Title: undercoating
Post by: Nosher on 13 September 2012, 07:03:12 PM
For years I have used Halford Matt Black to undercoat but recently I have noticed that I am finding it harder and harder to pick out the detail when painting smaller figures.

i recently tried white and then remembered why I switched to black in the first place many moons ago...

I saw recently a mention of Halfords Camouflage Brown on the forum but damned if I can find it now...

Anyone care to share?

At times I have gone for a light dry brush over the top of the dark base coat to make it easier to see details. I use the army painter browns for base coats quite a bit, especially for horses.

Black undercoat & an overbrush - been doing that for longer than I can remember - usually Charred Brown or Beasty Brown [unless I'm doing SYW white uniforms when I'll use grey]  :)

I'm loathe to add another stage by undercoating in black and then overbrushing... plain lazy :-[

Can anyone reember the link (only a few days ago) which showed a tin of Halfords Matt primer? It was camo brown or some such like...

Here

you can get 400ml of Liquitex water-based acrylic spray paint for the same price - £7.99. Probably with the same finish as the tube paint. Haven't used it yet. There's also Montana Gold spray 400ml for £4.99 - varies matt to shiny. Humbrol also has a brown spray - called dark brown but more khaki/tan -  £3.99 for only 150ml. Humbrol and Halfords probably the most matt. Montana Nitro 2G spray paint (500ml for £4.60) is said to be very matt but no brown as yet.

Cheers, Michael

I've used Montana sprays before for arty crafty projects - they seem quick thick - I'd be wary of using them on figures

I've been using the Tamiya fine surface primer for undercoating WWII armour recently. It's light grey and lets the detail through quite nicely. A light spray of base coat (Tamiya dark yellow) then stands out quite vividly.
