Can anyone recommend a good reference work
for the above?

Assuming this is for 1866 ;) I would suggest looking at the Helion Books website where they have N.J.Smith's "Armies of 1866: A guide to the uniforms, weapons and organisation of the Armies of the Seven Weeks War" in paperback for 9.95 sterling.

Yes it is 1866. Thanks.

Osprey Germany and allies 1870 is basically the same, apart from the height of puklehaubes for Prussians, the allied states uniforms changed a great deal in many cases....

Or my old favourite Battledress by Scick

If you want colour illustrations I would recommend the Funcken book Uniforms and Arms of the of Soldiers of the XIX Century - Vol 2 1850-1900. The drawings are based on those the famous Handbuch der Uniformkunde by Richard Knötel and are pretty accurate. The book also give schematic diagrams of the relevant guard lace. Beware, however, the authors mix the uniforms of the various time-lines in together, exactly as Knötel did.
Also of use is the translation of the Knötel work, published by Arms and Armour Press in 1980, under the title Uniforms of the World

I have that and have seen the Knotel plates. It is confusing in some respects so I was looking for something a little clearer. I have ordered the book Mollinary suggested.
Thanks all

Chad,
If you have any questions once you have got it, I'd be happy to answer them on the forum. But that book is where I started, and I think it is pretty straightforward.
Cheers

PS My only caveat is, don't rely on it for flag information!

Thanks. You are a gentleman.

Chad,
Before your copy of Smith arrives, you might like to check out the North Star Miniatures website. Under its 1866 figure range it has some useful PDFs on uniforms for the line and guard infantry, although it seems to miss out the Guard Grenadiers, for some reason.

If using pickelhaub-wearing figures make sure you buy the figures with the earlier model 1860 helmet as this has the rear metal strip which runs back from the helmet spike. This was removed when the pickelhaub was redesigned in 1867. Both designs were worn in 1870. Strangely, Smith's book does not mention this helmet decoration although there is a photograph which shows it very clearly.

Thanks. I have the figures with a clear rear strip modelled.

Excellent stuff. The Austrians in greatcoat, particularly the Hungarians, are also lovely sculpts.
