What ho chaps, with a bag of colonials on my way up North sometime, I was wondering what rulesets are out there? I was going to base everything up like warmaster, however I am now not sure... any help greatly appreciated.
Cheers
Stephen
Black Powder covers Colonial wargaming, so might be worth a look.
I'm actually writing a TooFatLardie style set for big battles, if you're interested.

Hello Maenoferren
My first reaction is to look at the Free Wargame Rule site and poke around. My current favourite from there is Science vs Pluck ( http://www.tinywars.com/download-page (http://www.tinywars.com/download-page) ) which is a Pony Wars style game for either solo play or where all players are on the same side. But that's just me. There's also Black Powder, and more skirmish style rules than you can poke a stick at. It's hard to advise you unless we're more sure of what theatre and style of game you want to play, ie Sudan, company level etc. Othe rpages to look at:-

What a terrible temptation to put before a recovering Wargame Rules Junkie (WRJ).....
Well, I wasn't really recovering but I was thinking of starting any day now....Be interested in hearing on what you're doing with the rules.
Cheers
GrumpyOldMan (almost recovering WRJ) :D
Battles for Empire v2 does it for me
It covers the period 1870 to 1914 and and gives both European and Native armies the chance to win
The rules are simple and can be played with any number of players
We use it for the Sudan, Zulu War, the French in Mexico and the Russo-Japanese War
it's only available as a pdf at http://www.hotzartworks.com/bfe.html
The yahoo group has several scenarios at http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/BattlesForEmpire/
Some of our battles
Maiwand http://stenicplus.blogspot.de/2013/07/bfe-aar-maiwand.html
Kirbekan http://stenicplus.blogspot.co.uk/2013/09/battle-of-kirbekan-bfe-v2-aar-sept-2013.html
San Lorenzo http://twomarshals.blogspot.co.uk/2013/10/san-lorenzo-french-mexican-aar-using.html

I've got an older hardcopy (well, it's paper, so not really that hard...) of Battles for Empire and we're going to testplay it for the 2nd Boer War at Antwerp in 2 weeks.
Does anybody know of the differences between the (original?) paper version and the PDF versions...?
Cheers,
Rob
The main difference between BFE V1 & V2 is the Combat Chart and the casualties per unit making the game a lot bloodier
In V1
- the Combat Chart is 1 hit is disordered, 2 hits is Shaken, 3 hits is Shaken and 1 kill and 4 hits is Shaken and 2 kills
- a unit is removed on the 4th kill
In V2
- the Combat Chart is every hit is a kill plus disordered on 1 hit and shaken on 2 or more
- a unit is removed on the 8th kill
Also small arms units can now move and fire with a -1 modifier
There are other minor changes

In between all the other stuff, I'll try and find this then.

Thanks Shedman, I'll keep this in mind when playing the Original rules.
If it takes too long we'll step it up a notch!
Cheers,
Rob
If you are doing the Boer war then it might be worth trying V1.75B :)
This is Version 1 rules unless superseded by the V2 QRF
You can find the QRS here
http://f1.grp.yahoofs.com/v1/cIBiUo26wWMdz_VjPAmFR7aaRyx3k2DDylNTAaGHYcIMcb4QEJkiH_OwA9Bg3PstvhvF1GIzFDB6vgpGU-IFXOKIqJQmSz1i7LQq/Player%20Game%20aids/BFE2%20qrs.doc
This will give the Boers a lot more fire power ie every hit kills

Thank you for the link, going through stuff now while chuckling maniacally to myself :D :D. Like card driven rules and TFL in particular so will enjoy going through these.
Cheers

No problems - if you have any feedback, please do let me know as it can only help make the final product better.
Kind regards,
Richard
If you want a taste of Old School - the Soldier's Companion rules give a good game for both colonials and VSF. Honestly the unit sizes suit 10mm better than the 25mm they were designed for.
