Infantry next...
Can't wait to see the finished project.
It does bring up a question about your technique...
Do you strive to paint the hard to reach areas on the multi-figure base? My normal method is to glue figures on craft sticks, paint them and then put them on bases. However, for my WWII figures I do base them prior to painting but I only have two or three figures on a base. For multi rank bases it would seem the back of the front rank and the front of the back rank would be difficult to reach. But I have wondered why I fret about painting the scabbard or haversack and the like on figures when it won't be seen depending on what rank they end up in.
Tom
I can't speak for Nik, but I don't worry about parts I can't reach and therefore probably won't be seen on the table. But then I paint to a good gaming standard and no more. Life is too short and I want to get the figures on the table to a standard that I'm happy with.
:o 8)
WOW! :o
What you doing after lunch then Nik?

Problem is, "can't reach to paint" and "not visible on the table" are often two very different things, Steve. :-\
I'm running out of superlatives, Nik. :-bd
This question comes up quite a bit [funnily enough, it arose the last time I did some SYW :)]
Essentially I do paint pretty-much everything; I can get brushes to where I want - have a look at this thread:
http://www.pendrakenforum.co.uk/index.php/topic,709.0.html
And this issue - with some illustrative pics - is mentioned on later pages here:
http://www.pendrakenforum.co.uk/index.php/topic,709.45.html
http://www.pendrakenforum.co.uk/index.php/topic,709.60.html
Hope that helps :)
I've come to the conclusion that, for my purposes anyway, I shall do all open order figures (WW2 etc) "on the base", and all close-order stuff (Marlburian etc) on battens. Chacun a son gôut, as they say. :)
Your title to this post has puzzled me from day 1, Nik.
Very nice!
I'm very interested to see how this project progresses.

So far Nik, very nice, take your time I'm no hurry the builders are adding more dust per day here.

:) Thanks Colin - and welcome to the forum 8)
Real life is interfering during the week at bit at the moment - but the weekend looms large (they've progressed a touch from those last pics as well) and I'm hoping to get the bulk of the infantry done :)
Glad the builders are carrying on too :D
Pics here of basecoat uniform colours for infantry & artillerymen - this is the phase when they look really messy - but don't panic, they'll look better soon... ;)

Hi Nik,
Thanks for the update.
Yep they do look messy, no worse than the Vikings that have just made their way to my painting desk.
I have faith though that these will look much more impressive very soon!
Cheers
Colin
I have sad memories of my 15mm Vikings. They looked so good, but I found them terribly limiting to play. A bit like various other heavily specialised armies (Greeks, Scythians, Hussites, Sioux come to mind).
Mmm, and I've just finished my Zulus. Uh oh....
Are you going for blue artillery carriages? I thought the french red/brown wood with black metal on their artillery? I'm far from an expert in this period though.

"Artillery Carriages
At the beginning of the XVIIIth century, French artillery carriages were probably red as were the gun carriages of the French Marine Royale. However, by the time of the Seven Years' War, gun carriages of the French army were blue to distinguish them from the equipment of the supply train (caissons and carts), painted brick red. Furthermore, canvas used with artillery equipment were usually decorated with a device consisting of two crossed cannon (in saltire) with a crowned "A" or "AA". The change to blue occurred very soon after the Vallière reform of 1732, even though the precise date is unknown. More details are available in the aforementioned article."From here: http://www.kronoskaf.com/syw/index.php?title=French_Artillery_Equipment
:)
Blue would be a good choice then :P
I knew for WSS red was right, but hadn't realised they had changed by SYW

Well, to be honest, now that the base colours for infantry uniforms & the flesh are done, it'll speed up from here...I think I'll probably now finish them off in this order:
- artillery
- commands
- cavalry
- infantry
- basing & finishing...
With a bit of luck, some decent headway all through the next week...

Top line painting of a picturesque type. But why are they so orderly and uniform in pose? These are hussars, after all; at this time they'd only just stopped taking heads after a kill.

Does anyone know of a CD with a good selection of mid-18th century military music? It could be pleasant background to SYW games, couldn't it? And how many periods allow you to play accompanying music composed by one of the C-in-Cs?
I got a couple for the AWI from;
http://www.mcvfifesanddrums.org/shop.html
Age of Reason, and Lafayette's Ghost (which appears not to be listed anymore). Not exactly SYW, but close enough. There are plenty of British marches, a few French and a few German.
Splendid work there Nik.
Not much left to do then :)
Very much looking forward to defeating the British with these in the next few weeks.

Well this is a treat for mad old me.
I have to thank Nik for what appears to be a most excellent Job. How on earth does he paint these figures is quite beyond me. I blame my eye sight on these monitors that have been part of my life for too long. 28mm is hard enough for me, so I suspect that Nik will soon have my 15mm British Waterloo army under his brush...
Thanks Nik, I'll await those hi-res pictures, but from what I can see so far all looks good!
Cheers
Excellent stuff Nik! 8)

Well this is a treat for mad old me.
I have to thank Nik for what appears to be a most excellent Job. How on earth does he paint these figures is quite beyond me. You're doing SYW
and Napoleonic? There's a horse-and-musket fanatic for you!

Recently I was invited to a game of Maurice after I wanted to try out the rules for ages. I watched the game and played a few turns and just loved the system. The command of one formation, the playing of the cards, it just made the game so tactical and so I decided to get a 10mm army and as no-one has French I chose them.
As for Napoleonic. I play Black Powder with 28mm and Lasalle with 15mm, but my 15mm need some painting love and as we as a club plan to do Waterloo in 3 years we're all building up huge forces and so as my eyes only allow me to paint 28mm I thought I'd give Nik a crack at some of the 15mm regiments.
Regarding playing both SYW and Naps, I tend to play pretty much any and everything. As long as the rules and opponent make it fun!
Cheers

Absolutely 8)
These are all complete now - sent Colin some hi-res pics taken in natural light earlier today for his approval; have since added 2 varieties of static grass, painted base edges and spray-matt-varnished them; will take some on-table pics later before boxing these up ready to return to their Commander-in-Chief for him to put to work against the British!
I've really enjoyed painting this army - and will be sad to see them go :(
But I'll look forward to seeing them in action on the madbeardman blog in due course 8)
Some fast on-table pics (more to come tomorrow): http://www.pendrakenforum.co.uk/index.php/topic,6074.0.html
Hi Nik,
I'm hoping that the army will like to come home (ie here). If they don't and they run away, let me know if they come back (like Cats).
I will give them a nice home (well when the builders have gone).
I'll let you know when I play a game with them, Thursday 4th October I think... I'll take some photo's and create a blog post for the game. Let's hope they win, I don't win much myself but I'll try!
Cheers
Col

At least they'll look fecking nice as they get annihilated! :d
I hope it was clear I spoke in admiration, not censure.
