Title: Fred's 2013 Painting Diary
Post by: fred. on 01 January 2013, 09:35:26 PM
Happy New Year to All!

As last year's painting diary was successful http://www.pendrakenforum.co.uk/index.php/topic,4379.0.html with 183 posts and nearly 8000 views, I thought a new thread for this year would good.

The cliff hanger ending from last year, was to flock or not flock the ramparts of the Roman Fort? How could you sleep waiting for the answer? Well I've been at the in-laws today so no painting progress, but I think I will go with Phil's suggest of a bit of flock. Which has the advantage, that if it doesn't look good a bit more can easily be added!

One of my aims this year is to be more consistent in maintaining this diary - as last year there was a bunch of painting that only got recorded post fact. Its easy to take a couple of quick photos and upload them, so I will aim to do this.

Painting wise, I'm not sure what my main target should be, the likely contenders are:

Short term, the Roman Fort, a few artillery units and treents for KoW are in progress.

If it's a marching fort, Fred, then it would be recently thrown up with fresh earth. If it's a legionary base then it would have stone walls and be well established i.e. grassed over.

Just a thought.  :-\

Roman Fort

Flocked the lower parts of the ramparts - went for just a touch on the outer walls, and a bit more (around 1cm) on the inside. I'm thinking of this as a fairly new fort, that the ramparts are being maintained. Bit of light dry brushing done as well.

Even with Romans in the photo!

I think this half of the fort is pretty much done, just needs a spray of dullcote, and some felt sticking to the bottom to stop it sliding.

Bit of block painting of some Dwarf and Empire gunners - mainly to get 6 units painted for the least effort!

Game of Kings of War tomorrow night - what started out as just 2 players, has now expanded to 5 players and a third more points!

Asked Steve Oats about flocking the fort ramparts last night - aswnser is yes and no. The fort is a marching fort but semi-permanent. The earth rampart would ahve had tufr cover to stabalise it, which over time would die, and the reseed, so a basic green cover with tufts.

Fred - Steve probably wouldn't answer, he never checks SPAM. He also rarely updates his web site - so there are 10mm Carolinians on there no one knows about (Leon is now going to bar me.)

Ian, yes the Baggage Train website could do with some updating, I only got the Roman Fort after seeing it at a show, as I couldn't really picture what it would be like from the website, and its a fair price for enough pieces to make a fort.

Friday Game
Played a 2 player, 4k a side game of KoW in 10mm. Playing distances as written in the rules, but with Warmaster sized units (which is about half the 28mm frontage) the game plays really well, even though the rules are very simple. 2 of the players were only on their second game, and 1 on his first, and we finished within 3 hours, with the Elves destroying the Mordor hordes.

Painting
Inspired by KoW I have been adding various bits to my forces - mainly big shooty bits as can be seen from the photo
(https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-FYmz0wgjgGo/UOn61BZYJ1I/AAAAAAAABnc/hiiH32mfd9I/s1024/IMG_0044.jpg)

Lots of Kallistra and GW stuff (sorry!) but a few bits of Pendraken, the blue headed things on artillery carriages are scratch built Dragons Head war engines, using Pendraken artillery carriages (and there are a couple of PD elves just behind them. The catapults and trebuchets are Kallistra. The really big treemen are Kallistra - these are huge about 5cm tall. Then there are Empire and Dwarf cannons at the front. The romans on the right are Pendraken to give an idea of the size of some of the tree creatures.

Terrific stuff as usual Fred. 8)
It'll probably sound a daft thing to say, but I just 'lurve' the shade of blue you've used.
What would be a good word to describe it ?.....Vibrant ? :-bd

Those Romans must be nervous. They weren't too happy about fighting in forests, following their experience in Germany, so mobile and militarised trees would be very unsettling.
Do any commercial rules systems still refer to "morale tests"?
Title: Re: Fred's 2013 Painting Diary
Post by: fred. on 07 January 2013, 05:38:38 PM
The trees may be the least of the Roman's worries.

I'm not sure that I've seen Morale Tests in those terms recently. But something similar exists in Hail Caesar and Kings of War (Break and ?Nerve tests respectively)

Phil, the blue is Vallejo Magic Blue from their Game Colour range - its pretty vibrant normally, and yesterday it was rather thin, so came out particularly shiney and bright (they aren't finished yet).

If you drink blue paint, do you get blue wee? My smallest daughter was much more interested in eating beetroot when she thought she might get pink wee - but was never able to eat enough of the small strips in packs of salad to get to there...

Anyway.

Guns
Finished off six stands of artillery (all GW I'm afraid). And a couple of Elfy bits. (apart from dullcote)
The Dwarven canon can act as allies in KoW to a human army, and get the handy Warsmith who lets you re-roll misses, nice (and very cheesy).

