Title: Aart Brouwer 'trophy'
Post by: Steve J on 12 June 2013, 03:18:51 PM
As we are all obviously shocked and saddened by the sudden death or Aart, how about we remember/honour him in some form in the annual painting competition? I'm not sure of his favourite period, but maybe one of the categories could by the 'Aart Brouwer Memorial Trophy/Award'?

Just a thought really, but I think it is a nice and permanent way to remember one of our own.

Thoughts and comments appreciated.

Funny, a trophy had crossed my mind, but as I had already suggested the card, I sat on my hands to see what the feeling was.   With 500 + hits on the RIP thread yes, I think it reflects the mood of the forum.

Could I suggest that - as a mark of respect - we at least ask Aart's family for permission before we run with it?  Death often leaves a family feeling powerless. Being consulted about the commissioning of a "trophy of rememberance" and indeed having the final say in the matter, is a small step towards empowerment, getting back in control and begins the slow journey towards closure.

It might also be appropriate to (a) send the card now and (b) wait a few weeks at least before approaching the family about a Trophy of Rememberance.

What do you guys think?

Sound's like a good  idea to me, on both card and Trophy, a nice way to remember someone who loved the hobby,

Gentlemen

As July draws to a close and Leon back in the office, it might be time to  carefully word the approach Aart's family and seek their permission to commission the Aart Brouwer Memorial  trophy.

I forgot to post that the card went out several weeks ago now, with the message from the Forum members in it.

We actually had a new member join a while ago, under the name Wendel Brouwer, so I'm not sure if it's a relation or not.  The member hasn't posted anything yet.

Here I am, I am indeed a relation of Aart Brouwer. His wife to be precise. I joined the forum to thank you for the nice card I received from Pendraken and the forum but to be honest...I forgot. Things have been quite hectic out here.

So thank you for the card, I felt warmed! Aart was a big fan of Pendraken, he sometimes drove me crazy with the numerous packages that arrived almost every day but I also loved it to see him so enthusiastic. He had the whole attic stashed with projects. Unfortunately, he didn't have the chance to finish it.

Hi Wendel,
I'm glad that the card and the messages on this forum helped in some small way.
Steve.

Hi Wendel, thanks for the post, and welcome to the Forum.  I'm glad to hear the card arrived safely as well.

Dear Wendel

You are most welcome to our little forum.  Thank you for your post. You have probably read the threads by now and are aware of our modest proposal - subject to you and family approval - to commission a 'trophy' in memory of Aart.

Like the majority of members I never met Aart, but I appreciated his wit and the humour he brought to our forum.

We would love to hear your thoughts on this memorial trophy  proposal.

Yours sincerely

James aka Sunray

Thank you for welcoming me. I won't be coming here quite often, this was Aarts thing and although I supported him as much as possible (I once called a tree he made from scratch a turd on a stick, at first he was quite annoyed but later on he told me I was right and he was happy with my input because otherwise he would have cut a sorry figure), I rather paint on bigger things then some tiny casted figures.

However I wanted to let you know that the reactions here did put a smile on my face and if you have any questions you know where to find me now and I'm will be happy to reply.

This is one of the latest pictures of Aart:

And this is in the summer before he got ill:

Dear Sunray and other members,

I think it's a nice way of remembering and honouring him, he really loved painting the figures. I think Aart himself would have laughed his ass of by the idea, he always was quite humble about his own skills (maybe not on the forum, I don't know that) but I think he would have felt honoured as well.
Have fun with it! I'm pretty curious of the results!

Wendel
