Title: Steam punk sort of
Post by: Maenoferren on 18 June 2012, 04:16:42 PM
Steam punk seems to be an up and coming area for wargames.
What fgures will be suitable do we think?
I would say we could do with a set of civilians that are unarmed ladies etc. some of the SCW and AVBCW stuff would do at a push
Tripods from the sci fi range
trains :)
Obviously the victorian range could be ransacked
WW1 range could also be utilised.
anything else???

Depend on the setting. Some of the ancient/medieval/renaissance stuff could be used for Turkish and Arab types. Some early WWII stuff might also fit as well.

I'm not buying ainy long-term shares in steampunk. My nose suggests it'll be smelling a bit stale in a few years.

As a 'more fun than goth' alternative clothing style, probably.  But steampunk alt-Victoriana on the wargame table is decades old already.  Years from now you'll be able to field a force of pith-hlment clad British soldiers defending Her Majesty's Martian colonies from green man attacks without looking any wierder than any other miniature wargamer out there.

Bu then, an alt-Victoriana game has been on my bucket list for a good long while now, so I would say that.

a) Space 1899 the important SteamPunk RPG was first published in 1988 and continues to generate interest so I think Steam Punk is a bit more than a flash in the pan.
b) Pendraken's range of Dungeon Monsters has a number of items that would make good Alien horrors. DN4, 42, 46 and 62 all have potential in different environments. DN4 for example is a natural in arid environments and DN42 would work well in Jungles or Swamps.
c) Pendraken's superb Giant Worms are also worth a look.
d) Steampunk has quite a healthy niche retail presence on the web. For example a number of people sell packets of old watch gears and the like which would be ideal to punkify some of Pendrakens WW1 and Interwar vehicles. Of course Pendraken could produce a kit of , for example Smoke Stacks, Boilers and Flywheels to do the job specifically.
