Title: Gday from Australia
Post by: Turk1964 on 11 March 2013, 11:10:29 PM
Gday all
Im a keen painter and wargamer from Victor Harbor South Australia and have been painting now for about 5 years. Mainly 28mm and this is my first adventure into 10mm grand scale. Will be using Impetus basic but also have FOG rules which i havent played and would be keen to know what rules you all use and whats the best set. Ancients is my thing so will be starting first with a Carthaginian army with Roman Republican to follow.

                                        Cheers Turk

G'day to you too, and a very warm welcome Turk.
From a freezing cold Pembrokeshire Wales. (Could there be a theme today?  ;))
Cheers - Phil

We hate you already Turk !!   ;) ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
In truth, although it would be nice to have a bit of warmth...38 degrees is probably too hot even for me.
We'll be really lucky to see 38 degrees F today.

Cheers again - Phil.

G'day, Turk from just north of London - probably the only part of the south that isn't under snow. The sun's out, but that don't mean a thing!

Anyway, welcome to the forum. It's warm in here.  :-bd

Hello!

From snow covered Belgium  :'(

And to think we had the sun last week, heck we even had dinner in the garden in our Tee's!

Well the only consolation we have is that there were no Koala's to steal our lunch...

Welcome   ;)

Well actually it's that little 4 year old that's running about. He doesn't like anything you cook or buy him, unless it's on your plate  =)

Welcome Turk.  Hope you enjoy the Forum.

Regarding Ancient Rules, I posted a similar request when I joined last week  -   on the Forum under "Ancient Rules",.

Had loads of help and suggestions so you might want to start there.

Best Wishes     DaveL

Hi 2Australia.

Further to my last reply, I've been experimenting with Neil Thomas' "Ancient and Medieval Wargaming".  Needs some tweaking but overall not a bad game.  Tried it at home a couple of times and at my club.  Seems to have aroused some interest.

I like them because they're only about 5 pages long and I CAN ACTUALLY FOLLOW THEM AND UNDERSTAND THEM!!!!!  Which for me is unusual!

He goes through each period (Biblical, Classical, Imperial and medieval) with the basic rules, adaptions for each period, a background to the period and an example game using the rules.  There's also a suggested army for each nationality.  Some people may be put off by this as he advocates using just EIGHT elements per side per game from a suggestion list of about 12 - although I've used them successfully with about 14 units a side - with twice as many still to come when I've finished painting them!

There's also a forum - think it's on Yahoo - dedicated to these rules with updates and suggestions and, in my view, improvements to the rules.

Overall, a simple, quite bloody, fairly quick and quite enjoyable game.  Hope that'll be useful in your search

Beat Wishes        DaveL
