Title: Game of Thrones (10mm)
Post by: Vulpine on 16 January 2013, 04:51:46 PM

I was just thinking how good it would be to do a Game of thrones wargame. Some of you may know it more as ASong of Ice and Fire by George R. R. Martin. Either way I think it would be a nice setting for a wargame.

You could do a House Stark army, lead by Robert stalk going to fight House Lannister .
Alternatively House Lannister, with Tywin at the Helm and Jaime as a hero and allied Tribesmen lead by Tyrion
You could so house Targaryen with its Dothraki warband and possibly dragons!

Or you could do an earlier time period;
Robert (House Baratheon) and Eddard (House Stalk) Vr the Mad King (Targaryen)

Models wise, medieval and such should do nicely.

What's your ideas?

Its a fairly typical pseudo medieval fantasy world - so lots of medieval figures will do, dipping down to the Dark Ages for the Starks and Ironborn. While there is talk that it is WoTR based, this certainly isn't from a military technology perspective - or anything much else IMO.

The wildlings and monster north of the wall are quite interesting.

Dothraki - mongols or huns? But more sword than bow armed.

While I enjoyed the books - I can't really get enthusiastic about gaming it - perhaps because the battles (in Westeros at least) seem fairly peripheral to the story. The ones around the wall, and Daenarys war of conquest / liberation are in more detail.

I just like the way each house is very similar to historical forces but usually of different times. Armies that in historical would beaver meet. Plus white walking Zombi-ish people, dragons and such.

I think Fred's WoTR memory was someones comment on the books "The War of the roses as written by the Marquis de Sade" but with added bonking.

Need a lot of nude female figures. You folk are forgetting the main raison d'etre of the show.

(That's French, by the way. Those of you who have been trolling Barbarian may need a reminder how you just can't say some things in that primitive island patois.)

Compared to Spartacus GOT is rather tame. My Mam watched it and she never gave negative feedback about the rude behaviour.

But then again its only up to book 2 (of 5), gets a bit more near the knuckle later.

Spot on! Imight get her up the stairs  :-\.

Sparticus was to jumpy for that, as soon as a naughty bit was on it would jump to a image of gladiators smashing each others face in. My body became confused and didn't know if I should be getting ready to taker her to bed or ready to kick her in the jaw!

I seriously looked into doing this myself, but upon closer inspection, I found the task would have been quite daunting... lack of females characters in 10mm, the sheer number of outfits, colours, banners, costumes, etc (which face it, if you wish to stay true to the books, is essential; otherwise you`re simply not playing Game of Thrones, but some form of facsimile), all in all I ran as fast as I could from this idea once I realise just how much work would be needed to bring this theme to life. GREAT idea, on paper and in thought, but possibly a little unwieldy in practice. But my hat would go off to anyone who can do the story proper justice.

So guys

What models to use for :
• House Baratheon
• House Lannister
• House Stalk
• Hills tribe
• Dothraki warriors

For Lannister I was thinking: http://www.pendraken.co.uk/Renaissance-c12/Samurai-sc41/

A good link for pics of uniforms is this:

I did a whole range of DrWho models, this will be easy in contrast! But I see what your saying, but...

I'm thinking of Hord of the Things. We're a regiment of 1000s of men is represented by a base of 4-8 models so it shouldn't be too hard.

Character wise, that's going to be the hardest part, but I don't think it will be too difficult.

It's going to be a random assortment of the Norman, Anglo Saxon, Arab, Medieval and Late Roman ranges for the majority of it, apart from the Dothraki.  The only thing I could think of for them would be the Barbarians, which wouldn't be perfect.

I think it's easy done. The production have obviously based each house on historical armies so it should be fine.

How about models to represent some characters?
Should be too hard, just a bit of converting.

Daenerys Targaryen, she will have to be done as she was at the end of season 1

Have a look at http://www.darkswordminiatures.com/mainwebsite_html/store2GRRM.htm

Lannister : Renaissance.
Stark : Medieval.
For the others...I don't know.

I think I'll go Stalk and use Norse and mebs a few Saxons. I may need to add fur to the shoulders but that's easy done.

I am thinking of doing GOT in 6mm, (sorry Pendraken) purely because I have a box full of Baccus WOTR, I am doing WOTR in 10mm Pendraken (there you go I redeem myself).

WOTR figures would mainly be for the Lannisters, early medieval for Stark....

Any thoughts.

Well I'm not against 6mm but I want some detail.

Really I want enough detail so that charictors stand out as the model they are suppose to be (Sean bean, naked lass with dragons etc) so 28/25/15/10mm are all cool, but I want mass army's, so it's 10 or 15. 15 doesn't have the range of models, 10 is the one!

I'm thinking Norse and Saxon for my Starks.

Lannister, possibly Samurai?

I'm using Hords of the things rules, worked it out, for two armies (to start with) I'm looking at, £40.00
