Title: Homespun flags for First Bull Run / Manassas
Post by: Tobbe on 16 May 2013, 08:11:14 PM
I've not been able to find any flags that looked "right" to me, so I had a go at tweaking some of the flags floating around on the interwebs. More examples at http://www.forward-to-richmond.com/2013/05/16/first-batch-of-homespun-flags-for-bull-run/

We looked pretty hard for information on flags (standards) when we were researching and then staging the games for Wargaming In History Volume 6, The First Bull Run Campaign (though we must admit that we were in 15mm, mainly because we started to build the armies long before 10mm achieved their current level of detail). The uniforms were easier to easier to find detail on than the flags, but of course the flags are more visible in a wargame. The flags carried by Confederate units varied as the State flags were replaced by centrally issued Confederate pattern ones. We are now starting to research the 1862 Shenandoah Campaign and the flags carried vary in the theatre on a month by month basis, so multiple command stands will be needed.
If anyone is aware of the definitive guide to 'Confederate flags, month by month', it might acquire the best-selling status of the ever popular and unputdownable 'Regimental Strengths and Losses at Gettysburg'.
