Title: Game of Thrones
Post by: sixsideddice on 30 September 2012, 01:01:36 PM
I`d like to ask a question please, but without the answer ruining it for me. I`m only on book one of Game of Thrones (having watched HBO`s first season on DVD and being thoroughly blown away by it) so don`t want to know what’s coming next; in a mad moment… which I don`t regret for a moment... I bought all seven books in one go, to make sure I got them all with matching covers.

My question is (without spoiling anything for me), how possible is it to set up a D&D campaign within that world, using D&D type monsters and magic. Already I`ve read a chapter which hints at Manticores, Wild magic from the far East, and dark things lurking in the vast forests, but so far the book seems extremely magic low (which I like a lot) and apart from Direwolves and long trecks into the wild, there doesn`t seem to be any chance of dungeon complexes  or beasties. I know it’s easy enough for any DM`s worth their salt to add these additions for themselves, but I am interested in keeping the tone and feel of the books without diluting things with generic elements that simply don`t fit.

Cheers in advance,

Six  :-\

Dungeon complexes don't really occur. There are underground areas under a couple of castles - but while these are labyrinthine they tend to be fairly empty of monsters.

The Wall and areas to the north, have the larger number of traditional fantasy monsters.

Magic stays at a low occurrence - occasionally it can be very powerful, but usually with consequences, its certainly not AD&D style magic. Sorry can't recall all of what happens in book one, so I'll stay a bit vague at this point.

It would be a bit like using LoTR (without the Orcs) as a fantasy campaign setting.

The Pendragon RPG would seem like a good set of rules for GoT (though my knowledge of RPGs is 20 years out of date!!!!)

How about the official RPG?

Thank you so much Fred, that helps me a lot actually... hmm  like Middle Earth but without Orcs; actually that sounds really appealing. Labyrinthine castles (without monsters), I`m sure I can invent a few of those filled with ghosts and booglies (horror) and a few more filled with underground complexes bursting with subterranean nasties.

Gordon, wow... thanks for the link, I`ll check it out immediately. Looks really cool. I`ll read all I can about this and see if I get my hands on a PDF download copy that I can crib and steal bits from to add to my own rules.

Just wait til you find out what lurks beyond the wall!

The overriding impression I get from having read all the books is the ultimate evil in the Kingdom(s) of Westeros is man's own stupidity and greed! There are some NASTY monsters around, but nothing compared to some of the Royal houses!

OOooooo thanks Lemmey, all sounds amazing... can`t wait. Yes, I have already forged a clear impression, the Throne`s worst enemy is mankind itself. Oh the potential for playing is boundless.

It's a cracking series of novels. My brother bought me the first 4 books 8 or 9 years ago.

My only fear is that Mr Martin will never finish. This series started 16 years ago and the last 2 books have taken an age to be released and haven't really advanced the story on much.

Good world to RPG, there are plenty of monsters (living/unliving) but unlike other fantasy worlds there is only one race (humans).

This all actually sounds really appealing Munslow. I tend to read books quite slowly nowadays (Thrones is being read about 4 chapters a day) as I usually read about four books/series at a time; but I`m sure I`ll be crying out for more once I near the end. Interesting, I didn`t know the books were an ongoing creation... again, that’s a bonus with an epic isn`t it. Imagine Tolkien was still around and writing follow ups to Lord of the Rings, wow what a treat.

I like that humans are the main protagonists and good guys in Thrones. I`ve been trying to get players to realise the fun of playing humans as opposed to Elves, Dwarves, Halflings, etc  for years now.

oooh, and there`s monsters to come too. What more could a happy gamer want  :D

I agree. It'll be a great day for wargaming when people start concentrating much more heavily on humans.

Shades of Robert Jordan?

Quite enjoyed The Wheel of Time series, but by the time each book became 10% plot advancement and closure, 20% new plot, 75% wandering round in circles I gave up...  (:| I-)

THEN the bugger went and died!  #-o
