-[prolog]-
Well, this is my first post on pendraken. So for thos interested I thought I'd tell you, what I did, What I'm doing and my plans for the future.
-[In the grim darkness of the far past, there is ...]-
Well, I've been gaming for 20 years (it dosnt feel long since I was refused alcohol at a pub!) and for the most part it's been role play and games workshop (I was a blue shirt GW staffer at one point) and for the most part 40k (2nd ed onwards) but, without going into a rant, I can defend GW no more, with time and cash becoming both a rear commodity I had to look at some games systems and say Money+Time=X amount of fun. 40K seams to fall short now.
-[Present (depending when you read this]-
So now I'm just concentrating on things like Necromunda (remains untouched by share holders), Dark Heresy RP, Cyber Punk RP, a gang based Zombi survival game a good friend made (I have a lovely 'Hot Fuzz' gang).. Oh! and my Wife, Labridor and MGB (although not in any preticular order).
-[Future Echoes]-
But being part of a squad/gang/team is one thing... Were is that rubble in the ground as a army moves, the banging of the drums, the discharge of projectiles and the screams of wounded? So I looked at something I did long ago.. Zulu.
-[The Magnifying glass theory]-
Me and a friend (the same one as before, I don't have many) were talking one day on a country walk were we seam to come up with some amazing ideas, rules, political ideas (although most consist of the genocide of any one 75 or older and the semi-perminant castration of any one we 'two kings' decide is a Chav, it's a Dictatorship, I'm not saying it would pan out well) and we were talking about the micro scope idea. The idea of the more complex the rules and detail the closer the magnifying glass. So a gang game, 25mm+ models are spot on with a roster of how these guys are different ( Necromunda and Inquisitor is a good example), then skirmish, 25mm lose squads, 40k used to be good until it went above the 1500pt and I think it then should come into the realm of armies, not skirmish... So the idea was when a game goes above 150 or so men the magnifying glass should be taken feather away... So an army game, 10mm... I was talking to a friend (no a different one) who said "Pendraken, is the one for you, wade range of lovely models!" he was right! "Do they do Zulus?"
-[Zulu The Game]-
So me and my mate (the first one) have said "old 25mm Zulu I did was good, but a skirmish game, let's take that idea and do a company sized, squad based game" so we pulled the magnifying glass out and came to 10mm, So I made a board* , We both got a company + British force each and a large amount of Zulus form pendrake . Were writing a book that should include background on the forgotten war¥ and rules, clad in a battered leatherette cover like a 1800s officers pocket book.
-[Pendrake]-
Just a quick Note on Pendraken and Leon in Genral... We had a look into there new place, very cool indeed and Leon gave us the tour and made us feel very welcom.. Thanks Leon and Pendraken
Thanks all the Forum reader and players for listing
Vulpine
* Quick note on the board- I did a brown mud river bed and then clear varnish over the top for the fast flowing wide river... My mate said "Waters Blue" what a load of crape! I'm correct ain't I?
Â¥ In my research, I've found little written on the Anglo Zulu war compaird to other wars, I know it was reasonably short, but I have a theory that it might be because we were the bad guys.
Hello Vulpine, i think you should maybe have put this into the Intros & welcomes first :)
Man! Your right.... Any modifiers wanna shift it that would be fab!
Hi Vulpine, welcome to the Forum! Glad you liked the tour of the workshop!

PS, I've shifted this up to the Intro section.
Right... SHHHH! Now Yorky, Leon... If we all keep it quite nobody will ever know it was ever plased in the wrong category. We can all get away with it if we just keep our stories the same!
Welcome. If you like the Zulu war, have a go at the Sudan next. People who enjoy one usually see the appeal of the other. You get mounted troops and artillery (of a sort) to give your Brits a rough time, and low-grade allies, while the Mahdists have to deal with the fact that their army, unlike M'Pande's, includes lower-quality troops beside the fanatics.
Though the Zulus are the Spartans of Africa, I'm not denying it.
Welcome Vulpine :-h
FK's right...you'd love the Sudan too (and if you ask him nicely he might let you see his rules - which are great BTW)
Welcome Vulpine...
Don't worry about being a former member of the Evil Empire.....There are quite a few here already. ;D ;D
Cheers - Phil

Ah, you flatterer!
As you get a little older Vulpine you may wish to retract thoughts of killing people just because they are over 75 - Donald Featherstone is in his 90's and our Queen is somewhat over 75.
Now Chavs - there you have my agreement - but how to define them?
Anyway - I am glad you have discovered proper wargaming :)

The water would be blue on a nice clear day, and there was no sediment in it! It would depend on the depth and speed of flow as well I think. Blue is 'traditional', but muddy brown is more 'realistic'. Here's my efforts: http://kiwidave.pbworks.com/w/page/7780162/Scenery%20-%2010mm (http://kiwidave.pbworks.com/w/page/7780162/Scenery%20-%2010mm)

Hi all,
FierceKitty: I promise I'll look at Sudan. Although it may be some time with the rules that need to be written, Red coats to paint and a daft amount of Zulus to paint also (ask Leon, he probably spent 3 full days printing Zulus)
Nikharwood: Thanks
Techno: Evil empire... They didn't use to be. They used to be, amazing models so get the rules.. But just after I left as a staffer it all turned ti amazing rules so buy thos models. But let's not forget 2nd and in some respect 3rd ed 40k and never forget Necromunda!
Robert: When two kings are incharge, yes not everyone over 75... My mother in laws parents are still alive and I wouldn't want them killed and there are other exceptions... But being in charge I get to pick!
Kiwidave: Oh no! Your river looks fab... But that would mean king2 was correct! He did also say brown. I don't think I can let him know. But blue, that's light reflecting of the atmosphere ain't it? We need steven Fry here!
Thanks everyone for the welcome. I will get round to doing a Zulu board/Rule/Army thread soon!
Its like painting Elephants grey, if we painted them the correct colour then somehow they just look "wrong" on the wargames table, so in most cases, water gets painted blue because thats what were used to.
this is the true elephant colour

I want to discuss your medication with you, patient 0372.
Welcome
Duane
Just to throw in a random bit of trivia, out of all the different colour components in light, the blue rays can penetrate water the furthest, hence why the sea is blue. Green is the second furthest to penetrate, giving a greeny tint as well.

I was always told Nitrogen is blue, water reflects it. Maybe complete bollocks!
I've just done a bit of Googling, and the white, red wavelengths are absorbed, while the green and blue penetrate and are reflected. The water has to be at least 3 metres deep for this to work though apparently (I had a figure of 3ft in my head for some reason!).

The aquarium in Cape Town has a special tank to illustrate the light effects at different depths.
Best thing to do to work it out? As i based it on the river at the start of the film Zulu I should Watch Zulu and have a look at the river and copy whether it's brown, White it blue. Then whatever it is I'll mix in with the next coats of varnish.
I must say I'm surprised at how much you guys put into this answer. I'm wrestling over, how many riffles NNC have per unit of 10, how many men in a platoon, how many platoons in a company, what riffles did the mounted Dragoons use, how many Zulu squads on a table compaird to Brits, stat lines etc.
Oh, I put together some British yesterday... Looking smart!
Hello, and my head hurts...
Water is a Clear liquid it has no colour, it was clear running water in zulu (cos Michael Caine said so) ;D
If Micky C says it is, I cannot doubt him!
Surprised at how much you guys put into an answer - wait until you ask something interesting - you haven't seen anything yet ;D

No, no, no, no, no....He said "You're only supposed to blow the bloody doors off !"
What ?....Oh sorry. Wrong film ;)
