Title: Childhood trauma infulenced my tank choice...
Post by: fsn on 07 October 2013, 08:00:28 AM
I was looking at my US Shermans today. Gazing at them lovingly whilst flexing the rapidly healing elbow and wondered why I felt such antipathy to them. I've never liked Shermans. Yeah I know they were produced by the truckload and they were reliable. I also know they were prone to fire and the 75mm was barely adequate. I always felt they were the first disposable mass-produced military hardware, not expected to last long, but hey, we've got thousands more.

But, as I pondered my little tanks huddled in their box, I  had a realisation. My antipathy to the Sherman is not based upon their historical qualities, but due to the fact that they remind me of Daleks. If the Daleks ever built a tank, it had a turret like a Sherman.

As a chilld I spent many an evening hiding behind the sofa as these mechanised monsters roamed the spaceways. They move like tanks, they look like a Dali-esque tank and their top turret is the same as a Sherman.

I feel a Sherman-Dalek hybrid coming on!

By the way, I also feel a Churchill Crocdile looks like a Crocodile, but I'm quite happy with that.

This is an appeal on behalf of the FSN foundation.  There are thouands of people just like FSN across the UK and they desperately need your help.

If you can give just £3 a month...or whatever you can afford...we can go on helping them.

All FSN wants is a normal life...a life like yours...the FSN Foundation can provide that.

We have hundreds of testimonies from those we've helped...like this one (the name has been changed to protect the vulnerable):

"I used to obsess over tanks...day and night that's all I'd think about.  Where was my next tank coming from...where could I get money to score a new tank.  Thanks to the FSN foundation things have really turned around for me.  I can see a pewter free future."  B. Fenton

We receive no government money but, with your help, we can create a "pewter free future" for FSN and those like him.

Please call today.

Sets 'em back months...seriously.  We had this shifty little fellow from the North East get in here once peddling all kinds of pewter filth  >:(

"Shiny shiny" is, I think, the street name he used.  He went by the name of Lion (or something like that) but I reckon he's just the pusher...

I would have thought the grant/Lee with turret/eye stalk hull mounted main gun/death ray was closer?

Only one crew member to drive, spot, load, fire and communicate. Daleks must have been Italian or French design. Certainly no vorsprungdalektechnic.

I must confess I've always found the Sherman ugly, and that's what drove me to eastern front.

4100 served on the Eussian front. Gotta love lend lease, there's no front without a Sherman somewhere.

I can see your point there fsn... Does that mean that Sherman's can levitate up stairs as well?

THE PILLS! BRING THE PILLS!

This, made me have one of those little outbursts of  a cough/laugh in the middle of a public place..the looks I got. Horrible.

They looked at me like I didn't belong in the outdoors.
