Title: normandy '44 painting progress
Post by: petercooman on 23 December 2012, 12:58:03 AM
Hey all, just finished my first ever 10 mm model today, it was quite hard actually, coming from a much more forgiving 6mm scale  :P

I did notice i forgot the inner part of the track, will paint that in tomorrow!

Thanks!

Only thing i'm doubting is washing the tracks with black wash. They look a bit too shiny to me, but mayne that's good to see the differance at a distance??

Hi Peter,

I find its better to paint the tracks light/mid brown to start off.

I like painting vehicles because you do not have to be too exact, generally I do the following for a Europe/Russia setting:
1. After painting the vehicles basic colours, applying any decals/ids and the tracks brown is where the fun begins.
2. Use a big brush and apply plenty of black wash all over the tank. Apply a second time to the oily dirty bits on engine decks, around the wheels and at the back of the tank where the exhausts are.
3. Using the original tanks colours you used, dry brush over this to bring the correct colours out but now with depth.
4. Use a big wet brush or even better an air-brush and apply a muddy colour to the lower parts of the tank as a thick wash as required.
5. Using a very light dry brush effect, apply grey/beige/buckskin over the top areas of the tank to represent general dirt and dust.
6. If you have an air-brush a little watered down black applied sparingly to end of gun barrel looks nice.
7. Finally dry-brush silver over the tracks to show the metal coming through all the mud and gunk they've picked up.

All very satisfying and no eyestrain  :)

Hope that is of use, Cheers Rob  :)

Definately good info! I'll have to try that on the next batch though, as I already have 6 more down to the finishingg touches. I did hesitate about splashing the sides of the tank too, mind you, but i decided not to, because of the small scale...

Ok so next batch is ready!

I "dirtied" these up a bit, including the AVRE. Only concern is that the camo on the shermans is to brigth, but i'll let it sink in a bit. It looks ok to me, but i'll know for surewhen i see them on a table.

Love the work.  8)
Shermans: Ink wash it, then Highlight the cammo on the Shermans with grey-green and then a hessian/buff type colour will tone that down a lot!
Title: Re: normandy '44 painting progress
Post by: petercooman on 24 December 2012, 12:20:29 AM
Thanks!

Already washed them with dark green, but i'll have another go ;)

Is the dirt on the sherman crab ok? I overdid it on that one's front, as i figured a tank ploughing mud to remove mines would get quite dirty :p

I'll have a look at resizing my pics in the future too, pretty annoying :)

I used to have the same problems.
Hope it helps !

Good efforts.

I'll echo Rob in saying the tracks are always better painted brown.

I'd avoid black washing though as i think it looks unnatural.  Better to wash the whole model in brown ink.  Gives a more natural muted tone.

Hi Peter,

You seem to have mislaid the loaders for your Vickers MGs - I think they may be the kneeling chaps leaning forward on the 3 right hand infantry stands?

I've only got a photo of the desert ones but it should give you an idea

Hi, the loaders for the vickers are being painted off the stand and will be added later, that way i can reach them better to apply the paint ;)

The lyig down figures on the infantry stands are piat ammo carriers, the the trooper with the piat itself is again being held separate for ease of painting.

I must say i have visited your site a lot when i put my order togheter, nice pictures and a good read for anyone interested in gaming with the Brits!! Hat's tipped to you!  <)

It's firmly dug in my favourites :p

@Blaxkleric: They are based following the old BKC standard, and will be used to play BKC II .O enjoy that one very much, and think it gives a good game without slowing much down. I will have to look into playing earlier battles too though, as i've heard from various sources that the game is even more enjoyable in those periods, when there was less heavy material.

@ Fred: wich brings me to you, i am already watching your site for the afrika models on there :p. I doubted what i was going to do when i was making my order, and in the end went for normandy 44. Being a big fan of the cruiser tanks, i wanted to do DAK and 8 army too though. When i have ordered my russkies, i'll begin looking into them ;)

So some progress on these chaps, finished the bases for my next batch of trees, finished some support and the hq and went back and changed up the camo on the shermans. I think they look much better now .

Funny that everyone works hard at muddy bases in 20th century, but nobody in wargaming history has ever bothered to do it for hoplites or ashigaru or dog soldiers. All of whom probably had to clean their boots at times too (metaphorically, before I'm overwhelmed by a load of cobblers).

Well it is harder to get a muddy finish on a 10mm guy's foot i guess  ;D

So been a while since i updated this, all to do with the painting contest actually, as i can't post pics of my finished stuff if i want to enter it  :D

I am however making terrain at the moment, as you can't have 'little' normandy without little hedges and walls  ;)

Still work in progress , but just couldn't resist to snap some pics:

Been a while since i posted something again, have painted a bunch of stuff, but been holding back the pics so i can still decide wich ones will go into the paintig comp  ;D

I have finished 2 universal carriers and a FAO carrier that i won't be entering though, so i will show you these, and 2 6 pounders should follow closely tomorrow evening! First pic is a bit dark, but it's too late for me to take a new one, got to be up for work in 6 and still need to grab some sleep :P (i know someone willl say sleep is overrated but still, some sleep ain't bad)

Well kev, apart from the odd revell kit (like 2 in 10 years  :P ) these are my first ever WWII wargame minis! The painting for these looks like my cup of tea though :)

It also helps that i'm actively gaming the period, gives me more 'drive' to get them finished!

