Title: Scratchbuilding chain wheel protection
Post by: GrumpyOldMan on 18 October 2012, 12:59:37 AM
Hi

I'm fiddling around with scratchbuilding some armoured vans/buses and I've tried scratchbuidling the chain protection for the wheels with various materials but they don't look right. Has anybody tried anything similar or have any ideas?

Cheers

"Just" sculpt it.

I'm not sure on that one?  Is there any textured plasticard available in the thinner variety, which could be used?  Or completely randomly, what about thin strips of paper/card, with vertical slices in to make the appearance of something there?  It's going to be difficult to get them to look like chains at this scale though.

As 'B' says...sculpting it with green stuff (or similar), perhaps ?
Might work to a certain extent, by doing it like very fine chainmail.....though it might look a bit 'clunky' and oversized.
Not being a vehicle person, I can't get my head round how wide the vehicle shown is at this scale....
Can you let me know ?....I'll have a quick play around with some Green Stuff on a piece of plasticard.
Cheers - Phil.

Suitably cut net curtain might work....

Thinly-sliced foam from a blister pack might do it as well?

Hi All

Thanks for the responses and thoughts. I saw these and other trucks and thought "Hmm, this means I don't have to get more wheels." Getting the chains right is even more of a bother! Not the first time I've been hoist by my own petard, and probably won't be the last  ;D ;D

At the moment I'm looking for very fine material that will retain the weave, that I can dry brush to look like chains but most of the stuff I've found is too coarse for this scale. Will Keep looking.

Techno - on the size of the vehicles, yes I was surprised too. Here are some other pictures with people to give a better idea of scale.

Cheers

Hope they never took those things cross-country. And turning tight corners must have been interesting, too.  ;D

Chain mail has made an interesting come back in AFVs.  The IDF has fitted the rear of the Mekerva turret with such mail as the design turned out to be a potential trap for RPG7 and Saggers.  The suspended chains work well.
