spot on which is what fooled me. I've had a quick scan for the 3.7" on the interweb and what I found looks nothing like your model, so I am now confused. (not difficult  :))

The other gun I was pretty sure about. Does you model have a piece missing? I am used to seeing 6lbrs with another shield infront of the main sheild.

All the best  :)

Rob, from the trails, wheel and the top of gun-shield I'd say Gun 2 was a Brit 6-pounder. Though my first thought was PaK40 tbh.

Trail on the model is square section, Pak was round. Wheels are small solid centre with fat tyres, Pak is large spoked centre with thin tyres. Top of shield is indented, Pak is flat.

I'm convinced it's a six-pounder.

Of course, "If the world is flat no amount of conviction will make it round and if it is round no amount of conviction will flatten it" :)

Definately 6pdr, secondary shield is hard to see in the picture but is there (perhaps the cut down Airborne version)

Yep, 3.7" mountain gun, and 6lb'er guns, and the Stuart tank.  The tank could do with being updated in the future.

The most noticeable issue with the Stuart is that the chassis is too wide. A simple cut lengthwise with a hacksaw and a quick going over with a file before reassembling removes approx 1.5mm which makes a great improvement IMHO.

Cheers,

Kev

Unless you accidentally cut off that little shield like i did on my first 6lb'ers  :-[

Sorry for being a bit picky but its #pdr not #lb-er or whatever.

As in 2pdr, 6pdr, 17pdr and so on.

The middle picture looked like a German Pak 50mm with a British crew to me but I might be wrong.

That was my I total thought, but then I looked under the barrel and at the top of the gun shield and that's definitely a six pounder.
