All,
Over on my blog ( http://blackhawkhet.blogspot.com/ ) I've posted four new battle reports, all using 10mm Pendraken goodies. I'm playing some heavily borrowed but sort of homegrown rules for skirmish (men activating individually, as opposed to individually based but activating by teams) and got in four (yes, four!) playtest games this weekend. All four are solo games featuring fights between Brits and Germans in the Caen area during the summer of 1944.
The games were (relatively) quick and fun, and a great time was had by all ;D
I invite you to come take a look at the blog, it's free, and it's about 90% 10mm (with 80% of that being Pendraken). 8)
For those so interested, once I receive some mail from Leon I will be moving my solo skirmish gaming into the modern era.
V/R,
Jack
Very enjoyable report Jack.
Great stuff.
Cheers - Phil.
Hi bigjackmac,
I have to say that I absolutely LOVED your batreps.
I`d really like to see more of these, and look forward to seeing what else you put together... thoroughly enjoyable, thank you :-bd
Would love a peep at your rules sometime. I too am thinking of doing something for WW2, some time in my `things to do next` list. But I was thinking of using Gavin Lyall's "Operation Waroard" rules, from the 70`s. I always loved that set of rules and think they might just be perfect for 10mm.
I really like your 1 guy per base idea, especially because practically no one does this in 10mm scale, which I think is a crying shame (just a personal thing). I totally get the `big batallions` style of fielding large numbers of troops per stand because it promotes a realistic look... but to me (who chose 10mm scale in the first place so I could play the same size games as I would in 28mm, but on a small coffee table) this defeats a whole potential purpose of this diminutive scale.
My own ECW, Sci-fi and Fantasy rules do just what you do... individually based minis (I use Euro currency -1 cent coins) and I have a BALL doing it.
My own rules allow me to play small skirmish to pretty large affairs; from a couple of figures up to 100 or more per side.
Nice work,
Six 8)
Techno- Thanks.
6sided: I'm still working out all the kinks with the rules (all four batreps are essentially playtests), and haven't put all my solo-mechanisms on paper yet, but once I've got them finalized I intend on hanging them on the blog.
I'm loving skirmishing with 10mm. I'm putting about a dozen guys on each side and playing on a 3' x 2' board with plenty of room to manuever. I will say I've tried going larger (more guys), and it was still fun, but it really slowed things down, and I'm trying to keep things nice and breezy. Even on the small board I think the figure scale matches the ground scale and weapons ranges very well (small arms can reach across the entire board, SMGs are penalized beyond about 6 inches, and pistols and grenades only reach about 6 inches). The rules aren't very 'crunchy' (if that's your thing); my desire is to keep the mechanisms very streamlined in order to focus on decision making and allow for a relaxed solo endeavor. The rules are one page, front and back, with simple stuff like - target in the open hit on 4+, lt cover 5+, hvy cover 6, saves in open 6, lt cover 5+, hvy cover 4+, etc..., with few modifiers.
I got bored last night and rebased some WW2 US Airborne (Pendraken) and modern Special Forces (Minifigs- sorry) to give me some more options for gaming (I need to finish up some bad guys). I'll try to get some pics up on the blog. Also, I don't know if you saw it on my blog (under "Things I'm Thinking About), but I've got an order in with Leon for some forces I'm going to use for a Cuban Liberation "ImagiNation"-type campaign, as well as some stuff for French Indo-China.
Thanks for looking.
V/R,
Jack
Sounds like you`re having a whale of a time there, keep up the good work, sir :)
There`s nothing wrong at all with simple rules... a couple of pages seems ideal for a good skirmish game (don`t forget the penetration of LMG`s, MMG`s and HMG`s) ;)
Good luck on the new purchases. There`s nothing like waiting for posty to deliver a nice new package of goodies; then that initial opening ceremony accompanied by the Oooo and Aaaa as you slowly unwrap everything.
Good luck and all the best,
Six.
Good stuff, Jack - like six, I'm a fan of skirmishing in 10mm (although I love 28mm for this as well) - great reports, thanks for posting; I'll be interested to see how you get on with developing these 8)
Entertaining game reports, Jack. But when you solo game aren't you always going to get your butt handed to you? As well as winning gloriously? :D
Hertsblue,
Not in my case ("...always get your butt kicked and win gloriously.") . Plenty of guys solo by playing both sides to the best of their ability. I'm trying to use a (limited) pre-programmed opponent. I have to move his stuff around and roll dice for him, but he is most assuredly there. I want the experience of playing against someone, so sometimes I win, sometimes he wins. In my first five games I'm 2 and 3 :'(

Jack
