Title: Maurice Game
Post by: fred. on 09 July 2012, 09:23:29 PM
We played a game of Maurice on Friday, with a couple of players on each side, figures were pretty much all Pendraken.

British cavalry advance - they have just had the confusion card played on one unit, which has advance in front of the others!

Towards the end, the British infantry has advanced, following the withdrawal of the cavalry. The French eventually won the firefight, and we called it a night.

Overall a fun game, with lots of decision points, and the two new players seemed to like it - one that much he has order his first 10mm figures!!

The British artillery, which started out well, but inexplicably switched its fire to the French artillery (which is resistant to long range bombardment) to little effect

The figures look really nice! More reason for me to dabble in a period I know nothing about (other than I like tricornes :))

These really look the part, looks like a heck of a scrap!  :D

Thanks chaps.

It was a good scrap, it started out fairly cautious with long range bombardments, and a bit of a cavalry fight, then ended up with a multi turn infantry fire fight, which eventually whittled down the British.  For this game we played without National Advatages to keep the rules simple.

KD - I only really started WSS because I fancied a Red Coat army and tricorns look good!

Yeah, that's why I'm doing WSS- Sunjester said "What period next", and I said "Tricornes!"

We WERE going to do SYW - I had even bought the paint for the Russians, researched the uniforms etc.

Then at the Milton Keynes show SJ was offered 3 Pendraken WSS army packs at a £5 discount.  We bought the French and Prussian packs, I chose Prussia at random (the old 'hold it behind your back' method).  We presurised a friend into getting the English/British pack.

So, I ended up with a different army in a period for which we had no rules and no idea about the period.  It has ended up that £5 discount has cost me over £100 in this mystery period.

But hey, TRICORNES! (I have a tricorne to wear - Tricornes are cool).

Confusion cards, long range bombardments, ditches and bushes that 'weren't on the map' - beautiful!

I can't wait to play Maurice now that I've received the full rules package with the cards 'n all. These rules really seem to deliver on the 'period flavour' side like Nik and others promised when they recommended them on this forum. Plus they have a special rule for 'light' pike units which looks just right for the 1670's to 1690's. Up in my mancave in the attic, the coming winter will be Augsburg winter!

Cheers,
Aart

We're trying Maurice next week.  Quite looking forwards too it, especially given the insane pricetag.

It's an insane price tag but my goodness it's a good game. It's not necessarily incredibly historical (which is why my SYW Austrians now fight as the Margravate of Unterfreschdorf) but it is totally addictive. And you can see from the above photos how good it looks.

Second the Maurice sentiments, just a really good game. It does do 18th century, but not in mind numbing detail. The rules have a high degree of narrative which will frustrate true linear marchers.

I don't want to even think about how much that £5 "saving" has cost me. :o X_X

Played our first game of Maurice in anger this afternoon.

It's really very good.

Basically it appears to be a card game about army command, with figures on the table to mark command outcomes, but unlike other 'card activation' games Maurice seems to have some serious depth to it.

What we liked about them was that you are constantly having to make hard command decisions based on the situations the cards deal you each turn.

Do I pause and rally my line, while replenishing my command capacity (cards), or do throw my batter troops back into the line before my opponent can rally and take the risk of pressing forwards?

Do i sit back and let my cannons do the work, or do i push my cavalry forwards to exploit an open flank?

Do i press my successful attack or bolster my weakened holding line?

Marvellous stuff!

And the actual 'on table' rules are very simple (if a little fiddly in the token/record keeping stakes).

I think its going to take a fair while to get to grips with all the nuances of the game, but i suspect we'll be playing a lot more of these neat little rules!
