Title: WWI Figures Questions
Post by: fred. on 07 August 2013, 05:04:58 PM
I received a nice order of WWI goodies yesterday - and very nice they are too.

But there are a couple of figures I am struggling a bit with
British Trench Raiders - one of the 3 poses appears to be marching with slung rifle - and carrying something, (a stick?) in his right hand. This doesn't strike me as a very trench raiding poses - or am I missing something. The other two poses are good, a grenade thrower, and a shotgun armed chap in an open great coat - who just says "get orf my land!" to me.

British Toffee Apple Mortar - this is a mad weapon to start with, a giant bomb on a stick! The standing crewman has a two part stick in-front of him - is this a periscope, or is it a some loading thing?

German Trench Raiders
There is a guy with what looks like a cloak over his head, and a shield, and I think an entrenching tool - is this right - and what would the cloak be? And is the shield metal / painted with cammo?
The guy with the machine pistol - what is he wearing on his head? It looks a bit like a flying helmet?

German Storm troopers - the running pose with rifle slung on his bag, does he have a bag of grenades under one arm, and a stick grenade in the other hand?

Sorry for all the questions - it might be because the figures are still bare metal I am struggling to work out the details (or because I don't know a lot about the period, and some of the strange trench fighting getups).

I'll have to check on that one, it could be a whacky stick for hitting Baldrick...  :-\

It's a periscope.

Yep, just a cloak and entrenching tool.  Not so sure on the camo on the shield though?

Yep, will be.

What would the cloak be - a shelter half (or is that just WWII) a gas cape? I suppose what colour would it be is really what matters.

OK. Why?

Are these two from an Osprey drawing or photos or something? They seem quite extraordinary.

found this photo of the figure painted

Which suggests that the MP guy isn't wearing a flying helmet, more some kind of cover?

I think it's a gas cap, from old memories of when they were sculpted, that rings a bell in Dave's head.  It would be field grey / brown with a hint of mud!

OK. Why?

Dave says it's a type of leather hat?

OK, makes sense.

A couple of the figures seem to be similar to ones in the Foundry 28mm range (the german with shield) and the British guy with shotgun.

Struggling to google up any photos of small german trench shields - found 1 which is circular, and quite a lot of a much larger shield for MGs
