And they're here! After the success of our 'Not-Kickstarter' Mongol project, Techno has gone and produced what are quite simply fantastic sculpts! This first batch is mainly the foot codes, which were done while we've been moulding and casting the new pony dollies, so Phil will be moving onto the mounted chaps next!

Definitely think the civvies and campies will be coming to live in my lead hillock ASAP! :D
Also, take the civvie with the staff, add the archers and you have the core of a "Father Christmas and his militant Ice Elves" HotT army :-\ :d
Just need some fur-trimmed spearmen and a polar bear or two to complete the project! Did anyone else read about the famous northern legion of reindeer mounted Mongols?! They must have existed or I'd never have thought to mention them... ???
Cheers,

Tin snips, craft knife, brass rod - I'm sure these could become your spearmen. You'd only need seven - one with red nose :)

Who are the Kudos ?
No...Don't give them to me !

Right team.....
Question for you.....'Cos I cannot find the thread 'wot it was in !!'
I've got to do a camel for the 'musician'/nacarra drummer for these chaps.
Someone asked about having a completely 'nude' camel, that I said I'd convert at the same time.....as that one will be pretty quick to do.
Now.....The existing camels in the range are (I assume) Dromedaries......Please shout if I'm wrong here !!
So.....Question)......I'm assuming the nude camel required is a Dromedary ?....Yes ?
The mongol one has got to be a Bactrian....That I'm happy about.....Though it means 'chopping it about' a lot more...and making the legs shorter.
All for now.
Cheers - Phil.
Dromedary from Africa and Arabia one hump
Bactrian from Central Asia two hump

Hi Phil,

A dromedary would be cracking - that's what's in the extant ranges after all. Nude bactrian (and lama) would also be fine with me ;)

We could maybe look at varying them very slightly, but at this stage the alternative would mean a delay getting more horse dollies done from scratch.
Looking good gents, Love the life and fluidity in these, brilliant techno.
I agree about a little more variety in nags, but at least it won't be as bad as the old nineteenth century ranges.

Thanks all for the compliments.... :)
The heavy cavalry will be winging their way up to Leon tomorrow (with luck).
Just a couple of quick questions and comments.
I'm going to do the mounted command as fairly 'static'....As the camel/drummer once finished, will be relatively stationary....and I think it'll look odd to have the standard bearer and Mr K charging forward if that's the case.......Your thoughts ?
Other note.....The keshik ?
Got a photo of what I'm guessing is a 'reenactment' group, which have a couple of bodyguards standing in front of the representation of a General or GK.....Alternative enough armour to make them different from the rest of he cavalry.....Unless anyone can pop up a decent pic.....
What is everyone expecting them to be armed with ?
I've looked on the net but can't find anything that seems useful at all. (unless I've got the spelling down incorrectly ?)
Sorry to be so brief ! ;) ;D
Back to the putty.
Cheers - Mr Uptohiseyeballs in the swamp....(I think I've almost found the plug now though.)

WIP. This is the large one (45mm across), still need to add ropes across the top, retaining straps for the door roll, and the pelmet that covers the join between the roof and walls (see pic at the bottom). The 35mm and 25mm ones are of a similar construction but with slightly different door arrangements.

Stop Yakking!! :D
Were the Mongols as freindly with their Yaks as our Welsh cousins are allegedly as freindly to thier sheep. :D
The Yurts look really good. Please stop tempting me !
There is a story behind that. Easter my brother was staying, and me him and #1 son was watching BBC News Channel on Sunday morning. They have a half hour slot called "Our World" and that week it was Mongolia.
It starts with the presenter in a yurt. The family are eating camel stew with camel sausages. They then go outside to herd the camels. Mongolia basically makes the Moon look hospitable - a flat rocky plain covered in rocks.
Cut to Ulaan Bantor. Mongolia has basically gone Stalinist rather than Maoist. It has huge boulevards, squares and plazas, dominated by a 'People's palace' (looking sort of like Milton Keynes). However it is MINUS 26'c, so the place is deserted, except for the Guards- looking rather natty in their blue with red uniforms (think Gok Wan does Star Trek). Reporter explains how they have the largest deposit in the world of some mineral (bauxite I think). Cut to open cast mine. It has already cost some UK-Aussie company $50bn, but should be worth $13bn pa for at least 50 years.
Cut to old couple in shack. Explanation that the government is basically redistributing the wealth and giving the population $500 or such. Interview with old couple about what this means. Then comes the killer quote.
Husband says wife was very upset when favourite Yak died.

