Title: APW 1866 using Regimental Fire and Fury
Post by: mollinary on 03 July 2012, 08:07:38 PM
Anyone thought of this conversion and willing to share ideas?   I am currently working on making one stand equal 80 men and 50 yards to the inch, but otherwise keeping the ranges in inches as per the rules (they would give the Lorenz an 800 yard range and the Dreyse 600 which seems about right).  Also 2 shots for one at less than 200 yards also seems right.   Extended line for Skirmishers (allow Prussians to detach, but keep within support range of main body? If go out, skirmish stands get a-2 on manoeuvre table?). Austrians charge only in storm column (4 deep) others can use field column (3 deep)? Extra minus for Austrians re fire, extra plus for using storm column in charge?  Give Prussians regimental commanders as extra brigadiers, so easier to command disparate units? Possibly consider allowing Prussians to break battalions into 2 equal halves?   Does anyone have any ideas?   I like the potential of this, Jicin on a 16ft by 7ft table, battalions of 48 figures on 12 bases. One gun model for three guns - so Austrian batteries 3 models, Prussian and Saxon 2 models.  Cavalry 2 bases per squadron.

Please comment any thoughts you may have - pro or anti.

An excited Mollinary

I've played F&F SOMETHING F-P - Not my period.  Get hold of Sunjester - he's your man.

It was a fun game though

I've had several great games using FIRE AND FURIA FRANCESE which is an adaptation of the original Fire & Fury. It's available here
http://www.wfgamers.org.uk/resources/C19/fandfmods.htm

I've used the variations for 1859 Austro-Franco-Italian, 1866 Austro-Prussian and 1870 Franco Prussian wars and been very happy with the results. :-bd

Thanks SJ,

In fact, I came across this some years ago after meeting Nick Dorell, and I agree it is an excellent set.  I am now, however, looking for something with a bit more tactical granularity, and thought of extending the idea to Regimental F&F where some of the mechanisms are rather different.  The reason for changing some of the scales was that APW battalions are so much bigger than ACW ones, and I was looking to fight a corps on corps action, of which there are a good number in the APW.  Looking at 20-30 infantry units a side, together with 10-20 batteries and a couple of cavalry regiments, the 80 man base (four figures) and 50 yds to the inch scale looked a possibility.  I am thinking of keeping the time period the same, and halving movement (or perhaps making it two thirds).  Otherwise, I think little else needs changing, beyond some of the ideas in my first post. Twelve base units gives quite a bit of flexibility for tactical formations.
