Title: Next set of rules?
Post by: Nosher on 27 October 2013, 11:29:25 AM
Is it me or has it gone quiet on the release of new sets of rules in the past month or so?

On that theme. a few questions for forum members ;)

1. What's been your favourite set of rules this year?

2. Which new rule set has been a disappointment?

3. Which rule set are you most looking forward to?

4. Where is there a gap in the market that you're keen to see plugged?

1. Chain of Command - the dogs nads

2. Dux Britannarium - struggling massively to be bothered trying this, but not sure why. :(

3. Not entirely sure, nothing is really gripping me at the moment...

4. Spanish Civil War - still not settled on a set that I'm 100% happy with. Hoping CoC might provide the solution but have a huge hole in my 10mm terrain collection that I cant afford to plub!

I'd also like to see something new on the Renaissance front that isn't stodgy and doesn't involve a masters degree in maths/applied science

Not sure if they were released this year but fist Full of TOW's 3 is doing it for me at the moment for both Modern and WW2

Ten More Sons! is giving good results in playtesting so far. I'm pleased with the results, worried that American armies haven't got a hope in hell against Conquistadors.

Yes I have looked at tweaking Warmaster Medieval, but a good set written specifically for around the Italian Wars would be brilliant

Looking forward to Battlegroup: Fall of the Reich.

Chain of Command is it for new rulesets so far this year, for me. Definitely a good buy, lots of fun games and a nice change from the BKC2 games the group have been playing.

To be fair I play far more Eurogame board games with the groups on Tuesday and Friday than I do miniatures games at the weekend these days.

Even though I know I already have more, perfectly good, sets of rules than I will ever play I also know that somewhere out there lurks another new set of rules that will lure me in to spending money I don't have on figures I don't need for a ruleset I'll never play in a period I know nothing about :)

Saga, Dux Britanniarum and Longstreet are all singing their siren songs :-)

1. What's been your favourite set of rules this year?
Dux Bellorum has been great fun and CoC looks very promising. I have my first proper game with Craig next Saturday.

2. Which new rule set has been a disappointment?
Not really new but Maurice never got the time it probably deserved. Major problem for me is that it doesn't work solo and I must admit I don't really like card driven games.

3. Which rule set are you most looking forward to?
CoC as I've only had a demo game so far.

4. Where is there a gap in the market that you're keen to see plugged?
BKCII and CoC nicely plug the Inter-War period for me. But I think a really good WWI Early war(before they dug-in) ruleset would be nice. I've always found the ECW to be a disappointment so something that would help this period would be good.

tricky,
1 - not a wargame as such but definitely Star Wars: Edge of Empire

2 - I suppose all of them as nothing's really rocked my boat this year

I can tie 3, 4 and your footnote together with one answer

I'm waiting on Impetus: Baroque, due for release "by Salute"  :D

That will cover my renaissance itch nicely I think and fill a hole  :o

The other gap I'd like covered is a GQ derivative for pre-dreadnought stuff, tried a bunch of other rules and they're all a bit too nerdy for me. OK that's two answers I guess  ;D

1. Chain of Command (followed by Dux Britannium actually!) ;)

2. Nothing as the only new rules I've in recent months is CoC.

3. Again nothing at the moment.

4. A good, fun and simple set of rules for Martian tripods would be nice.

Can't really answer the questions in that order as not sure what is coming out. Have three favourite sets this year: Longstreet, Dux Britanniarum and Square Bashing. My all-time disappointment was Field of Glory and I never took to Flames of War either, but then WWII is a reading period for me rather than a gaming one.

As someone who find commercial rules the biggest yawn in Christendom (after X-factor, sport and Daniel Craig) what do you chaps look for in a rule set?

Fun, and someone else to have done all the research

1. What's been your favourite set of rules this year?

Battlegrouop Kursk -got this year although it came out earlier.

2. Which new rule set has been a disappointment?

Dux Brit - same feeling as Nosher. period is interesting but just can't seem to drum up any enthusiasm :-\

3. Which rule set are you most looking forward to?

Battlegroup Fall of the Reich - main period of interest in WWII for me; Just hope it's not going to be a rehash of Kursk and end up being the answer to question 2

4. Where is there a gap in the market that you're keen to see plugged?

Something for the Russian Civil War and early WWI when things flowed.  Looking at PP's Square Bashing but not convinced by what I've read so far. HAve foudn various RCW sets on the net but seem to depend a lot on cards and that's not my thing.

Favourite set:
The One Ring.... okay not exactly wargaming but I ran a campaign for the best part of a year
Found Tusk the other day. Funky little game

Most dissapointing
same set...index is dire, the first adventure supplement was okay, but then again I struggle with bought adventures.

Most looking forward to:
Something that will allow me solo play on a fantasy setting.

As for the last...
Haven't got a clue
