Title: Arise Sir...?
Post by: Leon on 07 August 2012, 11:56:55 PM
With the success of Team GB, which of our new medal winners will be getting the bump into knighthood (or damehood) then?
(I'm thinking in the next 12 months, ala Sir Chris Hoy after Beijing.)

:-\

My money is on Bradley Wiggins, has to be a sure thing now.  And the fella that did the opening ceremony as well!

:D

But WHO is going to get BBC's sports personality of the year, now that Chris Hoy has 'beaten' Steve Redgrave's Gold tally ?  :-\
Cheers - Phil.

Well I would like Laura Trott to get it - Queen of the Track!

There's a few to choose from this year but it will probably be either Bradley Wiggins or Jessica Ennis. Or perhaps they'll need to share the prize they've both performed outstandingly this year.

A week or so ago, I would have said that nice Mr Wiggins was a total, absolute certainty.....
Now...Stroll on...What a choice of deserving chaps and chapesses !
VERY difficult to call, methinks.
Cheers - Phil.

Think you're right LH.  ;)
It's going to give 'Auntie' a bit of a headache with their nominations though, as 'by rights' they should only name ONE cyclist. :-\ :-\
Cheers - Phil

As Chris Hoy's probably going to bow out after the big "O" he may well get the sympathy vote.  :-\

Has he already won it once Ray ? Relatively recently ?
Be interesting to see whether the Beeb include him in their nominations because of that ? :-\
Cheers - Phil.

The French are alreay planning to rename the Champs Elysee, 'The Road to Wiggan's Peerage'.

Perosnally i find it derisory that any 'sporting' person gets a knighthood for running about (or sitting down going backwards, or whatever).

Dunno, who would you rather have defending the Monach with a big sword, Chris Hoy, Fred Goodwin or Jimmy Saville.

Personally I like the way that we still have these (now) meaningless things - Knighthoods, OBE's etc - its a way to recognise great acheivement.  I'm not saying maybe they aren't over used, but its still a unique way for the country to say 'Well done'.

Actually, anytime the Forum turns to politics I keep expecting Luddite to say "Some watery bing handing out swords is not the basis of a system of government".

Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.
