By popular request, 1870 Bavarians.
Snuck a few shots in the last glimmer of the Bank Holiday sun.
Will try to get some daylight shots later (maybe, if I can be bothered) :D.
It is missing 9th Jager at present, will try to add them into the next batch!

Cheers - Phil.
Very nice, Will, vey nice 8)
Hi ML,
Very nice work, well done with the painted flags! Can't quite make out the gunners, are they in dark blue?
Mollinary
Flags are Pendraken printed, gunners are darker blue, but not French or Prussian dark blue
Lovely figures Lemmey and I particularly like the shot from the flank - shows the figures off to great advantage.
amazing! congratulations!
From you that is high praise gents, thank you, :-bd

. So, have you applied printed flags to moulded metal? If so, congratulations, I could never get it to look that good! =D> =D> =D>
On the artillerymen, I had thought the blue should be as dark as Prussian and French, do you have any source that suggests a lighter colour?
Mollinary
They were bare staffs when I bought them, honest guv'nor!
I used the Osprey book, which describes them as dark blue, and the print which whilst blue, is no where near as dark as the Saxon infantryman on the previous page, on page 27, and took a punt!
Lovely job, the down the line pic really shows them off, great artillery ,
kev
Very nice. :) That is my next army after I finash a few Austrians and the Saxons
Nice looking formation, Lemmey. I've always liked your "diorama" bases. Very effective. 8)
Awesome work!!!
Really nice, great basing and very nice painting. great
The missing 9th Jagers have caught up with the division...

Again excellent work Lemmy. You are definitely improving with age.
Not that aged yet, only 40 in a fortnight...
They really do look great. ;)
Just think how good they'll be when you reach my grand old age then.

Ah, a mere stripling. ;)
Stunning work as always. I'm just not sure about the uniform colour:
(http://s14.directupload.net/images/131111/temp/9h3h45kg.jpg) (http://s14.directupload.net/file/d/3438/9h3h45kg_jpg.htm)
(I took this picture at the Bavarian Army Museum for future reference)
But I guess in 10mm that's perfectly fine...there's already more than enough dark blue on the field of battle with all those French and Prussians around.
Good photo JS!
It is always difficult getting the shade right for 10mm. I am in the camp which says you need to lighten the colour a tad because of the extremely small area that is being covered. That said, I think my figures probably come closer to your picture than to ML's. Cannot remember exactly what Vallejo colour I used on my earlier figures, but my later ones use the Foundry paints Bavarian Cornflower Blue triad. For gamers, I think the key is to make sure that it is lighter than whatever you are using on the Prussians. Matching it to the French is trickier, as their greatcoats were a much lighter colour than their jackets, but perhaps rather more of a grey blue than the Bavarians.
Mollinary
Great photo.
Mine are a shade pale, but on table the effect works. Vallejo cornflower blue over cerulean blue and azure.
Hopefully get the rest of the corps finished this week, but it's too foggy here to varnish them tonight!
:D
I seem to remember reading somewhere that, after a few weeks in the field, the Bavarian uniforms weathered to a mauve colour.
However, I agree with Mollinary and Lemmey that the guiding principle when painting any small figure is "paint light".
They look great. I am going to have a go at the Nappy Bavarians next so these are inspirational.
Nice pics. I've painted my bavarians in a light colour too, using GW shadow grey, washed with devland mud and then highlighted. I knew the correct colour should be a darker one, but, what the heck, at least in wargaming when myth meets reality, myth wins!
Excellent colour photo. Never seen a Bavarian uniform for real before, but certainly darker than I'm used to seeing. The reference to their uniforms turning mauve was in the fantastic Airfix magazine series on the uniforms of the Franco-Prussian War published years ago, but of a truly excellent quality. Still my main painting guide.
JS, I clicked on the photo of the bavarian uniform and my internet security flashed up a warning that it had blocked an attack by a web exploit kit from the site the pic is linked from, the page then replicated itself and I had to disconnect.
Just a heads up in case anyone hasn't got internet security.
Ry
Thanks for mentioning this. Checked it on google..seems like a lot of people have problems with directupload and received messages from their internet security (I never had [and I do have a security programme activated], but I wont use this page again for uploading pics)