In the background are the two Elven Dragon breaths - these are scratch built using Pendraken artillery carriages - still only at the block painting stage.

Playing WM tomorrow night - 2k of Araby in a four player fest. See if I can remember the rules after not playing for several months and playing lots of KoW in the interim.

Ta Nik.  I'm not certain where the bits originate from, from one of the chaps I game with (and the design was his) They are certainly plastic bitz, the two 3 prongs tubes bits are quite different but one could be a smoke launcher. I have added small bits of brass tubes to the dragons heads as well.

I recognise the 'mouths' from when I had a lovely Iron Warriors army, long-since sold (why do we do that?)

You know what I like best though? That you (and others, natch, including me) are still building armies for Warmaster (the game that changed my [wargaming] life)...how cool is that?  8)
Title: Re: Fred's 2013 Painting Diary
Post by: fred. on 12 January 2013, 10:23:53 PM
Nik - while my gaming group loves its Warmaster armies and has ridiculous numbers of figures (I think over 150k points last time we added up) we are playing the Warmaster rules less and less. Personally I played lots more Hail Caesar over the last 18mts, and Kings of War recently. What is great though is that the armies based for WM are proving very versatile and playable with these nominally 28mm rule sets.

New Figures
Two small but heavy parcels at the end of this week
No 1 - lots of 6mm aircraft from Heroics and Ros - these were a christmas present from my wife, which had been delayed due to christmas holidays (and me ordering it rather late!!). I have decided to step down a scale for aircraft as the 10mm ones are rather large. By going with 6mm I was able to get ones to cover all my 10mm WWII armies - as well as gliders, tugs and dakotas for the airborne, all for £40.

No 2 - a small but important order from Pendraken - various bits to help round out my Elven and Human armies for KoW. Including lots of rock and tree creatures to round out my Forest Shamblers for the elves. I also bought the dragon rider for the Fantasy humans - which is a really nice figure, which I must photograph, as it is rather hidden in the human range (which I had always assumed was the same figures as the Medieval range).

Forest shamblers loosely arranged to check for fit. The shiney figures are Pendraken ones. Including

DN4 Rockman (the short rock creature)
DN59 Tile Golem (on a square base reaching up)
DN60 Frost Troll
AC26 Boulder Elemental
AC27 Tree Elemental

These figures have been sprayed and painted today!! Which must be some record, just over 24 hrs from door step to painted. They are just drying on their bases so no photo yet.

Forest Shamblers

Got these figures, painted and based - super fast progress!! In part due to the fairly simple dry brushed painted job.

One stand of the large Kallistra ones to do, and a single based one as the Tree Herder - which I want to customise with some extra branches to make it even taller.

FK - you may be right the Romans should be very worried - Teutoburger Wald, the trees revenge.

A question, should the biggest trees have foliage added?

Painting Comp

Some initial thoughts about entries for the painting comp - I've no shortage of possible entries - perhaps too many options looking at the below list, as I'm likely to want to paint a unit (so 2 or 3 stands) rather than just one stand...

Foot - Pre-20th C. - Min: 3 / Max: 16 figures on a single base, and pre-1900.
LoA
Romans

Foot - 20th C. - Min: 3 / Max: 16 figures on a single base.
German Paras

Mounted - Min: 3 / Max: 10 figures on a single base.
Late Romans (feels a bit last year!)
Republican Romans
WSS Cav

Vehicle - Single vehicle on or off base.
French tanks - started last year, but never got beyond basic block painting.
Various British softskins
Still more British NW Europe armour (3rd year in a row!!!)

Fantasy & Sci-Fi - Anything Fantasy or Sci-Fi oriented, maximum base size of 60x60mm.
Lizardmen
Dragon Rider

Open - Single Base - Anything which doesn't fit into the other categories, with a max base size of 100x100mm.
??? - could be command stand from any of the above

Open - Army! - Armies, Dungeons, whole table setups, anything!
WSS Armies - nice and colourful
British Desert forces (bit old) - but never fully finished.

The next step is to get some figures out - and get them cleanup and base coated.

I have a dragon rider to do too!
Maybe we should have a paint off (no, you'll win)!
Title: Re: Fred's 2013 Painting Diary
Post by: fred. on 20 January 2013, 03:50:21 PM
Lemmy, sorry, hadn't seen your comment - a paint off would be cool - perhaps Leon could have this as a category in future, were everyone has to paint the same model! I'm not sure the result between us is a forgone conclusion at all!

The dragon rider is a cool figure, and is completely lost in the catalogue - I also think it must be very hard to cast with the lance running parallel to the neck, but a fair way off.

Painting Comp
Not a lot of progress this week - felt under the weather most evenings then been out or busy with DIY lots this weekend (assembled a desk for my wife, that took the best part of 3hrs - and I'm normally pretty good with flat pack furniture - this one had 35 pieces of wood and not very good instructions!!!)

