A few of us have started working on ACW forces for Sam Mustafa's forthcoming Longstreet game. Although, I plan to also use them for other systems as well. This is a new scale and period for me but so far I have been enjoying painting these figs. I'm not the greatest painter but I'm slowly getting better. Pendraken have had a few orders from me though and likely will have more.
I started with a sample base- to see how things went and I think that was ok - you can see a sample below:
I have more pictures and comments on my blog here: https://mellis1644.wordpress.com/2013/02/25/acw-10mm-confederate-infantry-test-base/ (https://mellis1644.wordpress.com/2013/02/25/acw-10mm-confederate-infantry-test-base/)
This last weekend I passed the 30 base level - so 3 decent units and added another blog entry on those here: http://mellis1644.wordpress.com/2013/03/24/first-confederate-units/ (http://mellis1644.wordpress.com/2013/03/24/first-confederate-units/). Again there are more pictures and comments on my blog. However, so far these seem to be coming out nicely and are not too difficult to paint. Below is sample picture of my first 3 units:
I'll do some more grey units but I'm also planning some more butternut/yellow coloured ones as well eventually.
Loving the ragged reb look, I had something similar in 6mm albeit with a slightly more uniform look.
You can't beat rebs en-masse when you're going for the epic charge.
Good stuff
Cheers
Looking good! 8)
Nicely done 8)
Rather superb - if doomed - charge!
Love the massed ragged look, too. 8)
Would love to create that look with Napoleonic skirmishers -- hint, hint, Pendraken. ;)
Looking good!
Very nice indeed ! 8)
Cheers - Phil
Lovely!!
Nicely done and troops look suitable ragged and aggressive
Excellent first post! As everyone else has said, very nice work 8)
Cheers,
Kev
Love the look! A tribute to figure sculptor and painter both. Look forward to watching your progress on Longstreet!
Mollinary
the massed ragged look is good, they have come out really well..
keep up the good work.
Very nice work, look forward to seeing more,
kev
Agreed with the others on the massed, ragged look to the lines 8). Keep up the good work!
I have completed some more units so now have enough for a basic Longstreet force. I added another unit of foot, a cavalry (mounted and dismounted) with some art & commanders.
You can see a lot more details photo's on the blog entry: http://mellis1644.wordpress.com/2013/04/06/basic-longstreet-force-completed/ (http://mellis1644.wordpress.com/2013/04/06/basic-longstreet-force-completed/)
Looks great!!!
Look great there.
Good stuff Mellis, nice to see the olive green gun carriages, many a time have I seen that bit painted wrong, a little research goes a long way. :-bd
All in all an exciting project, looking forward to seeing the opposition.
Ry
Really well done! This little army shows off how much more life and animation have come into 10 mm figures in the last few years. I have some 10mm figures which are about 12 years old now, and boy do they show their age. :( :(. If Longstreet turns out to be as exciting as Maurice, I may have another project for my retirement. :'(
Mollinary
Very nice, brings back memories, the first metal figs i painted were reb cav,
kev

Like them a lot, Mellis. I'm a great fan of the square base too - the most flexible format I've found to date. :-bd
Looking good
Excellent !!
Cheers - Phil.
Hi
Very nice indeed.
Take care
Andy
I have done a few more units for this project:
You can see more more photo's on my blog, included extra guns and a hero base here: http://mellis1644.wordpress.com/2013/05/28/more-confederate-forces/ (http://mellis1644.wordpress.com/2013/05/28/more-confederate-forces/)
Next up are the Union forces.
Excellent again M. :-bd
Cheers - Phil
Really eye catching, great work sir! 8)
Very nice work mellis,
kev
Really very nice feel to these units Mellis 8).
Good work
You're so right - 10mm are very straightforward to paint and look great en masse.
I finally got started my Federal troops now - getting ready for the release of the Longstreet rules. You can see more pictures here: http://mellis1644.wordpress.com/2013/08/12/federal-forces-finally-off-the-painting-table/ (http://mellis1644.wordpress.com/2013/08/12/federal-forces-finally-off-the-painting-table/) but here is one picture of them:

Very nice indeed sir. 8)
Excellent looking regiments, I will be interested to hear how you get on with Longstreet, I am very tempted.
Mollinary
There's something about a mass of well-painted figures. Very, very nice. :-bd
Nicely done 8)
Those look terrific ! :-bd
Cheers - Phil.
Thanks for the nice comments.
Well just to close this out. Longstreet is now available for purchase - as of yesterday and here is a picture of my starter Federal army. So I have both sides done for when the rules get to me.
I'm working on more units of course and more details pictures can be seen here: http://mellis1644.wordpress.com/2013/08/20/federal-force-recruited-just-in-time/ (http://mellis1644.wordpress.com/2013/08/20/federal-force-recruited-just-in-time/)
Nicely done 8)
Wow !!
You have been busy.
Very nice page on the link !
Cheers - Phil.
Very very good. 8)
Great work, i can see a big battle coming,
kev
More federals are off the painting table and ready for a flight. Unfortunately, it will be a few more weeks before that happens, but that's time enough to get even more painting done. You can see the latest batch here: http://mellis1644.wordpress.com/2013/09/07/more-federal-troops-ready/ but below is an example photo:

Nice work...played Johnny Reb for ages in 10mm...wish I hadn't sold it all now

Nice work...played Johnny Reb for ages in 10mm...wish I hadn't sold it all now
Thanks. I always wanted to try ACW but had no local opponents, or core motivation to paint both sides and Longstreet has changed that. I do have Johnny Reb and other rules and those are the reason I'm painting way more figs than are needed for Longstreet- as I want to try those rules.
I played JRII and JRIII for years, but the drawback was the variable sized bases and the order chits. They did give a really detailed game, especially JRII, but they never caught on in my club, which is very much a F&F club. However Regimental F&F and Longstreet have won a number of converts which is why my ACW stuff is up and running again.
The problem with JBII was needing a degree to figure out the charge and close combat procedure, we moved onto F&F quite quickly after that the regimental version is good as well though I have only played it a couple of times
The painting continues. Another 37 bases of Federals are off the painting table - and below are colored troops for the late war battles. You can see more here:
http://mellis1644.wordpress.com/2013/09/24/federal-colored-troops-ready-for-the-table/ (http://mellis1644.wordpress.com/2013/09/24/federal-colored-troops-ready-for-the-table/)
One day I'm going to get to play the game with these...

Great painting!
Glory, one of the best war movies ever!
Great look and feel to these 8).
Looking really fine, that man !!
Cheers - Phil.
With that many troops you could already be playing Longstreet.
Thanks for the comments

I agree and it's likely I will be providing troops for multiple people in the club to play games - many others have the lead but have not put a brush to it yet. My issue is time to play games at present not lack of figures. I can escape for 30mins or so to paint but not the few hours to play a game.
It is the one massive consolation of no longer having to go to work (i.e. getting old). I can now paint and play almost any time I want. Unfortunately I only have one opponent who is also retired, hence today's Longstreet has been cancelled by a mate who is still working various shifts.
Yes, that is one of the drawbacks to retirement - but rejoice in the knowledge that it will certainly change - eventually. :D
If the bugger doesn't work himself to death first! ;D ;D ;D
My painting continues - with another 30 bases of reb's...
I blame Longstreet for getting me into the aspect of painting ACW figs, but I am enjoying the painting. I now have way more troops than I need and I'm planning on keeping going for a while longer - I hope to have enough to play fire and fury in the end which is quite a lot more figs still. :)

I do have a Longstreet game planned for next week. :)
Very cool 8)
your figures are looking very good. Here's a couple of 15mm shots of my last game of Longstreet. You may well recognise the scenario.

The guys in blue on the right you mean?

I always love a Confederate victory :D
Cheers,

Yes folks, the Union was snotted in Confederate move 6 - should never have left that railway embankment.
Yeeeehaaaaaw! :D
I slowly keep on rolling on this project. I just finished a couple of Zouaves regiments.

Excellent.

Really impressive! 8)
Very nice. Doesn't matter how slowly you paint, there are no prizes for speed, so long as you keep painting. :-bd

Quoted for thruth!
It doesn't matter how you get there, as long as you get there!
Great looking zouave units.
This summer I participated in the 150th Anniversary Reenactment, 2nd Maryland. They would have matched well on the battlefield. Some units had more grey like this one, especially those from NC and Georgia. I agree more butternut/yellow coloured ones or intermixed would be more authentic and colorful, especially with the raggerd look. However, uniformity when done well as here gives more mass in appearance, which is very welcome in the 10mm scale. Kudoes to the artists!

My rebel forces are now complete - a picture of them all in the storage containers as well in this entry.
http://mellis1644.wordpress.com/2014/07/04/last-of-my-acw-rebels/
So that's – 192 bases of infantry, 22 of dismounted cavalry, 18 mounted cavalry, 19 artillery, 8 artillery limbers 8 hero's, 2 sharpshooters, and 3 command bases.
You can see all the posts here: http://mellis1644.wordpress.com/category/10mm/
Very impressive! 8)
Wow, that is impressive.
You chaps are reminding me of the time I worked as a stripper!
Paint stripper? Good, I have 80 limber horses in need of your attention.
Special rates for cross-species parties.
I have now finished all the Union forces as well. So that's a 1 and a couple of months to do approx 400 bases of ACW stuff. :)
You can see them all here: http://mellis1644.wordpress.com/2014/08/02/vacation-painting-completion-of-my-10mm-acw-forces/ (http://mellis1644.wordpress.com/2014/08/02/vacation-painting-completion-of-my-10mm-acw-forces/).
I'm already starting to eye up the WW1 stuff though for a possible project.

Like 'em ! 8)
Cheers - Phil
Very nice. There's a lot of satisfaction in finally getting something done. But beware the "a few more troops would make up the numbers" syndrome. ;)
Well done that man. should look great on the tabletop.
Nice work!
Brilliant. =D>
Loving the game photo's.