HOWEVER not every one is happy.
Cut to interview with man who is upset about the damage to the countryside by open cast mining. We are all going 'But its a great rocky plain of eff all! All an open cast mine is, is the same landscape, just lower! Its the only interesting thing between here and the horizon!'
How is this brave dissident registering his protest. Through the medium of rap. Yes, gentlemen, a Mongolian rapper.
Cut to recording studio. Man rapping (in Mongolian) while reporter stands outside sound booth, nodding along, hand on chin, with a thoughtful expression.
Cut to family herding sheep with voice over about how everyone is still poor.
One sheep tries to run off. It appears the traditional Mongolian way to herd sheep is to throw rocks if they try to run off.
Man picks up sheep, puts across body of motorcycle he is herding sheep on, and rides off into the distance - despite the fact that nothing can be seen for dozens of miles, except rocks.

I'm going to try, but it may be just a little too soon for them. The Yurts have arrived today (I think, there's a parcel at the depot for us), so we'll send them straight down to the new caster, and see if he can bring us a load to Warfare. The moulding of the figures is progressing, and we'll be starting on the production moulds this week hopefully.

Pretty sure any of the three could represent him at some point in his career, however the one of the left looks like it's based on the same source as this:

What is everyone expecting them to be armed with ?
I've looked on the net but can't find anything that seems useful at all. (unless I've got the spelling down incorrectly ?)
the
keshik or
kesig were armed with spear, bow, sword and possibly a shield. Carpini notes that shields were only used on parades or when guarding the khan. The fighting arm all rode armoured horses, possibly of different colours for each unit. If you can get hold of a copy (local library is the best bet for an Inter Library loan because on Amazon it is going for £254!!!) of Hsiao Ch'i-ch-ing, the Military Establishment of the Yuan Dynasty he has info on them. I know this won't matter to casting but they all wore blackened armour edged in red -even the horse armour. some of it may have been plain leather while others may have had metal or lamellar pieces attached. The armour was only on the head, chest and sides of the horse round to the saddle.
So, any armoured horses in the offing?
Also brings me on to my next point. Lovely little models as I said earlier...but...Mongols rode with very high stirrups so the leg was bent at right angles and yours are almost straight. Won't stop me getting some though.
Hope this helps.
MickS
I ripped off artistically reinterpreted what appears to be a massive statue of the man...There were just SO many differing 'concepts' to be honest.....But I hope you like him.
Cheers - Phil
I could only find one 're-enactment' picture Mick, and based my versions on those..
In the end I tried to make them look 'different enough' from the other cavalry....But still holding on to what I think is the 'spirit' of the K.
Armoured horses.....Up to Leon. ;)
Leg angles ?.....Difficult to be really precise when you have to 'mess around' with proportions on the figures at this scale, I fear.....Sometimes it can work so they come out 'just so'......Sometimes it'll make the figures look simply wrong.....But glad you like them enough to indulge in a few. :)
Having said that.....Useful info Mick...Thanks !
Cheers - Phil
looking again at the greens most of the legs seem to be bent at 90 degrees or near to it. IIRC on 10mm any horseman needs to ride with high stirrups or their legs fall off in the casting (I have a batch of Norman knights that appear to have suffered from not following this principle).
armoured horses would be nice though :D

Nobody in my experience ever models the leg angle right on those types that rode with short stirrup-leathers. It's like the angle at which one fires a crossbow (and, indeed, other bows too); by the time you were firing holding the stock level like a rifle, it would have to be point-blank. Innumerable contemporary pictures make it clear that renaissance and medieval crossbows were fired at a very steep elevation.
I'm also told that Highland regiments in British service didn't wear the sporran on campaign; don't know if the source was reliable.

