Title: Battlegroup help for BKC
Post by: count_zero99uk on 01 July 2010, 09:56:30 AM
Hi,

Ive been trying to work out what I want to do with BCKII. Im new to wargaming, as im sure ill have said before, and have been brought into the game by a mate of mine who is heavily into 20mm. He has a lot of stuff for '44 NWE and the Eastern Front.

So when I decided to take the plunge I thought, I know what ill do, ill go for early war. Should be interesting and new. Now the issue is this, yes it is interesting. But as ive only really just started reading about it i didnt realise exactly how one sided it was.

So I have changed my mind, just so I can get some use out of whatever minis i buy in scenarios that could have happened. So to make this easyer for myself, im looking at '44 NWE British and Germans to start with.

What I would appreciate is a suggestion of what would be good to get for both sides to do some fun actions. I know this is a large request but im a bit at a loss, but i am reading so my level of knowledge is slowly rising.

I do intend down the line to get into the early war, but to start with id just like to have a bash about

Thanks lots for your advice
Brian.

Have a look at the BKC starter packs on the main site. They are pre-packaged to the rules so no excess figures etc. They are also handily titled - such as Infantry Battalion, Mechanised Infantry Battalion etc ;)

Definitely go with second-string kit for the Germans  - IV-Hs, stugs and marders not panthers and tigers.  For the Brits its a bit simpler, but 6pdrs not 17pdrs for your a/t for example.  Also, BKC is the most fun (IMHO, YMMV) when you emphasized balanced forces. I generally start with an infantry battalion (about a dozen stands using stand = platoon) and add on to that.

It's a shame you didn't stick with early war as that period is far more balanced on the table than the historical results might imply. Some of the most fun games I've had are 1940/early 1941 scenarios or all infantry games in the Far East.

I do also enjoy the later games but I find them harder to balance, either the German kit is so superior that they wipe the floor with the Allies, or else the Allies have too big an advantage in numbers, artillery and air support.

I've got a variety of armies for BKC,
1940 BEF and German 10mm
1940/41 German, Italian and British for North Africa 10mm
1942/43 Japanese and Commonwealth 15mm
1943/44 German and Brits for Italy 10mm

Well I play North Africa July 41. It's fun but the English player has to be careful what stuff he brings to the fight.

just picked up early war Germans for the Eastern Front last month, it seems to be the most balanced period from playing other wargames, Flames of War & other such games. Cant wait to start BKC.

How are you guys basing your units? I have a ton of Warmaster Bases so using those for the Infantry, Flames of War infantry bases for the Tanks. Will this be ok?

Consistent basing is good, but beyond that anything will server.  If I was starting from scratch I am not sure I would base the tanks.  Guns and infantry certainly.

ah bum already got the tanks based and finished :( myself and a friend are doing it so as long as we both use the same basing we should be ok then :)
