Hi folks
currently building up my War of Spanish Succession and have tried out Maurice a few times - looks quite good. Any players on the South coast between Bournemouth to Portsmouth? I am also wondering what base widths are you using for this game?
Playing AWI, bases are 30mm x 30mm with 6 figures to a base, in Scotland unfortunately
Same really, 30x30, based in Suffolk.
Have you tried the Maurice Forum? Friendly bunch ;)

Greetings
25mm frontages - just need to paint a few more units for Seven Years War, Western Germany. Located in the south (west Surrey) just not on the coast, though our daughter is at uni in Southampton which is only 45-50 minutes away from home.
Regards
Edward
Thanks for the tips folks.
I've gone with 20x20 for Maurice (FIW in 10mm, SYW in 2mm)
Once again tried to get pictures on here but it is so convoluted I can nevder remember from one session to the next how to do it and I can't be writing a thousand words!
I went with 1" as the notational base width (for measuring etc) - but actually used 20mm x 20mm or 40mm x 20mm bases for the figures (as I already had lots of 40x20 based figures)
Two 40x20 bases works pretty well - as the bases are a good size to stay in place on the table. I have made 20x20 based figures but these tend to end up in slightly ragged lines as the stands get bumped a little.

Here are some french infantry on 20x20 (or possibly 25x20) bases facing some british cavalry on 40x20 bases.

Some French in columns - the only time 20x20 bases are better than 40x20
Um, do the rules not specify base sizes? And if not, does it matter? ???
I haven't looked at the rules in ages, but I think it says as long as the width is twice the depth it doesn't really matter...But I could be thinking of some other rules
Actually if you could ignore all that, I was thinking of M&R
The rules are written to use Base Widths (BW) to make them figure scale independent. The rules recommend "squareish" bases.
We went with 1 BW = 1" as it made translation of the rules really simple. Even though we left bases at 20mm, as that is what we had. I don't think this small difference in bases size to the designated BW had any major impact on game play. But I wouldn't want to try with too much of a difference in base size and the BW used by the rules.
With the LoA figures I am tempted to do 40x40mm bases - but not sure that I will get that many figures painted.
I don't get this! I've just attempted to post ONE photo and it won"t let me because the file is too large, yet above is a post with THREE photos. What's going on? Incidentally my son insists I'm a gibbon when on a computer.
There are two ways of getting photos on to the forums.
The best, but a bit more effort, is to have the photo hosted somewhere already online (eg a photo hosting site like Picassa, Photobucket etc, or on a website or blog). Then you just right click the image and choose Copy URL. Switch back to the forum and click the insert photo link button, the 3rd one from the left on the middle row. This puts a pair of img tags in the posting box, then just paste the URL form the clipboard (the cursor is in the right place).
The second option is to attach a photo - which is what I think you have tried to do. This only allows fairly small files to be attached, and shows them as a thumbnail, until someone clicks on them to view them. To get the file to the right size you will need some image editing software, iPhoto is great on the Mac, not sure if Photo and Fax viewer in Windows can doing cropping and resizing.
30x20mm for my guys either as 2 bases of 8 foot, 4 cav or 1 gun or now my collections is growing can go with the four bases stated in rules. NZ is where I live
Look at this years painting comp army, page 3 to have a look of what it was like then since doubled in size have some Prussians done and currently working on Marlburian French for a change (being thick I dunno how to paste the msg link here doh!)
Thanks Fred. I'll give the photobucket method a whirl.
My own preference for 10mm and Maurice is to use 25mm as the standard frontage. This means all measurements can be done in inches. I now (having tried other numbers) base infantry on 25mm x 25mm in two ranks each of four figures. I use the same bases for cavalry and light infantry with three cavalry and three randomly placed lights. Artillery have differing base depths owing to the size of model being used. To further spice things up I sometimes replace the fourth infantry base with one having two infantry figures in two ranks and a 3lb gun and two crew to give the impression of battalion guns. It counts the same as an infantry base.(//)
As you can see Fred that didn't work because I can't work out how to paste the URL from the clipboard because I don't know what the clipboard is[img][img]http://www.pendrakenforum.co.uk/Themes/babylon/images/bbc/img.gif
My son found it!
Or did he? Still can't see a picture. Will try again(http://[/img[URL=http://s1101.photobucket.com/user/dourpuritan/media/10mm%20SYW/IMG_0385.jpg.html][IMG]http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g440/dourpuritan/10mm%20SYW/IMG_0385.jpg)[/URL]

1.before posting, use the PREVIEW button to test your post. (then you can modify your post )
2. an image should begin with

You hosted your pic somewhere on the web, yes ?
About the "weight" of your picture, it must be a low resolution. Resize it if necessary. ( 600 pixels wide )
Yep, exactly what Ronan says. If you're still having trouble, you can always send me the pics and I can upload them on our Photobucket for you.