Oh the lingusTics of technology of ballistics. NASA learned very early on that countdowns go 10, 9, 8, 7, 6... 4, 3,2,1 ignition.
Five too easily confused with fire!
I was always told arrows were loose shots were fired
British army changed from "Fire" to shoot in the early 70's cause shouting fire gave a volley of unaimed rounds going down range.

at the risk of being controversial and stressing this is just my opinion but i am underwhelmed
they are small even given that they are asiatic on steppe ponies
a quick comparision with loa cavalry highlights this dramatically
nice sculpts but lost in the smallness
sorry but just look nearer to an 8mm
i will honour my pledge and send an order for the remaining but i will look to sell and recoup
not a criticism but i dont feel these work like yr more recent ranges
I disagree completely.
I have compared them against my Ottomans and my Polish, they fit in great. Clib's LoA sculpts are a little larger than a lot of Pendraken's other ranges so is not the best to compare with. Against the figures I will be fighting them, they match perfectly.
Phew !
Thanks Ian. ;)
But I have to admit that I thought the whole point of the new horse dollies for the Mongols is that they should look smaller.
The 'humans' riding them should be as near as dammit the same size as all of PD's current figures. (Which, I'm guessing, isn't absolutely historically correct.)
Short of sculpting every single figure and horse...almost from scratch....Which would make Leon's designers' outlay for a range, far too expensive to be worthwhile...I'm not sure what can be done.
Cheers - Phil
The currently available LoA cavalry horses (which are used in the AWI range too) are intended to be large European heavy cavalry horses around about 16 hands tall, though its more about giving the impression of largeness rather than absolute scale accuracy.
Mongolian cavalry horses were ponies really, or about 12 to 14 hands, and if done right can look strikingly small, take a look at these guys from WW2
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/da/Battle_of_Khalkhin_Gol-Mongolian_cavalry.jpg
I might be wrong about this but wasn't there some discussion about Fireforge's new plastic mongols; people complained the horses looked to big, and Fireforge said the correct horse size looked too tiny? Don't quote me on that.
Interestingly much smaller horses are being done for the LoA range for use by the dragoons and hussars, and they will look oddly small next to the heavies;

Cheques in the post Clib ! ;)
I know we have discussed this before....But probably worth repeating
Seriously.....If i get the chance...I'll get Mrs T to take a couple of shots of me standing next to two (or more) of her gee-gees.
Me being, what was, around 6 foot tall (I bet I'm only 5'10"-11" now)....against two very different sized equines.....
The smaller of the two I'm thinking of, could easily have carried me in his youth.....And from what I've read...he'd have been the size that Norman knights would have used for battle....If he were a bit plumper...he wouldn't be too far off a 'Mongol' pony.
If I sat on him.....and made a (hopefully) proportionally accurate model of the pair of us.....I would make him look TINY.....We are talking 'My Little Pony', here.
The larger of the ones I'm thinking of is a 16 to 16-2 thoroughbred.....Whose Dad (sire) and Grandad (on the other side) both won the Derby.....(True !....'Billy' was rubbish as a racehorse, which was the only reason we could afford him, 'cos he was as cheap as chips.)
Now....If you saw a pic of me on 'Billy' (No chance !!....He's a dear old soul, but I wouldn't trust him not to splat me onto the concrete in the yard...he definitely has his moments... ;D ;D ;D ;D)......THAT would look proportionally 'right'.

mine also arrived today.
They are exceptionally well detailed but I would agree they are rather small. Not so much the horses but the Mongols themselves. They are proportionate in size to other sculpts I have that are done by Phil so are consistent in that respect. They look tiny compared to the Normans (men not horses) I have but these are a bit over large. I think it is impossible for every sculpture to match every other for size and proportion it just isn't possible they all have their different styles. That is why it is good that one model maker works on one complete range.
Overall I'm happy with my purchase and look forward to painting them.

At six feet tall, you probably tower over the average medieval Mongol, Phil!
i didnt mean to offend
i also query the size of the men not horses
i lived in northern china a year
im 6ft 2 and 15 stone but many chinese here were of a similar size and the mongolians i met were smaller but very stocky and gave an impression of real bulk
by being so small in size some overall heft is lost and the men seen in proportion and hence too slight
it is difficult to get things right
someof the polish hussars i have seem small in comparison to other polish cavalry but they are ols sculpts
the league of augsburg are european i know but the size makes them a joy to paint and they look magnificent
im sorry as i admire pendraken and all you do but these just dont do it for me
i was hoping to use kallistra chinese as enemies and accept the difference as being historical
i will still continue to use pendraken and think someof the figures are magniicent and work so well
cheers
i guess ill sell these ones and reinvest in otherpendrakens

Don't worry about it Sakura....
One of the problems, would be having to make SO many different sized dollies....Both horse and men....and the different combinations of the two combined that it simply wouldn't be truly feasible.....From both a time and cost point of view.
You're right....It's difficult to get things 'right'.....In many cases we simply have to compromise on proportions etc.....And try our hardest to make them 'work' or 'look right'....and whatever we do, by having to compromise, it won't look right for everybody.
Cheers - Phil.

