Title: fittings for Zhong Shan gunboat
Post by: Sunray on 28 June 2013, 03:38:12 PM
A useful 1/150 kit for WW1/VBCW/early WW2 naval scenarios.   I have aquired one and was looking at sourcing  better guns/turrets than is supplied with the model.

Does anyone have experience of the1/144 Strikemodels resin items ? These are made for naval wargames (played with BB ammo on ponds where the defeated ship actually sinks!) The smaller aux. turrets do not work and are just eye candy - but look  nice and cheap -the US twin 5" looks very neat.  The 40mm quads are also good looking.

Like 1/144 aircraft, they will fit with 1/150 figures.  I see LSTs are also on the design boards - impressive for a D day game or what !

Oooohh....nice find James/Sunray,

I might have to pass the keys to the scrounger's cellar to you now...

Had a look at their stuff, might get some bits and pieces, at least they are a bit easier to get in contact with than HR who require me to get up in the middle of the night to call them in the US and organise orders  :). Was tempted by the supply and life boats but I don't know about the foam (presumably so that when they are shot off the ship, they float so can be recovered).

A few other places I found while looking around for bits and pieces:-

http://shop.modellschlachtschiffe.de/shop/prodtype.asp?PT_ID=93&strPageHistory=cat (http://shop.modellschlachtschiffe.de/shop/prodtype.asp?PT_ID=93&strPageHistory=cat) German site that has bits in 1/200 but handy nevertheless
http://www.freetimehobbies.com/weapons-13/ (http://www.freetimehobbies.com/weapons-13/) Weapons in 1/144
http://www.freetimehobbies.com/weapons-14/ (http://www.freetimehobbies.com/weapons-14/) Weapons in 1/200 (I'm going to try out the 45mm guns to see how they look on card ships)

In the middle of scratchbuilding a bridge/wheelhouse for my Zhong Shan, I'm using 20mm Oerlikons on the that deck and I'm getting some of the WW2 US A22 AA guns for the lower deck.

Cheers

Victor

You have surpassed your own high standards as the Forum's Number One scrounger.    You remind me of that character in The Great Escape.  These links are brilliant.  Beats anything I have found.  Thank you very much indeed.

Any chance of an image of your Zhong Shan when you have her "seaworthy"?   I need a little inspiration.

I note that the  freetime hobbies  site has naval figures in 1/144- that works out about 1.5 mm taller than 1/150- depending on the sculpting they might just fit with Pendraken?  Have you tried them by any chance?

As a matter of interest - is anyone else on the forum building/hoping to build this kit?

Thanks again

One of the attractions of 1/150 is that it allows combined ops-  the ability to call in a shore bombardment or unload troops from the sea - gives an interesting dimension to a wargame.

I have a number of PT boats and the Pendraken corvette which is a really neat model.   This size of craft is ideal as big warship won't come that close to the shore.

Certainly. I'm umming and ahhing at the moment on colours, should I paint it white and buff for the Yangtze or go for a light shade of grey to maximise generic-osity (have I just made up a new word?). I've also got to raid the sewing box to see if there is any non-fluffy thread in the right shade  :D. I have decided to keep visible figures to a minimum so if I want to run it as a Danube riverboat I don't need to stretch credibility.

No I haven't seen those figures but the only experience I've had with 1/144 figures (crew from the rail gun) is that they are a little taller but slimmer than Pendraken, elfin!! I'd only use them separately, similarly with N gauge plastic figures.

Yes quite right, more uses than you can poke a stick at!!. My main idea was to use the Zhong Shan in a "Pony Wars" style game as the fort, ie the source of patrols or the objective to reach. I've got some small boats found on ebay that I'm playing with as well (got a WW1 AA gun coming in my latest order from Pendraken) to come up with a Mimi/Toutou type boat. I'll have to have a closer look at the Siege of Tsingtao but I bet I'll be able to come up with a use for the Zhong Shan  :D :D.

Next maybe.....

Very pretty model - but I'm guessing not 1:150th?

Quite right, it was meant to be a humorous pointer 'in the style of' rather than an exposition of (non-existent) talent!  :D :D

I'm sure that I wouldn't be able to see most of the fine detail work at 1/150   8-} ;D ;D ;D

I was going to use the attached Runabout as the basis for an African Queen-esque model, as well as others. Please note everybody it hasn't been scaled.

Cheers
