Hey gents!
I am looking at what i can do with my new year's funds, and i want to do some ACW.
I was thinking of putting 6 man on a base, and wanted to know if you could comfortably fit 6 acw troops on a 25x20 base, or 3 cavalery. IF not could you fit them on a 25x25 base?
FOr artillery i'll probably have to take bigger bases i guess.
If anyone has some loose minis lying about, could you try it out for me please? Thanks!!
Not certain about ACW but for Napoleonics (which I think has the same designer) I can fit six infantry in two rows on a 20 X 15 base, which gives a nice dense look. 25 x 25 or 25 x 20 should therefore be quite doable.
Thanks!
I'll probably go for 25x25 then, as the advancing infantry might require a little more room, and i want to make basing between the rows a little easier :P
How about artillery, what kind of base size fits best for them? I'm aiming at a smaller base size for one gun + crew to go with the smaller infantry bases,
FWIW I got two ranks of 7 (so 14 total) ACW figures (new range) onto 40x20mm bases - they're pretty dense :)
Sooo 25x20 should do it? Is the footprint as big as say...a british riflman from BR1, i have those here so could try em out :p
I think you'll easily get 6 (2 ranks of 3) onto 25mm base - with 20mm being easily deep enough for 2 ranks; the cavalry might be a squeeze for 3 though - I think you're more likely to get 2 (on the basis that I can get 5 onto a 50x25/30 base or 4 onto a 40x25/20 base)
If i take 30x25 for the cavalry i should be ok then, i don't mind putting them on a larger base as they should look a bit more dynamic after all. The command stands will be two horses or a horse and a trooper or 2 so they should be fine on a 25x20 base.
Now this leaves me with artillery: 40x40? with real artillery spaced out more when deployed, i reckon their foot print should be somewhat larger .(also keeping in the back of my head that i will just use a token to show if the artillery piece is limbered or not, so the enlarged footprint represents the battery and their limbers)
I am basing these for severed union, haven't tried it out yet, but it's a pure maths exercise as i am counting the numbers of models that i will need for both armies)).
40x40 will be plenty of room for your guns (mine are on 40x20mm) :)
If you want to see my lot (mix of Old Glory + Pendraken) in-action (using ACWarmaster) have a look here:

Very nice!
Well the idea behind the 40x40 bases was that i can also use the leftovers for BKC guns and hq's :p
But maybe i can just stick 2 of the 20x40 bases togheter then if i need them :-\ I'll think i'll keep the larger footprint though, seems more logical.
THe idea i have is a bataillion would consist out of 5 stands. Making six battailions for each side, thus allowing me to use all of the sculpts from the new range (2 advancing,2marching and 2 firing battailions each)
Now only thing to figure out is skirmishers. Do i use regular figures 3 to a 25x20 base or do i use dismounted cavalry as skirmishers? I have no idea what would look best/more accurate.
In total i would be looking at about 210-220 infantry in 6 brigades ,3 battery's and 30 cavalry in 2 regiments per side. That will be enough for the small actions of the era i guess :) (as a starter )
Hi Peter
Some guys at my club PAW are going to do ACW and we are looking at basing 8figs (4x2) on 30x30mm bases for infantry and 3figs for cavalry.
Units will be based around 3 bases for a standard unit, in BP rule's terms. This give a flexibility to alter the number of the bases in a unit depending on the historical strength of the unit.
If you look at 'btsherman's' posts you can see how this basing looks
Enjoy and look forward to seeing your figures
Peter, You can see 10mm on 25mm and 20mm bases here:

Napoleonics but same sculptor.
Cheers, Michael
Thx!
Have already settled on 40X20 bases though, having 8 men/ 3 cavalry /1 gun On a base. Makes them a little less cramped and gives them the mob feel.
Bit concerned about Nik's ACW guys being "a bit dense". For someone involved in adult education that's not a good advert!

;D
Don't worry - the leadership's in good hands ;)
:D ;D ;D ;D
I use 1" (25mm) square bases for ACW and fit 4-5 on to form a raged line, like my Zouaves here:
