Title: Fantasy Rules
Post by: Nosher on 10 June 2010, 10:41:33 AM
Other than DBF and HOTT (both DBM derivatives which I am not that keen on) what fantasy rules are people using for the 10mm ranges?

Well, Warmaster, of course.
And some people even using Warmaster Ancient with fantasy armies is not unheard of (http://www.fbruntz.fr/tmg/necronomicon/wmmf.html), either.

Cheers chaps. I am looking for something between skirmish and mass battles so that I can use the pre-made army packs to keep expenditure down.

I guess I might have a rack at a rule set myself to see where I get

Check out Two Hour Wargames Warrior Heroes: Armies and Adventures.

http://www.angelfire.com/az3/twohourwargames/WarriorHeroes.htm

There are a number of Batreps out there if you try Google.

The rules work both opposed play and solo.

I'm working on a set of fantasy rules based on Too Fat Lardies principles, and The Feu Sacre in particular.

- battle level rather than skirmish level
- focus on command and control
- card based activation
etc

For info on the work-in-progress have a look at http://thisonesplit.blogspot.com/

They might be for bigger battles than you want to create, but Splintered Light's Pride of Lions rules are a lot of fun, with some highly interesting concepts, including 24 sided dice! :o

How about Songs of Blades and Heroes by Ganesha Games? They were originally written specifically for 15mm scale.

Trawl through freewargamesrules - Warmaster works for large battles, and I think hordes and heros is the same.

There is also "Warrior Heroes: Armies and Adventures" by Two Hour Games that provide a system for small skirmishes up to big battles and mechanisms that allow solo play.

Two-Hour Games also provide a downloadable free version of their rules (Chain Reacion v.3 Sword Play) which will give you a flavour of the way their rules work.

LoTR would work well for skirmish level games.

Man oh Man, I have tried most of all that have been mentioned and for quick games and loads of fun I keep going back to HoTT.   When I want to bring out the tons o'lead armies with masses of masses of figures, I use Warmaster Fantasy or Ancients either works for me.

Find out what is being played in your area and go with that.  :)