The size of the picture is usually fine, I think the Forum software will resize it sometimes, as long as it's not massive! I can always edit the post as well if necessary.

If anyone is still interested the photos are in my 10mm SYW album on photobucket. If the mountain won't come to Mohammed ...........
Are these your pics?

If so, this is the bit of code you need to put into the Forum, but without the spaces in the brackets:
[ img ]http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g440/dourpuritan/10mm%20SYW/IMG_0385-1_zps4ec7b122.jpg[ /img ]
To get that code, there's a few options. Basically you need the IMG code, which you should be able to get when you are logged in to your Photobucket account by hovering over the picture. Photobucket has changed a little recently, so you may need to change your settings to get the sharing options to be more accessible (job for son?!). Once you've got it activated, you can just copy and paste the bit of code in the IMG box.
The other method, and one which can be used to grab any image you see anywhere online, is to copy the image location. To do this, hover over the picture you want to use, and right click the mouse. You should have an option which says 'Copy Image Location'. Click this and then come back to the post screen on the Forum (where you type your message). Right click again, and click 'Paste' which will put the image/code address into your post. All you need now are some IMG brackets, so highlight your newly pasted address code, and then click the 'Image' button above all the smiley faces, it's the 3rd one from the left, above the grinning and laughing smiley faces. Clicking this button should put the [IMG ] brackets around your image address. Hit 'Post' and your picture should be displayed in all it's 10mm glory!
Give me a shout if that doesn't work.

No worries! We'll see you at Phalanx in a fortnight as well if you're still having trouble with it.
I'll take you up on that if you have time. There's no substitute for actually being shown. I'll be putting in a collectable order in the next few days. see you then.
Maurice looks interesting but I can't start another period at the moment. May give Longstreet the ACW version a whirl once it comes out though.

I was a bit disapointed with
Maurice Lite. :-\ ( I will try the real
Maurice ) I had the feeling of playing "the rules/the cards" more than "the battle".
I will try to use DSLB with minors changes. ( I LIKE these rules)

That's what I thought. But I failed to resist when I saw these lovely armies ;D
( I 'll also look at the ACW version.. but I already own 15mm armies. :-[ )
Using the cards is very much part of the game play. To be honest I'm not brilliant at it because it does mean you have to hold a lot of info in your head at any one time and use the cards wisely. This is easier said than done and a number of times I have missed golden opportunities because I've forgotten what is currently in my hand. However this system does force a player to make a plan to build an attack in a particular sector of the battlefield, which is more realistic than moving all one's units every turn. I have seen games won where a player has concentrated on a devastating infantry flank assault and as a consequence that player's cavalry hardly moved throughout the battle.

yes, I understand, but may be I missed something. We were moe thinking about the cards than the plan... I will try again, when I received my minis. Thank you !
( and I would say you can't expect to move every units in DSLB.. ;) )
Thanks !
We play Maurice on 1 inch square bases. The Pendraken 10mm figures look great with 6 infantry or 2 cavalry to a base and measuring base-widths is very easy with this frontage - any old tape measure will do. The full version of Maurice is an excellent game, my personal favourite at the moment.
As above except I've now moved to 8 infantry and 3 cavalry as it looks more dense. It also means measurement is in inches which makes life a lot more straightforward.
We've just started Maurice for the LOA and have gone with 30mm x 20mm bases. 6 infantry or 3 cavalry figures per base.
Which of course means you now have to produce measuring sticks of the appropriate frontage.
I base on 20mm squares (4 infantry, 2 cavalry) with artillery one gun on a 40mm square
For Maurice I use two inf/cav squares per 'base' so the BW is 40mm

Why? 3 BW = 9cm, 4 BW = 12cm. It's pretty basic math so I think a normal tape measure will suffice.
Maths was never my strongpoint so fannying around doing divisions or multiplications when all I want to do is move my troops means measuring sticks. Once you start putting maths in the mix the fun goes right out of the window, unless you're Brian Cox I suppose.
