Post by: kyussinchains on 20 August 2013, 11:59:16 AM

I use Halfords acrylic matt black and matt white as well as Humbrol and Bolt Action spray cans.

At 500ml for about 8 or 9 quid the Halfords stuff has been good value.

I'd be surprised if they don't also do a silver colour too, given how many silver cars there are knocking about.

I strongly argue against Army Painter! The black primer smells VERY bad. The GW one is ok and if you can try the Vallejo one Leon has in stock. To my knowledge they sell it only via shows though  :-\

I have good experience with DiY stores own make BUT and that is the key to all spraying: You really gotta know what you are doing or you will drown your minis in juice.
For 10mms I would say use the brush (Leon sells the Coloro pack at 4 quid I think and it is all the brushes you will ever need) and Vallejo Game Color Black and VGC Chainmail. I sprayed my Dark Elves partly and found the brush to be more effective and faster.

If price is not the primary concern how about an airbrush?

Spray for me: hate brushing and, personally, find it doesn't give a smooth coat.  I use VERY cheap car primer spray: you can get deals on ebay eg:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/6-x-Simoniz-Large-White-Primer-Acrylic-Aerosol-Car-Spray-Paint-500ml-SIMP12B-/330912255061?pt=UK_Body_Shop_Supplies_Paint&hash=item4d0be84c55

Works out at about £3:50 a can but I use A LOT (painting service).  I will add this though:  the white coats beautifully but the black will need two coats if you want to avoid flooding.

They do silver as well but can't advise on that one as I only use black and white.

Hope this helps  :)

I'm with get2grips - I've moved to Simoniz car primers which I get (locally) from an ebay seller that I knew in his former life: so I get a great deal; I did practice a bit with some test figures before unleashing on my 'proper' figs - just to make the mental adjustment on how to approach using these; as g2g says, thinner coats to avoid flooding - and standing further back too...

Absolute bargain though - I pay about £2 / 500ml  8)

Hi Fenton,

This guy claims to ship to Ireland:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Simoniz-Spray-Paint-Aerosol-500ml-CAN-White-Primer-x6-/290959515683?pt=UK_Car_Accessories_Car_Care_Cleaning&hash=item43be89e023

Thanks mate...yeah a lot say they will but its the post office that refuses to send them so it usually down to an individual courier  by van via the ferry...I shall write and ask though

Sooner they get this proposed bridge/tunnel started the better!

Cheers

I've been using that too. Despite my cack-handed efforts I've not flooded any figures ... yet!

If you do flood one, I opened a thread on "top tips" to save the mini.  Just upend the can, spray until only propellant is coming out and then "blast" off the excess with the can upside down.  Works a treat.   ;)

With my recent clearout of surplus stuff, I've not used the post office for anything weighing more than about 350g as couriers are just so much cheaper...Parcel2go is your shipping friend: really easy to use, you can pay via Paypal (or card, or pre-load your account), print your labels & they collect from you...simples. I just sent some RPG books weighing about 3.5kg: postage quote from Royal Mail = £22+, Hermes = £6.79, including insurance for £40 & tracking  8)

Know anyone travelling via ferry? Or know a driver of a delivery company? A friendly exchange of words and a beer work wonders......

will give simoniz primers a test run then!

thanks for the suggestions, I much prefer sprays to hand primer, a better coverage and I find them much quicker

I've been using them for years so know how to avoid pooling and flooding thanks :)

I'm a big fan of the army painter sprays and have used most of the range, it's just at 9 quid a shot they can be a tad pricy, especially when you need 2 or 3 different colours for different projects!

Buy in bulk: considerably cheaper.  If you're only buying one can you may as well stick to Army Painter (which I also think are brilliant, especially their different flavours).

Think you're gonna have to trust me and Nik on this one  @-)