Went through my figures during the week to pick some out for the comp - discovered just how many figures I have in boxes - a 9l Really Useful box with 4 layers of trays inside conceals an awful lot of figures.

Sorted and cleanup figures for 6-8 entries, and managed to get them sprayed. Blocked on a couple of colours so far.

This is definitely something which I'd like to do, where we'd put together a handful of figures, plus a base, and folk have to put together something using them.  I might bring this in for the 2014 comp.

Feeling much better today - just in time to go back to work on Monday morning  :'(

Did a bit of painting tonight, blocked in the green skin for the lizardmen.

Gaming

Played KoW again on Friday - Lizardmen and Araby style humans trying to run off with the loot from a temple, vs Elves and Dwarfs trying to stop them and get the treasure for themselves. The Lizardmen / Human alliance won - not least due to me and the Dwarf player not paying enough attention to the victory conditions and board layout, we spent too much time killing their troops rather than trying to get the treasure. But it was a fun game, even if we were rather slow on the uptake of how to win  :o

Painting
Got a bit done this weekend, some blue coats for some of my LoA riflemen - going for Dutch Guarde te Voet.

I also messed around scratching buliding a rocket launcher for the Kingoms of Men army for KoW - its based on the Pendraken organ gun with scratch built rockets and smoke trail shamelessly copied from Dougie's falklands figures!

This is it in its bare format - looks rather odd.

Not a huge amount of painting this week, again...

Probably need to get on with figures for the painting comp, but keep getting distracted.

Friday night played a big game of Kings of War - we used 10mm figures (of course) but went with near to 28mm unit footprints. So a unit of infantry was 6 warmaster bases, and a regiment of cavalry was a massive 10 stands.

Here some Pendraken Minotaurs  (as ogres) take the hill - but were swept away by Elven cavalry the next turn.

Title: Re: Fred's 2013 Painting Diary

On Saturday I made 20 more trees - using Faller plastic armatures and clump foliage. To give a bit of colour variation and just to provide some more trees - these are like the ones that can be seen top left of the battle photo above.

I also made a bunch more mini dice holders for casualty markers, taking two of the small square frames made by Minibits, and gluing them to a 10x20mm base. For KoW units can rack up a fair few casualties so a double dice holder helps, to both keep the dice together, and to keep them showing the right way up. An earlier one of these can be seen at the back of the Minotaur unit.

Managed to put a couple more colours on figures for the painting comp - but generally these are having slow progress. I think I'm going to need to get a couple of entries finished, then see where I am at, otherwise I will end up with many half-finished ones, which won't be any good. Also getting distracted with useful, but not any use for the competition stuff like the trees and casualty markers doesn't help much.

KoW again on Friday night - Men vs Undead. This was so one-sided it was nearly embarrassing - but we manfully stuck to turning the undead into piles of dusty bones. After 3 turns about 2/3rds of the undead were dead, for the loss of 1 hero and 1 small unit of men!!! As an Undead army won the recent KoW tournament, this says lots about the undead commander  :P

Sunday - had a rummage through my 28mm Perry WotR figures - and realised I have about 1800 pts - a good amount to play in the various tournaments that are happening. For 10mm we are typically playing with 3000 pts. Did a basing on a fair number of stands, with not too much work these figures will get to playable, then to finished - again nothing useful for the painting comp  :o

This is becoming a bit of a what did I do last week, style of diary...

I've been playing lots of Kings of War lately, and looked at my 28mm figures to see what I had in the way of KoW armies - and my Perry WoTR plastics seemed a good match. They  have been a bit of and ad hoc project - mainly as I like the plastic figures, but have never had a game in mind. So with a bit of organising I realised I had enough figures to make a decent sized army - it may be a bit bow heavy being WoTR but it looks promising and will at least let me get these finished.

As part of this I ordered some large custom MDF bases from Leon to make movement trays for the figures - these were very reasonably priced, and delivered very quickly. And while I was on the minibits site I managed to spend another £15 on other important bits and peices  :)

Played KoW (in 10mm) on Friday night. Elves vs Twilight Kin, which were mainly Abyssals (aka Demons). It was another good game swung back and forwards. Both sides made extensive use of flyers - which while very mobile struggle to deal an effective blow. In the end it was a draw, though I will claim a minor win as I was 500 pts ahead at the end (needing 600 for a win)

Well its been an age since I posted on this thread  :-[

I've been busy with 28mm stuff, Bretons for Saga, and lots and lots of Perry WoTR for Kings of War (which can be seen over on the Mantic forum should you be interested http://forum.manticblog.com/showthread.php?3493-Pathfinder-event-KoM-from-WoTR/page2  ) - I've also bought in to the In Her Majesty's Name line, so have a figures for that to paint too.

