Title: Zulu regimental shield guide
Post by: ryman1 on 23 March 2013, 07:06:41 PM
Hi,

I've just put this guide together for anyone who wants to get a zulu army painted up but doesn't know where to start.
It's not complete but it highlights the main designs, ages and strength of the regiments.

cheers

Amazing stuff, Ry!

Where did you source it?  Not really my period, but one of the reasons I'd always given myself for not doing this war has just been destroyed!

Well done.

Hi Molinary,

It's research accumulated over a few years, when not painting I'm studying the war, I'll do a uniform/regalia guide soon and have that up too.

Cheers

Excellent Ry.
What a damn fine resource.
Something else I've learned.
Didn't have an inkling that there were different patterns for different regiments .
Cheers - Phil.

Fabulous idea, Ry.
I've done my own research on the shields of the Zulu amabutho in 1879 and there's a lot of text and illustrations to sift through to make up a table like yours.  You've done a huge amount of work.  I know because I also have prepared a similar shield guide for use with the rule set I'm working on.  Would you mind if I posted it?

The Osprey book has a guide too, and there are others. Of course, they're not all in agreement about uniforms, or even about the existence of some regiments.

Hi FierceKitty.
I know what you mean about the sources.  I have just about every Osprey published on the topic.  It's not that they don't agree about the regiments per se but rather that frequently regiments (amabutho) of the same age group from across the nation were incorporated into the largest and became sections of that ibutho.  Then in battle reports they would be mentioned separately, often because the sections were in a different region.  It gets confusing.  Also, as the regiments got larger it became more difficult for the king to provide enough of the designated pattern even though huge herds of cattle were bred for that purpose.  This resulted in a variety of patterns within the same regiment (ibutho).

There I go spouting off again!

Cheers,
Rob :D
