Title: I'm completely confused by plugins !!
Post by: Techno on 03 February 2013, 04:49:50 PM
Help guys.

Someone explain something to computer illiterate......PLEASE.

A lot of the new film clips are coming up with a grey screen.....Telling me that "You may be vulnerable....Please check for updates".
So far, so good.....I understand this.....Sort of."

When I check for updates....Firefox tells me that...

It's disabled my version of JAVA.....I've no idea what this is...But we can leave that for now.

And I have outdated versions of.....
Shockwave Flash.
Real Player Plugin 60.12 1675.
Quick Time plugin  6.5.1.
Adobe Acrobat 7-00 for Netscape.

Now, I'll swear I've downloaded Adobe acrobat.....But Firefox tells me I still have an outdated version.
So I'm completely confused.....
My Adobe reader on the desktop tells me I have got version 7.0.....So...is this something completely different ?
Shockwave Flash tells me I might have to disable Norton...So I was loathe to do that, but I did download it (apparently) without Norton being disabled !
BUT.....On the desk top .....My flash player icon is now telling me I have a duplicate version of an the old one.

Wos' goin' on ?

Now....Some of the grey video screens still come up with the same message.....but with a line through "you may be vulnerable".....Like that.
I'm completely lost.

Cheers - Mr Numpty.

Hi Techno, Adobe is now on version XI (they've gone all roman on us).

Try this link:

http://get.adobe.com/reader/ (http://get.adobe.com/reader/)

It should take you to the Adobe update page. Click the update button and it'll guide you through the next steps, any problems PM me.

Also select the Extra menu of Firefox, then click Add-ons. It should tell you which plugins you currently have. And there should be a link at the top, click this and you go to a page where you can see which ones need updating.

I share your confusion Techno.

My 'Shockwave Flash' regularly stops working at random for some reason.

Errrrrr.....
Well, I seem to have stopped the grey video screens showing with warnings on them now.....

I'm certain I've got Adobe XI....(Yes I have....I just looked.)
I think I've updated the Real Player.....(Strike a light....That took for bl**dy ever).....Though it was wittering on right at the end telling me there were 2 seconds of downloads still to do....and not letting me log into it.......Perhaps that's the bit you pay for as the 'Premium service ?'

Thought I'd installed the updated Flash Player.....It said it had installed it...But the desktop icon still says "Install Flash".

Google Chrome also installed (So do I uninstall Firefox now ?)

Just about to let Mrs Techno visit one of her horsey sites where she was having problems with Flash player.

I thought computers were supposed to make life easier ! ;) ;D ;D ;D

Thanks for all your help. Cheers - Phil.

You can use VLC to play all your videos.
For flash, just type "update flash" on google, and here you go.

Thanks again guys.

The site on Facebook that Mrs Techno visits, is now letting her watch the horsey clips she enjoys.

I'll do a little more checking this evening...to find out 'what's what' as regards whats on my PC and if it truly IS up to date.
All seems to be 'working' properly...Though I'm definitely NOT convinced that I did everything correctly.
Goodness knows how much I've got in the way of spurious, extra 'stuff' (technical term there....as far as I'm concerned) on the hard drive now.

At some stage I think I'll pay for a home visit by some computer 'whizz' to give my hard drive a damn good clean out.
Part of me wishes I understood computers better....The other part is scared almost witless of the damn thing ! ;) ;D ;D ;D

Cheers - Phil.

Hmmm....That sounds as though it would be particularly useful.
You'd give it the 'thumbs up' F ?
This steam powered PC that I use, must be 6 or 7 years old now.
