Hello all,
I have a dilemma!
My wargaming loves are, ACW, AWI AND FPW, the rules I have are civil war battles, principles of war, and black powder. The problem I have is space! My wargaming boad is 4'x4' this is ok for civil war battles, but I find its not very good for the rest, especially black powder, even using cm instead of inches, so you see I need a rule book that I can field big battles on a smallish set up, can anyone please advise!

Volley and bayonet can be played in cm or half cm scale, after that I'm out of options after those you havealready mentioned...
There is the Pendraken trial set? Or various 6mm sets :D
Hi Lemmy,
Ah did think might struggle with this one, thanks for your help will look into v&b see what they like?
4 x 4 should be enough for BP in cm, assuming you reduce frontages. 4 ft is 120cm = equivalent to 10' x 10' if useing inches
It's ok and does kinda work, only seems to be too small when you want to do flank moves and stuff like that, does that make sense?
4 x 4 or 4 x 3, I'm using Maurice up to his 100pt army limit using 2 bases on 30x20mm 16 fig battalions, 8 fig cav units, 8-10 skirmishers, gun on 30 x40 and commanders/notables on 30mm rds works fine, you can deploy in depth and still have movement, perfect for a small space and fujn!
And LOL's yes you others I gave in and went for the two bases and not four as per the rules, lols you was right me was wrong :D :D
Ok not quite the periods you listed but

gives a cracking battle on a 4 x 4, with around 40 units on the table, the figure count is also low so thats always a bonus. I'd say take a look at it, it would just need a little tweaking for your earlier and later periods. The price is attractive as well, just a fiver (or thereabouts).
Thanks guys,
Have just found a Maurice lite version with free cards so may get them printed off and have a proper read, not sure my basing is right tho or does that really not matter?
nope doesn't matter mate as long as both sides are consistent
IIRC most Peter Pig rulesets use 4x4 tables; They have a set for AWi (Washington's Army) so maybe check that out to see if it followsthe Piggy norm. I've got a copy soemwhere, but here in the office :(
Piggy rules use a 5 x 3 table, or it may be a 6 x 3 table, its certainly not a 4 x 4. The general idea is that at kick off youre too close to do much redeploying, you just have to get stuck in. Civil War Battles, I'm a big fan of, Washington's Army, not so much, in CWB its kinda hard to get a brigade to charge in with the bayonet, in WA its just a bit too easy, that and the fact that the target unit almost always routs rather tham face the charge.
Have to say I do like piggy rules, PBI, BLOODY BARONS and CWB are all in my collection, most are 5'x3' so what I do is chop a foot off then off I go:)
Thanks for the correction Gordon :) Haven't actually played WA yet as I'm still recruiting the armies and the Exchequer is going through a lean patch :( Read them through a few months back and somehow got 4x4 stuck in my head.
WA was a dissapointment after CWB, the differences are subtle but they change the entire nature of the game, it may indeed be historically accurate but isnt much fun for the non-Brit player. I'm re-basing the troops for Tea for Two, but would be interested to know how you find the game.
