I was already well into this project with the Norman foot painted and the knights and other mounted troops part way finished when I had a rethink on the base sizes. Everything was on 40mm by 20mm and I've seen on this forum the trend now for larger bases and they look better. So I completed the first unit of Anglo Saxons on 50mm x 30mm bases and basically crammed as many models as I could in 2 rows to try and give the effect of a shieldwall and mixed poses from AS2 and AS3 to give more variety.

Just got to rebase all my Normans now :(
Brilliant work Matt, excellent job on the shields.

Really nice work!
Mollinary
Very nice!!
Look great
Looking like a great, great fyrd!
Stunning: love the density of minis on the base =D>
Very good job on the shields. Indeed, large bases are a great choice. :-bd
Great work 8)
Extremely good that man. :-bd
Cheers - Phil.
Thanks for the comments guys.
Definitely think the bigger bases are the way to go. I'll need to knock out another 15 or so bases of these and some great fyrd, archers etc, so alot of models to get through.
Ace painting, Matt. :-bd
What rules are you going for? DBA and Impetus are designed to work with 60mm frontage.
Very nice indeed, Matt 8)

I don't game and haven't done for years, just collect and paint. They may see action someday (I have a copy of Warmaster knocking around) but base size is pretty irrelevant as the chances of me ever playing anyone other than myself is pretty slim. (I'm still in the closet ;))
Ahh, but one day I may have some time in Salopia, and may challenge you! ;)
Surely that's like subscribing to Playboy and only reading the articles?
Still, it takes all sorts.

and I may accept that challenge! (you can bring the wine gums)

Nope, its like subscribing to Playboy and only looking at the pictures :P
Wow! Great work, really! My compliments. =D>
Very nice!

Fantastic work!
Latest update on this project. The first batch of Norman knights (12 stands). I'm looking at 1:10 ratio so equivalent of 500 knights.
The models are ok but not up to the standard of some of the newer sculpts and only 2 poses so I've tried to vary the bases to try and make them look more individual.
(banners still to be added - ran out of graph paper)

Wow =D>
Brilliant Matt
Excellent Matt, you've really made them look great. I wouldn't realise there were only 2 poses if you hadn't mentioned it.
Are the shields all hand painted, they add a really nice splash of colour to the figures.
thanks guys
QuoteAre the shields all hand painted, they add a really nice splash of colour to the figures.
Yes all hand painted (can you get transfers this small?). Been a right bugger done about 200 shields now and all different designs as far as I know 8-}
(apart from unit leader and bannerman which have same design)
Brilliant Matt! Really look superb.
For banners I use credit card bill envelopes, nice, pre folded and light paper, takes paint really well!
Those are very nice indeed.
Absolutely beautiful, Matt 8)
Great work Matt and the different shield designs really break up the uniformity of the poses 8).

Hadn't even noticed the repetition.
Even better :-bd
Absolutely superb work. Well done.
Phil
Absolutely stonking !! :-bd =D> =D>
Cheers - Phil.
Fabulous looking unit.
Great looking figures
Nice, authentic-looking mass of armoured men, Matt. First class work. 8)
thanks for the positive comments.
I've got 6 bases of skirmishing cavalry (18 models /180 men) and 6 bases of archers (48 models/480 men) to just tidy up. Then just another 40 or so infantry to bring it up to 12 bases (164 models/1640 men).
Hopefully by the end of next month I'll have represented 2,800 of William's army. I may need a break then and paint some zombies/Mongols/Dacians/WW2 Germans/US Vietnam/new purchases...
Extremely nice
take care
andy
Just to resurrect this topic.
Finally finished all the Normans I have now. All on bases, just need to flock the bases and add banners. Hopefully be finished by the weekend.
12 stands of infantry (156 models)
6 stands of archers (48 models)
12 stands of knights (48 models)
6 stands of skirmishing cavalry (18 models)
Quite chuffed with the results, pics soon.
Bet they are good!
Just seen these, wonderful :-bd =D> :-bd =D> :-bd
Really looking forward to pics of the rest
The finished force so far.

Forget the 'rather', I am jealous!
Excellent work Matt.
I really like the shields, hand painted I assume? and the whole force looks coherent, without being uniform.
:-bd :-bd
Very nice indeed
Take care
Andy
Lovely work! :o
Mollinary
Those are stunning!!! Great attention to detail across all the minis. You should be proud of yourself.
Thanks for the comments guys.
Unfortunately photos aren't the best as my son totalled one of my lamps as I was setting up so there is a bit too much flash glare.
I've been dodging around this lot for a while so it was nice to get them finished. Might be another 12 months or so until I revisit the dark ages and really crack on with the Anglo saxons, currently engrossed in the SYW (pics of those soon).
QuoteI really like the shields, hand painted I assume? and the whole force looks coherent, without being uniform
Yes Fred all shields and banners hand painted. It was a tricky one with the colours to try and get a coherent feel and still look a bit individual so I chose a limited palette of greys, blue grey and browns with a splash of red (Frankish palette in my head) and then whatever I fancied on the shields. The Anglo Saxons will be more earthier- greens, browns, orangey browns etc.
Brilliant, Matt. Such a tragedy that they won't see action. :'(

You never know one day they might, but for now they are packed away in the box.

:)
They are *superb* :)
Somehow I have managed to miss this thread. Those are really great looking figures and bases. The shield and banner designs and colours break up the monotony of the armour and make for a riot of colour that is particularly eye catching.
Excellent stuff, but I can empathise with the fascination for the SYW.
Stunning.
Wonderful figures, makes me want to stop painting Romans and start painting Normans!
Beautifully done 8)
great paint, indeed
Sorry Matt.
Must have missed the previuos page while the old PC was playing silly b's.
STUNNING !......Awesome work ! :-bd =D>
