Post by: GrumpyOldMan on 12 August 2013, 10:59:16 PM
Hi

Saw these rules http://wargamer1972.blogspot.com.au/p/bat-cave-miniatures.html?m=1 (http://wargamer1972.blogspot.com.au/p/bat-cave-miniatures.html?m=1) and was wondering if anybody had tried them?

Cheers

Yes, but my Scottish spouse would only be happy if I can demonstrate that I had tried a cheaper alternative for information gathering than actually buying something  ;D ;D.

Have now let the virtual moths out of the Paypal wallet and bought a copy, will give a review when I have a chance to read through them.

Cheers

Well the fact that they are so simple, means i can easily bolt on any rules i want without much trouble  :D

The one thing that i find is nice and 'different' from other rules, is the fact that they have made machine guns into the area denial weapon that they are, instead of just firing more shots than normal weapons (wich is the case in most rulesets ) they use a cone shaped template (4cm wide i think), forcing the opponent to : either find a different way off approach (for example when it is covering a street, very nasty!!) , spread out and don't form tight packs of bodies, or suppressing the hell out of them just to try and get closer.

I find it a very innovative way to represent it.

What makes it uninteresting for some (i think) is that everything seems a bit bland, with vehicles (and units) using the same stats in different configurations. For the infantry this is fine, for vehicles It's a bit annoying. But then again these are skirmish rules, so vehicles aren't aplenty like in BKC. At least not in the scenarios i have in mind.

Also, i am only using these for fast and fun skirmishes, while using BKC for the real deal. But being so simple rules, it's easy to have a game alongside a BKC game, for example representing a team of paratroops trying to disable an artillery unit who is shelling the main table. With the outcome of the skirmish having effect on the main game. Real fun that one!!

Let me know what you think ;)

One note, having many elan ratings get confusing rather quickly, so i usually only give a higher elan to my officers.
