Title: Bow v longbow v crossbow
Post by: TinyTerrain on 19 March 2013, 10:31:04 PM
Hi,

I ve been fiddling with Dux Bellorum to try and create a medieval variant but my knowledge of Medieval weaponry is letting me down.

In laymans terms, if a "normal" bow has a range of 4, should a longbow and a crossbow both have a range of 5, and if a "normal" bow hits on a 5+ should a long bow and cross bow hit on a 4+?

I know that crossbow were significantly slower to load than bows, but was there an advantage that a crossbow could be carried loaded or fired on the move?

Any pointers you can give would be most appreciated.

Cheers

Craig

Ahh, its an old and irreconcilable debate!

For my Wars of the Roses Dux Bellorum game i went with the following stats.

Longbow   Range 4   Target protection 5 (4 ≤1BW)

Bow           Range 4   Target protection 5

Crossbow   Range 4   Target protection 5 (4 ≤1BW)

Thanks Ludd.

Any chance of seeing a copy of your w.o.r conversion for Dux B please?

Cheers, Craig

Hehe...aye, i posted a few examples and some thinking around our conversion there.

I'll see what i can sort out for you Craig.  I'll try and get something up on my blog perhaps, but if not i'll dig out the file and get it across to you.

I'd heard a rumour that Dan is writing a Medieval version himself...but, well, you know what rumours are like!

While we've played a lot more Dux Bellorum, we still haven't got our WotR armies into the field yet (due to other projects, and sporadic painting) so my rules remain untested.   :-[

OK Craig,

I've posted my rules on my blog  http://luddite1811.blogspot.co.uk/2013/03/dux-bellorum-wars-of-roses-unofficial.html (http://luddite1811.blogspot.co.uk/2013/03/dux-bellorum-wars-of-roses-unofficial.html)

If you use them let me know how they work out.

Thanks for posting these Luddite. From a cursory glance they look good and a nice excuse to get some of the lovely Pendraken medieval range figures :D.

Indeed, 10mm will look so much better than the 28mm stuff my group has already invested in to do this.   :(

Based like this (http://luddite1811.blogspot.co.uk/2013/03/something-little-bit-orc.html (http://luddite1811.blogspot.co.uk/2013/03/something-little-bit-orc.html)) i reckon they'd look expectionally good!

:D