Your comments are certainly valid and I agree.
But I can see the problem from Phil's perspective (I've been involved in model making but in a different industry). The horses are certainly right. If the Mongols had been bigger on the horses people would probably have complained even more about big men on little ponies - even though it is probably more historically accurate. It is a difficult one to compromise.
Maybe paint a few up and see what they are like. I'm still hugely impressed by the detail.
Matt
If I can find the time,I'll try and plonk something down in the next few days......Been meaning to do this for a while anyway, and try and explain some of the 'cheats' we have to use at this scale.
A lot of it is basically down to 'fooling the eye'....and by that, I mean making the figure look as right as possible (hopefully) on the tabletop, rather than necessarily physically accurate.
Just as a quick example.....A rifle....Such as the SLRs I've sculpted on the Falklands' troops.
In reality, on the model....They're actually a fair bit too long......But this is to compensate for the fact that a barrel on the model itself can't really be less than 0.5mm in diameter....And even that's pushing it a tiny bit as far as moulding and casting is concerned.
So....If we 'blew up' the 10mm man to life size, the barrel's diameter would be enormous......But by lengthening the barrel, it doesn't notice quite so much.
If I made the rifle itself, the correct length.....It would appear too short and 'stumpy' because of the 'fat' barrel.
Like I say.....It's very much down to the best 'compromise'. :)
And I hope the above makes some sort of sense !! ;) ;D
Cheers - Phil.
Thanks for the comments, all feedback is appreciated. I've checked the figures against some of the other ranges here, and the Mongols on foot within 1mm of the Napoleonic foot, so those are fine. On the mounted side, the horses are smaller by design and as requested, so won't look right against the bigger LoA cavalry as Clib has mentioned. Putting them next to some of the Naps/Medievals/FPW's I've got to hand, they're definitely shorter mounts, but not massively so.
I'd agree with Phil though that a lot of it is down to perception, and that if the riders were any bigger then we could have had complaints about them not looking right as a piece.
1st three figures painted (to my standard) from the MON 2 Light Cavalry with Swords - only another 347 to go

QuoteIt's very much down to the best 'compromise'.
Absolutely right. As long as the figure, tank, building etc look right, then I think the job has been well done.
Blimey...That was particularly quick off the mark 'Shedman' .....Great stuff ! :-bd
Cheers - Phil.

Or should that be Stalkey?
They look very good. I don't know much about the Mongols, except that their 'invasions' took place roughly during the 13th/14th centuries. I don't see much in the way of Asian/Eastern European opponents in the present Pendraken ranges - perhaps I've missed something. What are people intending to pit their Mongols against?
The new Mongols feature a couple of times in the new Miniature Wargames - including as a prize in this month's comp.
There is also a really nice team photo of all the figures - is this one you can post Leon?
Fabulous Leon, that has cheered me up...can`t wait to get mine......
Just to let you know the Mongols arrived the other day, (thanks very much), and despite what I wrote on my blog I just couldn't resist painting some. I will be posting the pictures both on this forum, as soon as the first unit is done (21 heavy cavalry -will be finished this weekend at the latest.) The little chaps look even better than in the pictures on your forum and they paint up a treat. Well impressed. The only niggle is the peg underneath the horses belly. I know it's a vent but on the galloping figures it's a bu**er to get at to remove and a so-and-so to paint because the hooves are so close together. But that's my only criticism. Otherwise the detail is crisp, excellent for such small fellas and there is only minimal flash. (Russians next, eh?) :D :D

The Later Medieval range, mixed in with some from the Norman and Saxon ranges make very reasonable Polish and Hungarians (pics in the Gallery and on my blog); the Arab range will do admirably for Mamluks and Khwarazmians and the Mongols themselves will do for...wait for it...other steppe nomad tribes before and during the forging of the nation by Chinggis Qan.
You see...with a name like Subedai...you know he's going to do a cracking job with the Mongols don't you? :)

I've not had our copy of the magazine arrive yet, so I've not seen it. The pic must be one taken of the samples I sent through to Henry.
