Title: Mongols
Post by: get2grips on 10 September 2013, 10:03:49 PM
Wrong thread???

Whilst waiting for the Mongols to arrive (known in the trade as FSN Syndrome) I have been play-testing some new rules.

I've created a trial list using all of the forthcoming codes and some other Pendraken goodness.  I've researched Mongol mythology and have added two monsters: Gollums (given that early Mongols believed the first men and women were made from clay) and the Mongolian Death Worm (which is still rumoured to live in the Gobi desert).

So, if anyone would like a copy of these "rules" ping me and they're yours.

Finally, anyone know of any other Mongol mythology I could include?

Cheers,

Gareth

Fantasy additions for Mongols sound cool. Mine are more than likely to end up fighting Orcs and undead.

What figures are you using for the golem and worms?

Death worms ?....I like cryptozoology. (But I don't seem to be able to spell it) =)

Golems are going to be Trolls painted a sort of reddish stone effect. FT 1-4
Death worms are going to be giant worms FW 1-2

The golems are essentially have troll stats (they need the foot sloggers) but the worms are uber nasty infiltration troops.

From what I remember :-\ didnt they believe in a black pegasus, some form of yeti type beasty, a rock monster (may be the same thing as the Golem and of course not forgetting the Gobi desert deathworm :D

So, here they are.   :)

Let me know what you think guys  :-bd

If Played the game I would, but nicely put together.

Spell suggestion:
Fear of darkness
Mongols believed demons lurked in the darkest night. A shaman can trade part of his soul for a helping hand from the darkness. You can strike one enemy character before the game begins (insert chance of success here) but at terrible risk (chance of failure here)
Something like that...

Yeah, the spells are taken straight from the rulebook: WM doesn't use magic that as huge effects.

Love the spell name  :-bd

What about the Deathworms?  Too powerful?

Maybe...10 hits is a *lot*...especially with its deployment, 5 attacks & Terror...a touch too much?

I like the deployment, certainly has to be Terror-causing & 5 attacks makes it hard-hitting (which seems right) - maybe tone the hits down to 8? It does have a 5+ save, after all...

Interesting list.

Just a couple of points.

Firstly, Golems rather than Gollums surely?

Secondly I think the Deathworm is too powerful, other than that I like the army.

Deathworm - with 10 hits it's worth about 250 points, with 8 it's worth about 175. Hard to factor in the deployment rule so points might still need an increase to cover that.

I wrote the Albion Army List for Warmaster (which they got wrong when they published it! <rankle> <rankle>) and my advice is playtest it with anyone who will stand still long enough. It's amazing what players will do with apparently sensible army lists! :)

Agree with all of this.  I wanted to portray toughness but probably went a bit mad  :)

Attached is revision: with Golems  :-[

No-one commented on infantry based cavalry  :o

I'd change

"If a deathworm suffers 6 or more hits in a shooting or combat phase it is badly hurt.  Once badly hurt its stats are reduced to 3/5."

to

"If a deathworm suffers 4 or more hits in a shooting or combat phase it is badly hurt.  Once badly hurt its stats are reduced to 3/4."

It makes it more consistent with existing WM monsters.

All IMHO, of course. YMMV

Are your points for WMA or WM Fantasy? If for fantasy they seem a bit high for the heavy cavalry?

Fantasy.  But the points take into account the bow fire which, for essentially 3/3/4 cavalry, the bowfire makes a massive difference.  Can't charge em, don't want to be charged by em.  The perfect unit...MONGOLS  :D

Cheers for the feedback  :-bd

Anyone else agree / disagree?

Also, I have play-tested this one to death with Samurai: created my own list for that too (you cannot underestimate the power of defensive bow-fire for troops of this quality).

Anyone want a copy?

Indeed the Araby camels at 3/3/5 with shooting are very good.

I feel that heavy cavalry are far too cheap in WM fantasy anyway. But if you take the 110 pt knight as the standard, then probably 130 is enough for a shooty version

I like your light cavalry take. Do they have 30cm shooting range?

Yeah, I thought 130 was enough until I play-tested it; a chaos knight is 4/4/4.  On a charge, shooty heavies are 4/3/4 and, although they are only 3/3/4 offensively, the shooting MASSIVELY compensates for cavalry's only potential weakness: being charged.

Glad you liked the light cavalry: seems to fill the infantry void (needed in WM) without making them too effective.  YES, they do shoot at 30cm to represent the Mongols' tactics and, at 75, they may be a little cheap but I think (as Priestly himself says) you should look at the army balance as a whole.

Keep the comments coming guys  :D

Hi get2grips,

my comment in this list, again only suggestions and trying to be contructive:

1) Like the mood and the originality.

2) Peasants maybe not an important arm in the mongol life. I would drop the entry. If you feel this type of troop is needed, I would change the name to camp followers or anyting like this because peasants reminds me agriculture style of life instead nomadic style of like.

3) Light cavalry based in long edge in WM fantasy could be ok if it is an special of only mongol list. But I would not let them to enter in difficult terrain... at last this is a horse style list and they have gollems to assault difficult terrains and archers to force enemy out of the difficult terrain.

4) Special 2 still Gollums instead gollems ;)

I think the list is great!!

Did you playtested it?

Do you want to publish it in WM & 10mm digest nº3 ?

Not playtested yet as I am waiting for Techno to get a move on (you know I'm kidding right Phil  ;))

As for peasants, yeah, I prefer the camp followers name.  Historically they would.t have fought but have you seen the greens???  Couldn't leave em out.

As for the light cavalry I think they need replacement, cheap(ish) foot slooggers.

If you want them in the digest...do it  :)  I'm not prissy  ;)

We are editing n2 to be released in mid/late october.

nº3 will be released (if nothing wrong happens) to february. I think this list has potential, and you are the author so I will publish what you give to me. There is time to prepare a little text and illustrations, if you want to, and make a playtest if you want to also. If you feel improvement or changes needed during the playtest do them.

If you prefere to wait until the miniatures are out and prepare pics of the figures will be ok by me. It could go for digest nº4 or whatever.

Also this type of article could attract buyers of pendraken figures and one of the goals of the digest is promoting warmaster but also 10mm figures and rulesets based in 10mm figures.

you could pm to jchaos79@yahoo.es

cheers
