What ho chaps,
I know these have been mentioned before, but I'm not a great thread necromancer...
Please may we have some Picts/Scots-Irish/Heavier Saxons/Generic warband so that the later Western Roman Army I'm slowly building has someone to beat up?
I know Clib was muttering about Goths a while back, and tehre are Sassaninds and Armenians around, but from this armies Brittanic-Centric (can't be Anglo-Centric, they haven't invaded yet) viewpoint, I'd like something 'local' to play against...

Mad Lemmey
PS No rush, it'll be at least two years before my Romans are done ;)
These all sound good. Count me in!
Have my vote!
Add my vote for these.
Steve
These would fit in perfectly with my next project, so make that a 'yes please' from me.
Cheers,
Kev
I am definitely interested in this as well.
There are a bunch of figures in other Pendraken ranges that can be impressed into a dark age Alban Scots army if you are looking for more variety on a base.
For my dark age Alban Scots, I am using some Medieval Welsh, Anglo Saxons (without kite shields), and Spanish slingers.
Yes, I'd certainly like to see some Picts. Limited Saxons in the Late Roman range and the potential to mix in some Norse for more variety there. I managed to source dogs and Irish from other manufacturers, but nobody seems to do 10mm Picts.
Suggested packs might include:
Assorted warriors (javelins/spears, little square shields)
Noble warriors
Command
Crossbowmen mixed or seperatley with conventional bowmen
add my vote please.
Things I'd also like to see in the range:
Farm animals, carts and generic battlefield 'dressing' - these could cover multiple era's.
I've got a few 'farm' animals on the go at the moment Nosher...(and a crocodile !!)
They're a bit of a 'back-burner' project for the time being...But I'll work through them as time permits ;)
Cheers - Phil.
These would be really useful given the homogenous nature of most European enemies of Rome. Only the shield shapes differed significantly.
Point of order though... 'Picts' and 'Dark Ages'?
Aren't they anachronistic?
:-B :D
Technically yes; but since the pictish states exist prior to and until MacAlpine unites the Scots, which is after the fall of the Empire in the west, it counts... :P
They didn't actually use crossbow as military weapons, did they?
Well, since the Picts didn't have a military i'd say 'no'.
Hehe...
I'm in such a mischievous mood today. ;D
The historical evidence for 'Picts' is sparse at best, but it does appear that they used primitive 'crossbows' for both hunting and war fighting, typically in a skirmishing role.
Hunting I'd heard of.
:P
Think it's the perfect raiding game, picts crossing the 'wall' - and it gives Kiera someone to lead! ;)
Any-ways - the point I was trying to make was that for a certain amount of time in the Later Empire, there are whole hordes of hairy barbarians causing all sorts of issues for the garrison of Britannia and Northern Gaul. these same tribes don't just stop in the 400s when the garrison is withdrawn/denuded, so can roll into the 'Dark Ages', perfect for 'Dux Bratannicum/Dux Bellorum/Hail Cheesy' games :P :
Caledonian remnants
Pictish raiders
Scots-Irish
Early Saxons beyond Clibs's one pack in the Later Roman stuff.
Sea Raiders (Frisians et al, probably for runners of Scandinavian trader/raiders)
Otherwise, all the Late Romans have to fight is themselves (which they did most of the time anyway)! :-\
Can I add my vote to Some Picts!
Can I add a vote for these - thanks

Thread necromancy, because it's worth it...
I have opened the cheque book and so far Phil has sculpted:
Warriors w spear x2
Bowmen x2
Crossbowmen x1
Javelin armed skirmishers x1
Light cavalry
Chieftain on foot and mounted
Horn blower
I must say he's done a great job. Hopefully get some updated photos up here in a whole.
To be added:
Conversion of spearman to standard bearer
Naked skirmishers/fanatics from Gallic range conversions
Chariot crew from Gallic range conversions.
Female warriors are still a possibility FSN! ;)
Interestingly just been scouring the sites for Picts and Irish since I just saw the Lardies ad for the Dux Brittaniarum extension. Found Irish on the MM site. Don't think anyone does 10mm Picts for the Dark Ages though.
Pendraken should soon, given time, as I hoping these will go into production for the public! ;)
Robert has posted loads of converted Picts from a variety of Kallistra ranges on his Blog:
http://flownlegions.blogspot.co.uk/2014/03/pict-me-winner.html
It shows what could be done with existing Pendraken ranges and plenty of time and commitment! Or you can wait and see if Lemmeys stuff goes on general release...

Any ETA on these hitting the shelves of my local Pendraken warehouse?
Techno was packing them off to HQ this week, along with a couple of cavalry and command types!
Late summer I would guess.
Surely it doesn't take 4 months to get from Wales to Middle Borough? :-\

Remember they've only got very little legs.

Yes, I will be buying many many many of these...
Must get some for Dux Britanniarum extension. Will these be for general release?
8-> Can't wait for some of these! I will pick up a few, but I know my chief opponent is waiting to put together a Pictish host for Dux Bellorum to be beaten up by my lads.
Nice
Reckon they could double as Irish as well
Some might fill in as variant Gauls too.

Hello Mr M.
Are you by any chance the same M that Agent 007 mentions in his memoirs?
Welcome to the forum, Admiral.
Or, indeed, Dorothy's aunt?
Are these Picts likely to be available soon. Should be able to cobble together some Irish until the Picts put in an appearance.

Not in the immediate future, there's a few other things which need moulding up first. They shouldn't be too far away though.
Any news? ;)
Yes, Mafeking has been relieved. By jingo!

PICTS!
Sure it wern't shovels....
Anyway arn't Picts like viking horned helmets - a Victorian invention.

If they are, then they'll double up for Barbarians!

It's just PICTS are easier to write than 'Brocht dwelling P-Celtic post Romano, stone carving, North Eastern Hiberno-Highland culture'!

ianS ;D
I resemble that remark!
No, they both existed all right. The Victorians made up stuff about naked women Pictish warriors covered in tatoos ; and vikings wearing horned helmets. We don't know much about the Picts but Roman and post-Roman historians mention them repeatedly, though not with much detail - and they didn't leave much in the way of historical records themselves.

It's not quite so bad at the moment, thankfully.
Slight problem here, on the 'farm', with Mrs T's gall stones, which keep 'flaring up' and giving her grief.
Sooooo.....I'm trying to help with the horsey chores, as much as possible.
Yesterday I told her to stay in bed all day, while I mucked all the stables out.
By the time I'd pushed the umpteenth barrow load of poop up Mount Kilimanjaro the muck heap, my back was telling me to blank off.
Cheers, again - Phil.
Send Mrs T our best.
From the Western Daily Mail 6th April
"An extremely old man was in hospital again today just days after being released. He was loaded into the ambulance face down by paramedics wearing protective gear, all the while shouting 'buzzy things, he definitely said buzzy things'. Animal welfare experts were called in to rescue 1000 bees some of which had to be destroyed as they were too traumatised to save.
The man's neighbours have been offered counselling, but declined as it was better than S4C.
Doctors later described his condition as improbable."
;D ;D ;D
Hope the back and Mrs Matron are better soon. :)
Many thanks all.....So far, so good, today !
Fingers crossed !!
