Title: BAOR
Post by: Rob on 15 July 2013, 05:07:47 PM
I came across a new addition to Dr Leo Niehorster's OOB site. He has added a modern OOB link to the BAOR 1989. I have added it here for anyone that is interested. (Must have a modern range) It also makes a nice break from painting Napoleonics.  :)

The background is as follows:

"1 (BR) Corps was faced by the Soviet 3rd Shock Army as the first echelon force with 20th Guards Army as the second echelon. The plan to defeat the Soviets involved 4 elements:

Firstly a screening force would delay the Soviet advance allowing the Armored Divisions to prepare their defensive positions and confirm the axes of advance.

Secondly the main defensive battle was initially fought by 1st Armoured Division (forward left i.e. north) and 4th Armoured Division (forward right i.e. south). 4th Armoured Division's area was more woody and undulating hence the presence of 19th Infantry Brigade in 4th Armoured Division. It was planned that 1st & 4th Armoured Division's efforts would force a Soviet echelon change.

Thirdly 3rd Armoured Division was to the rear and would strike to defeat the Soviet 2nd Echelon and seize the initiative. This strike to defeat mission explains why the STRIKER in 3rd Armoured Division's Recce Regt (9th/12th Lancers) were grouped into a single squadron whilst in the Screening Force Recce Regiments they provided a troop in each squadron to provide over-watch.

Finally 2nd Infantry Division defended the Corps Rear Area with responsibility for the River Weser as a back stop. "

The BAOR document is here, either for browsing or as a pdf. http://www.scribd.com/doc/146180392/BAOR-July-1989-v-2 (http://www.scribd.com/doc/146180392/BAOR-July-1989-v-2)

And for their opponents, tFor the dastardly Warsaw Pact 3rd Shock and 20th Guards here is another link:

3rd Shock has all T80s and 20th Guards all T64b. Nothing but the best for BAOR.  :-S

Did we actually have three armoured divisions and an infantry division? Sounds like paper forces to me.

We did indeed have 4 "Armoured" divisions, small ones with two brigades. Should be CHEIFTAINS, Challys and T80's

Also 432's, Warriors, BTR60/70 BMP1 and 2.