Hmmm means i did these faster :p

I got these done from basecoat to finish in about 7-8 hours. I must say i rushed it a bit, as i want to get started on the russians. Yeah yeah i know there weren't any russians in Normandy, but for the time being we can use my gaming buddy's german army. I have a battlegroup of russians for late war waiting to be painted. (just received my IS tank and mortars today actually, wich i fell short off, because the cash was all gone with my last order  ;D )

It's always better to first paint something that no one has in the group, as to paint something that we'll have double. That way we can get more different games in :p

Little update, due to real life painting is going slow. I did however paint all the ammo pouches and belts, woodwork on the guns, radios, mine detectors and flamethrowers and the maps of the officers today.

Tomorrow is game day so no painting, but friday should see these finished. Basing them will be a different pickle however  ;D

Hi Peter
This project is coming on in leaps and bounds I've thoroughly enjoyed following it. I'm afraid real-life conspires against us all when it comes to wargaming.

Take care

When I heard that Adolf Hitler started out as a house-painter I just thought he slapped on the Dulux. Then I went to Oberammergau...

Most impressive!! :o

Well real life did it again, instead of being able to paint this weekend, i have been struggling to even get in my bed before 4 o' clock.

Let's just call it, euhm , a reunion with an old "non wargaming related" favourite past time from my youth.

There, that was a nice way to say it  :D :D :D

Hey all!

Been a while since i updated this one, but as some have seen, i finished the ruskies first. I have started Ze Germans now. In my thread about the russians i asked what i should paint first, and most said the infantry so i can get solo games in.

Now this got me thinking, i would have needed my command bases then, and as they included some vehicles like kubelwagens and the like i had to do these first. Then i thought, might as well do the transports for the infantry and the guns then. ANd then i thought, might as well do a tank destroyer or too then so i could use them in my games right away. Then i thought.....

Long story short, i just painted whatever german vehicle i had in my to do box  ;D ;D ;D ;D

Here's a picture of the progress, bases have been started, and the vehicles just need the drivers and crew done and they are finishe. Not pictured here are 10 bases of infantry in the form of the gun crews, hq's etc...

And they are finished!

On the pics you will see some loose vehicles, these are meant for my command bases, although some are to be based normally, but as i have a shortage of bases for the moment (as in not a single one left) i can't finish them  :(

However i will when Leon sends my order over so the wait isn't long :D

The schwimmwagens and pzII L are pithead, all rest is pendraken!

Yep, I particularly like the the motorbikes. Most wargamers don't realise how many troops rode to battle on two wheels or three.  ;)
Title: Re: normandy '44 painting progress
Post by: petercooman on 02 August 2013, 06:23:01 PM
Well as you can see, i have some bikes left. just enough to make 4 stands and have a spare for a command base. when everything is finished, this gives me a company on bikes and a recce unit on bikes.

At least that's what i think now, i keep changing my mind about these. Right now i am thinking:

2 bases with 1 with and 1 without sidecar, 1 base with two regular bikes, and one base with just 1 with a sidecar (for the recce).

But as i already have a schwimmwagen for the recce i'm not sure  :-\

I want to keep them as correct as possible : two places on a bike, and one in a sidecar, so a stand with 1 of each equals transport capacity for 5 men wich is equal to the number of men on an infantry stand  8)

But i'm not sure....
Title: Re: normandy '44 painting progress
Post by: Duke Speedy of Leighton on 02 August 2013, 06:29:27 PM
Just to confuse
Bikes can carry two. Sidecar combinations three...

If it helps, I also based my motorcycles in two's: either one regular and one with sidecar, or two with sidecar. And I did an extra two on a short base for a recce unit. And I have several on command stands as well.

I wouldn't worry too much about how many men could be carried. After all, a truck or SdKfz 251 can carry how many? Double the number of men on a base or more, I would think. I always think of transport as enough trucks/halftracks/bikes to carry the platoon. So it could be four trucks, or three halftracks, or twelve motorcycles. Doesn't really matter, as far as I'm concerned.

Well, if you sleep as much as i do (so very little) , and you have a five year old that sleeps  early, you can do some painting if the day is over.

My wife had the twilight saga to watch (and god knows i don't want to watch that cr*p), and i had some models to paint. Vacation is relaxation, and there are few things that relax me more than painting, so why not combine the two?

In the afternoon i got the game in, and just now i finished the basing on all my germans.Yes all of them  :D

edit: the 4 small round bases are test figures for my ww2 skirmish forces
