Title: Spray Varnish
Post by: sebigboss79 on 15 May 2013, 09:19:20 PM
One of the neverending topics I guess.

Any recomendation on this except Dullcote?  :-\

I stock the Vallejo ones now, after a customer wanted some, but I haven't heard much feedback for/against them!   ;D

I had them at Glasgow actually, as I'm keeping them as a show product for now.  Shipping aerosols seems to have a few iffy areas, and they're a pain to package anyway!

I use Humbrol Acrylic matt varnish spray. It dries VERY matt

Worth a shot but Claymore is a long way to go  :-\

Anyone about ArmyPainter? I know the GW stuff is overpriced and NOT buyable on ethical reasons on my side  :D

The Army Painter is fine...and the only thing I buy from them  ;) 8)

I forgot to add, I have been using the Humbrol for about 2 years now and have never had any whiting or crackling problems that you get with some offers

I have a 17ml pot of matt varnish from Leon. I was gonna suggest him to get the larger 55 or even 500ml ones but for a current project I would prefer spray.

But you are right. Vallejo in pot is fantastic

I'll have a look at stocking them in the future, we go through loads of the 17ml varnishes, so having some of the bigger ones would be handy.

I'll be at Glasgow as well if you're at that show?

I use Botny, a Chinese brand. One box of 10 sprays of 200 gramms cost only 10 pounds, I am satisfied with it.

Years and years ago, I had a can of Humbrol that must have had so much of 'the medium' in it, when it was applied (fortunately to just a single figure) it looked as though said model was covered in 'scale frost'. :'( :'(

With spray varnishes I'm sure there will be the very, very odd 'rogue' can with whichever brand you use.

Cheers - Phil.

I can only comment on the "brush-on" varnishes, but I find the Vallejo varnish to be the most "matt" (if that's possible). Humbrol is slightly more "silk", but not exceptionally so.

As Phil says, appearance can vary from batch to batch.

Not that I am aware of the now. Still too early - wee one is at school so cannot do that many day trips :(

If not I will await the bigger bottles if you gonna stock those. But then again, buy one and never come back sort of. Always a trade off.

I Use Army Painter varnish (and their various Primers, which spray on really thick & look like plastic, but tighten up when they dry and work fine for me) and the new dropper washes. Occasionally I apply a bit of paint too...

Have tried Army Painter Anti Shine and this is the result  >:(
Followed the instructions literally and even slightly warmed the can. Weather is moderate, humidity is no issue.

Bought it as it was cheap but ended up ruining the ruin I bought from Nik ages ago.
Emailed the AP guys what their take is.

Tsk, what a mess, you should have spent the extra cash and bought some Testor's Dullcote. Well known to be able to remove the shine from Chrome plate.

I use the Army Paint anti-shine quite a lot and it has always worked for me.

This looks like a reaction between the AP A-S and the paint on the grey model - the humidity issue is typically more of a frosting of the spray.

The general help would suggest I oversprayed or went to close. Both I can rule out.

On a sidenote I used the same can again half an hour later without any issues. Was told particularly Army Painter has only "excellent" and "utter rubbish" cans. Did not know they can shift though  :-\

only ever used GW, 'purity seal' is what i think they call it nowadays', and have only had about two cans in i don't know how many years of gaming [well okay since '93].

don't know how good they compare to other brands - but they certainly have good shelf life.

i've seen this asked before on another forum, but does spray varnish have a used-by date?

- also, if using spray varnish, don't do what i did and have the nozzle aimed at your face [and eyes!] by mistake. it hurts. It Really Hurts! and it's the reason i now wear glasses [probably]

Used GW Purity Seal before. Was "ok". Currently my house rule forbids usage of any evil empire stuff.

Quite busy with new PC so no painting. My research shows ALL spray varnishes are hit or miss which makes my verdict to go for the cheapest stuff more financially sane.

Yep, looks like a reaction between the paint Nik used and the spray varnish. We occasionally get this at work when we have to fix models from other companies. Inevitably we have to strip the model back to the bare plastic, metal etc. A real pain in the butt when this happens.

No longer use spray. Now apply a mix of Vallejo gloss varnish, with a little Vallejo sepia wash mixed in, with a brush. When dry then brush apply Windsor and Newton matt acrylic varnish, leaving some areas gloss, eg. armour. Never ever had clouding/frosting with this method.

I too use brush on lacquer and have had no problems at all.

I bought it in mint condition from Nik and as stated the same paint did not react on other models.

I did not spray too much or too close the can I got is simply crap.

I mentioned that I prefer the Vallejo gloss spray in a previous thread ages ago but didn't realise you were now stocking them. No chance of sending them by post then?

I'm afraid not at the moment, our local Post Office said it's a no-go, so I'll have to check with some couriers and see if there's other options.

If you'll be at Colours in September though, I could pop one on the side for you?

I wish I could be at Colours but unfortunately (?) I'll be in the sun in Tenerife where it will probably be too warm to paint  ;)

Thanks anyway,
Andy

Apologies for that (not the sitting in the sun bit!), have you got any mates going along who we could pass an order to?

It seems that your local post office is correct. I've just checked and spray paints are a prohibited product according to the Royal Mail website (unless for medical use).

I have bought a different paint-type aerosol product from another well known online shop recently and had it sent to me in the post so they obviously don't know the rules  :o  You would think that the tell-tale rattling noise would give it away !

I will see if anyone from my local club is going to Colours.

Thanks Leon.

Cheers,
Andy

I'm not sure what the deal is to be honest.  The PO say it can't be sent, but there's any number of online sellers sending them out without any problems.  There are disclaimers on most websites that they can't be sent overseas, which is understandable.  I'll have to do some digging and see what can be done.  There must be a way of sending them, as 'aerosols' covers everything from deodorant to car sprays, and that's a lot of product sales to be limited in such a way.

Couriers must carry aerosols as I've had lots sent to me from many sources.

I've had spray cans through the post from several vendors. Not really sure how this rule can be enforced by the post office?

I think further investigation would be justified.

Army painter works for me BUT given the current weather, you need to avoid humidity.  Later in the evening on sultry days works well.

I'm specifically interested in gloss spray varnish. The matt stuff is available fairly easily in shops and at shows.

My order for aerosol varnish from another internet supplier arrived in the post with an exemption certificate marked "medical supplies" !

For gloss spray varnish (and matt black and white primers) I use Halfords own brand which I pick up in person - more branches of Halfords than there are wargames shops and they come in nice big cans.

I know here in N.I we cant get aerosols sent from the UK from webstores there, we have to wait for shops to get them in via the ferries  which shoots the price up sadly

We don't get down your way much unfortunately!  If you're going to Colours, I'll have the Vallejo spray varnishes at the show.