But tonight I did managed to paint some 10mm, and it was Pendraken  :D

Lots of bats for a mate, that I finished off for him, as I was fed up of facing the shiny blobs of coal across the table!

This is turning into a hall of shame this year !!

Actually painted some Pendraken 10mm - some WWII Germans, heavy weapons and NCOs to use for Chain of Command - a few single and small group bases should add to my many existing stands of infantry to work with CoC.

They will be forth coming.

On Thursday they were still on painting sticks, so everything was a bit dark due to the black spray.

They have been part based now, and should be finished today or tomorrow.
Title: Re: Fred's 2013 Painting Diary
Post by: fred. on 30 August 2013, 06:04:07 PM
I have finished the Germans - but forgot to take photos  :(

Obviously the next thing up is Fire Lizards.

I have been looking at the new Forces of Nature list for Kings of War, and like the look of the list, and I can build lots of the list from figures I already have (and mainly Pendraken ones at that). I am trying to decide on the colour scheme for the Fire Lizards / Salamanders.

Obviously the core colour is red - a fairly a deep red.

For weapons I am thinking about black - perhaps a gloss black. Another option is brass.

A few have shields - I am thinking of black for these as well, probably with brass bands.

For bases I am not sure, I had initially wondered about a black / grey colour - but think this make make everything a bit too dark. My normal basing is a brown, with clumps of green flock - but this seems wrong for fire creatures.

Any thoughts on these chaps?

Can you 'rough' a single one out Fred....and post a pic ?
Be easier to tell from that I reckon. :-\
Black/Red/Brass should look pretty good......Depends on the 'percentage' of each colour as to whether they look a little too dark. :-\ (I think !)
Cheers - Phil.

The Forces of Nature.
There are a bunch of Pendraken figures in the Forest Shamblers and Sylvan Kin. The Sylphs are 6mm from Microworld.

Some Centaurs and Gnomes from Pendraken will help fill out the ranks.

But, I am struggling to find some Air Elemental models - only need 4-6 models.

If there aren't any in the pendraken cataloh, check these out:

It's big at 55mm tall though.

You also have smaller ones, but seems they come mixed in packs so you don't get to choose wich ones you get:

My Forces of Nature army for Kings of War, has finally come together, and even got a game last night

This has proved a very cheap army to assemble - only about £20 spent on new figures for it - the rest I already had sitting in my lead pile

Figures are from a right mix of manufacturers, the main pendraken units are shown below

Salamanders - using Lizardmen

Fire Elementals - the smaller ones are Pendraken, the large ones Kallistra

Was expecting to only get 3 bases out of the figures - but managed to get 4 bases, which is 4 troops for KoW, or 2 Regiments, or a Horde

This gives my Araby army a lot of heavy fire-power on top of the artillery added the other week.

I was just looking at them all, and trying to remember how many I thought I was going to put on a base, and how many units I thought I needed. The figures are an army pack and 3 single packs. Which after a quick check on the website should be 35+15, so 50 in total.

Thanks Chaps

So what is the collective noun for Centaurs?

How about a clatter of Centaurs?  :-\

Last night played Kings of War (KoW) - we had 7 players, 3 on the nominally good side (but don't tell the dwarves that the elves where Dark Elves), 3 on the demon/chaos side, and me with a double sized Nature army holding the objective.

This is part of my force at the start of the battle - with a fair few Pendraken figures in view. In the distance can be seen the demon hordes. It was a very fun game - we generally rather forgot the objective (capture the swamp) and just attacked everyone. The Chaos knights ran away from the Dwarves!! The Demons managed to get into the swamp as the clock ran down - although I still had a lot of units left to eject them, they were a bit too far away.

Managed to get some productive painting done today

Empire Pistolliers (thanks to Hertsblue's vote)

These need their bases finishing and can then join a similar unit to give me a regiment for KoW - though I haven't quite decided a unit of what yet...

Then made good progress with my WWI French - they will form the core of the 2nd Regiment

Also started to spray the centaurs - I lined up the Centaurs and gnomes, and started spraying black, got all of one side done, swapped them round, but couldn't coax anymore black out of the can.

Went to get a spare can (and the dark brown) but this was thwarted by not being able to get to the extra spray cans under the stairs due to Christmas stuff.

Managed to spray a few white, and some middle brown, so can start on those at some point

Also de-based some Pendraken British WWI infantry, and start to paint them. The British are so much easier than the French - a quick heavy dry brush of brown all over the figure, and they are 80% done. The French have so many different colours in their uniforms, and such complex kit they really take some time to paint.

These guys should make a couple of battalions for GWSH
I even painted the 18 pdrs for good measure.

But how long will it take them to get painted :-(

My big orders often linger a bit in the lead mountain.