The problem seems to be caused by banner ads at the side (not recommended to click on those, but I guess that's pretty much obvious). ..anyways, I hope this one works better:
(http://www.bilder-upload.eu/thumb/43ba2e-1384497194.jpg) (http://www.bilder-upload.eu/show.php?file=43ba2e-1384497194.jpg)
and just for the fun of it one more pic from the museum:
(http://www.bilder-upload.eu/thumb/b76050-1384497307.jpg) (http://www.bilder-upload.eu/show.php?file=b76050-1384497307.jpg)
(set zoom to 25% and then click on "Anzeigen" (=to show) in case the pics are too big)
Although I doubt that secenes like that happened too often (I read the debates in the Bavarian Parliament after 1866...some politicians wanted to abolish heavy cavalry altogether for being totally obsolete against infantry with breech loading weapons)
Does seem a little fanciful. But the uniforms look really dark in this picture. :-\
Bavarian Chevaulegers were always thought (at least by me!) to be a pretty darkish green, no? :-\
Mollinary
too much pressure to buy Bavarians instead of starting on French army.....AHHHHHHHHHH! and I don;t have my Saxons painted yet :'(
Nice paint job, they look wonderful
Wait til you see the next batch! ;D
Pics soon! I bet the look good too!
Can I at least get my Sudan figures painted? 15 British Camels to convert to Egyptian, 30 Egyptian infantry, 30 Cav and a pack of Artillery and I shoudl be done, then on to the Saxons.
Well at least this will give me time to make up my mind by the first of the year so I can place an order then. ;)

Is that green? Oh, dear, time to get the old mince pies checked again then. =)
They are very dark green in that picture.
I'd go for dark green in the painting.....Yep !
But is the uniform above the painting supposed to be the same thing ?
I see that as definitely blue....Maybe I need my eyes checking too.
Cheers - Phil.
No Techno, the one above is a Bavarian Infantryman, in the famous (but elusively avoiding consensus as to what shade it was!) Bavarian Cornflower Blue uniform. So you can postpone the eye check for a week or two ;)
Mollinary
Thanks M.
I guessed the answer was going to be something along those lines.... I had to ask though ! ;)
Cheers - Phil
Hi, i have just spent a romantic week end in Paris, and didn't missed the chance to visit Musee de l'Armè, for the great joy of my sweet half..... :d
However, remembering this discussion about the colour of bavarian infantry uniform during FPW, i took a pic of a jagher uniform exposed in the museum that is clearly light azure (see attached photo). Maybe the uniform at Les Invalides is an incorrect reconstruction (ie is missing the rolled dark grey coat) but i don't think so: I think that bavarian army may have suffered the fate of almost every army in the world during campaign, when bad weather, bad provisions or simple wear and tear make every standard uniform almost impossible to be mantained. So is quite possible that during FPW bavarian regiments could have wore both blue and light azure uniforms.
WR
Brilliant.
Your a brave man to do that.
Could also be the result of fading, as when Confederate grey uniforms faded over time to butternut, thus giving the impression that more Confederates fought in butternut than actually did.
Great Stuff! We can now all be right - and wrong - at the same time! :-\
Mollinary
There is no "right" or "wrong", Mollinary - only opinion. That's my philosophical thought for the day. :)
But what if you are wrong in your right to an opinion on a philosophy is that may be wrong? :-\
Or should I have left that?

They are indeed Paul. Single regiments on there own, Cavalry brigades two or three units to a base. Pity we switched to Black Powder shortly after I'd finished my third Corps as I can't be asked rebasing eight Corps now! ;)
Excellent, Lemmey. I've always liked your "action" bases. :-bd :-bd :-bd
Excellent work once again Will 8)
Looking really good. I really admire your tenacity with the 1870 project, I'm now faffing around painting early C16th stradiotti in 28mm courtesy of the Perrys.

Very nicely done.
Good work. I found the Bavarians to be a good break from the Prussian/French cycle I was in.
They do look good though, despite the boredom factor.
very nice
Very nice indeed
Take care
Andy
Nice, now I want ot order Bavarians when I really need to order French! AHHHH! :)
Bored you may be, but what a magnificent finished product. Funnily enough I was looking at the Bavarian involvement in 1866 and was quite surprised how much there was (and no I won't be buying a whole new army in field caps - helmets will do). Found out today that The Prussian Army 1860-67 is available on Kindle for less than a tenner.
Very impressive work!
Thanks chaps
