Title: Thesslian cavalry help
Post by: gregernest on 24 December 2012, 05:13:13 PM
Been doing my own web research and just can't find a definitive answer to this.

Were the Thesslians on the side of Sparta or Athens in the Pelopenesian (sp?) wars?  or were they mercenaries.

I get the feeling that because they were in the North of Greece, they were with Sparta, but I'd like some other confirmation.

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the forum.

They sent a contingent to help Athens in the Peloponnesian War in 431BCE under Meno, and also were allied to Philip (and later Alexander) of Macedon during the Macedonian conquest period.

Also, afaik, both Philip II and Alexander III were also tagos kings of Thessaly elected by their nobility.
