Title: My first foray into 10mm! ACW Confederates
Post by: jdeleonardis on 17 May 2012, 11:41:23 AM
First of all - I have a confession to make, and also total disclosure.  I have sinned!  I think the dead guy is Magister Militum.  For what its worth, the quality of that fig isnt as good as the standing figures!

Anyway, this was my first 'test unit' of 10mm ACW Confederate figures.  I LOVE them!  What incredible detail on such little guys!  Kudos to the sculptor (Leon?)  Im missing a command unit, but I currently have an outstanding order to rectify that :)

On to a couple pics

Thanks for looking!  I picked up these figures, as well as several Carthaginians and elephants at Salute.  They are next on my 10mm list!

Haha, if only!  My sculpting abilities have never gone further than sticking bones on Trolls...  The current ACW range was actually sculpted by Keith Warren at Realistic Modelling if memory serves me!

Thank you for all of the nice comments everyone!  :)

I FINALLY got around to finishing a command stand for the original unit.  I also changed up how I based the original stands - I think I like the new way better.

Love the butternut shades and the lack of 'light grey' which is what the Rebs are usually painted in.

You technique is also top grade; very well done sir.

Just thought Id share another group of Confederates ive done in the last week or so.  Mostly Pendraken, but there are a few Blaze Away in here as well (hope thats ok?!?).

These are based for 'Piquet: Field Of Battle'.

Ive ordered a small lot of the 'new' ACW figures and I intend to make them into Hoods Texans and some of JEB Stuarts cav.

I am a bit obsessed with flags.
The way they fold...

If you look at these pictures, there's almost always some kind of diagonal fold across a flag.

You could use fine pliers to add more folds...

Excellent painting! Flag folds can be tricky - I find folding before the glue dries, and being quite severe with the folding, works best as the flag inevitably springs out slightly while the glue is drying.

Hi there
Very nicely painted figures.  But I do agree with Barbarian, that flags look much better for being folded and a little bit of battle damage added.

Take care

Andy

Thank you all very much!  Yeah, I agree about the flags, but to be honest, I cant do them for sh!t, so I have gone to just doing one little 'wrinkle' across them.  I find that Im either using too much glue or not enough glue and the print comes off and its just a mess....

Hey Phil, is that for me?  The background?

I did that myself.  I created an image through some free piece of editing software I have, and then printed it out on the color printer at work.  I may still have the file if you want me to send it to you?  If I dont, I can create one easily enough...

I always find the flags easier to bend and shape if you paint over them first, I think it ties them in with the unit better as well

It certainly was J.

I used to use that as a background for all sorts of stuff, cos it works so well (Oh alright, it does to my eyes  ;))......Used to buy that as a 'Letraset' A1, A2 (?) sheet from office suppliers...But I guess everyone prints their own off nowadays....(Hah !....Probably for years now.)
I've only got an A4 size printer at home....So I'm not sure whether it would work.

Hey !.... But I know I've got I've got a contact now. ;)
Thanks for the offer....May well take you up on that at some stage.  ;)
Cheers - Phil

For what its worth, what you see in my pics is only on an A4 printer.  The bigger stuff (larger units or whatnot) dont really work on it, but I find I do mostly smaller things anyway!

Here is a link and an image - not sure if you will need the actual file to make it work right.

Wow, thank you guys very much!  Im honored!

I tend to paint in layers, darkest to light - "the Dallimore system" if you will,  But for 10s, I typically skip the mid layer.  So, there is quite a large contrast between the base layer and the top highlight layer.  Also, for ACW Confederates, I used all of my greys and browns until I was sick of seeing greys and browns!  And then, I used more greys and browns!   ;)

Here are my first batch of the 'new' sculpts from Pendraken.  Great little sculpts, as usual.

And, just for posture, here is a comparison pic of new (left) and old (right) sculpts (there could be some Blaze Away minis in there too  :-[).  The old are actually quite a bit bigger, but they will look fine in separate units!!!

That's a turn-up for the books. With most manufacturers it's a case of the new range usually dwarfs the old one. Trust Pendraken to reverse the trend!  ;)
