Title: Never thought I'd see the day...
Post by: nikharwood on 03 January 2013, 12:04:17 AM
...when I didn't paint something 'properly'!

But, in the interests of research, sanity and the-knocking-at-least-some-strata-off-the-lead-mountain, I thought I'd have a bash at this 'dip' malarkey: on some 10mm skirmishing figures for STALKER / FALLOUT type games - these were all built from the spares box yonks ago & have been sat here waiting for some love & attention for too long...

So - some very simple (and reasonably tidy) block painting:

Then - brushed-on application of wilko 5 year woodstain satin rustic oak (about £4 for 250ml...I think I might have used about 2ml on these!):

Start-to-finish: about 45 minutes....just need some matt varnish in the morning & these will be on-table. Fast & dirty  :d

I can see some of my lingering projects getting a bit of a nudge-on with this technique...it's not great (and it makes me feel like I'm cheating...) but it gets 'em painted superquick.

Looks ok to me:)

Tobe honest, it gives about the same effect as devlan mud (but with more shine), and looks ok. I have doubted for a long time if i would use the tin of stain i once brought home in the wrong color when iwas renovating the house, but never did out of fear i'd ruin a perfectly good model  ;D

Good stuff Nik and the price of that "shader" is unbeatable!

Difficult to tell from the size of the photos, Nik. But if you're satisfied with them they're probably OK. I'd always thought the shader works best on larger figures.  :-\

Yeah - they'll do...considering that these have been undercoated since about June, I'm happy that I can get 'em on the table now, having spent next to no time (cheered me up a bit last night too Ray after that stupid result v QPR  :o)

I find Devlan Mud works well for 10mm, although I do thin it about 50% with water for some base colours. On beige and browns it works a real treat 'neat'.

Yeah, they'll do fine, Nik. (And how can the boys go away and whack a decent team like Everton and then lose to the worst team in the league? Must be the Redknapp effect.)  :'(

I dunno...I really don't like 'andshake 'arry so I'm not inclined to subscribe to this adoration that he gets. The thing that always gets me -and this is what Rafa is renowned for - is the rotation-for-rotation's sake; so he takes the four most consistent players from the last three games and doesn't start them, leaves them on the bench and might use them if he needs to...why, oh why, not just keep them in the starting 11 - get 'em to put 3 goals past the (so, so poor) opposition and then take them off for a rest.

As my 6 yr-old said to me, "Why aren't our best players playing, Daddy?"

Out of the mouths of babes...

Right - time to stop hijacking my own thread  ;)

Hi Nik
I think they look brilliant.  I have been using Ronseal wood stain varnish on just about everything I paint as I much prefer the campaign look, all dirty and grubby. As opposed to the parade look.

Take care

Andy

They look decent Nik. Im with you SteveJ- I always use Devlan Mud (slightly thinned) on my 10mm figures.
