Title: Sci Fi Project - "Aliens" Inspired
Post by: Si Tyler on 22 March 2012, 09:24:48 PM
Next 10mm project is some Sci Fi skirmish type get up.  I am looking at a "travel" type game to keep the kids from being bored on holiday (lie, its for me really, I can always play solo ;))

Currently building the terrain, the figures are on order but sat in the Pendraken waiting to ship pile so I can get ahead of the game.

http://anyonenotfinished.pbworks.com/w/page/52138374/Sci%20Fi%20-%20Terrain (http://anyonenotfinished.pbworks.com/w/page/52138374/Sci%20Fi%20-%20Terrain)

No photos up yet, but gathering ideas and bits of plastic to stick together.  I am using what is at home in the bits box (which turns out to be quite a lot of styrene).  Walls are going to be 20mm high on the rooms and corridors.  Elevations can be accessed by either ladders or ramps.  I am toying with a 3d reverse pyramid.  Ground level with most of the criss crossing and interconnections in the middle of a square with the upper levels on the outer perimeters each time you go up a level.  This might completely crash and end up being a single level but aspiration as everything is there

As this is only going to be 50 or so figures I didn't think a painting diary would be necessary but will see how the terrain building goes.

First mock ups and lessons identified.

Overview.  The Lego in the background is to make sure the angles are 90 degrees.  I haven't quite got that right yet though as some of the corridors have ended up a shade narrower.  Either need to sand these down or go for 15mm round bases  rather than 20mm  :-[ both of which I think I have on order

Medium Straight with pipe.  I might drop the pipe and replace with panels.

Medium Room with no detail

These will be sprayed black later this morning as while White is my preference it doesn't set the mood.

Real world takes over for a while.

I have set myself a task of making one room or corridor section per day for the next two weeks (might be two corridors if they are simple sections).  It won't be a lot of stuff but I am hoping to add some "specials" such as the meeting lab or the crew room from the Nostromo. As with all my projects I make it up as I go along so hadn't done any planning.  I have had a morning of cutting out "standard" components and fixing some of the earlier ideas that didn't work out.  I have undercoated all the original set.  Kids have been playing Frag on the game board today and want to know when the real one is going to be finished so I have some pressure on to keep this going along with all the other stuff.

Really admire your balls (and modelling skills too!)

For me this is a trip too far, given that out of 10 my modelling skills skills come in somewhere in the -8 region :-[ hence jobs like this are off limits to me.

It might be my imagination (and probably IS given my brain is quite small, smooth and food/alcohol obesessed) but there was talk at some point of PD doing a Sci-fi/Aliens-esque dungeon. I've never been a dungeoneer, but Space Hulk was and still is a fabulous game (which although I own a copy of the recent re-hash, I really dont game enough of).

I might just have to see if the way in which I based my PD aliens and Coloinial Marines might fit on Space Hulk Tiles as there might just be a game there looking to be hashed!

Looking forward to seeing how your efforts turn out

Couple of in progress shots with detail being added.  Sorry about the quality of the image will try and do something with these.  Decals didn't take long to make up and are on "white" decal paper.  I want to leave a reasonable amount of dark areas.  I could have painted them but as I had to make images anyway I thought why not.  It also keeps the markings consistent.

Currently waiting for wife to get out of bed (oh for the joy of daylight saving time) so can print off more decals (hazard chevrons and level markings for the ladder piece) to get this one ready for varnishing

Sundays and sharp implements....maybe it is an age thing.  Deciding to press down on the scalpel to make an mark on the plastikcard I am using for the walls for some reason forgot that the sharp side was uppermost.  Result more second skin applied and no TLC this time round.  SWMBO muttered about once is an accident, second time.....

I have now made up a couple of decals for hazard markings which just about go on but need a quick coat of Microsol to fold over

I am rethinking this as I go (because I am lazy) and secondly while meandering down passage ways is fine to a point, I actually want something to investigate or fight your way out of.

I have one more this size (7 x 7) and two which are 7 x 4 to build.  They are interlinked by the corridors already made up but I need four 2 length corridors to join properly.  As the 7 x 7 took about an hour to put together including cutting out the pieces I think I can catch up my plan for this quickly

I have modified some of the earlier items like this one as I try new things out.

Once the four building blocks are done then it will be internal terrain items.  I have ordered the alien boxed which hopefully will arrive tomorrow as "she" is out and I can sit in front of the TV with the pause button and make some notes.

I want to try and get half the building blocks done before order 4595 arrives and diverts me off to paint figures

Haven't got as far as I want with this one.  Postman hasn't arrived so have only done "generic" bits so far.  Changed the manufacturing process slightly Floors, Walls, End Pieces then add the side blocks as I couldn't get the walls to stay straight.

This is all that I have done so far (inch scale on the cutting mat)

Decal sheet made up for tonight.  SWMBO appears quite happy for me to sit in the Living room sticking these on as it doesn't require sharp implements  only safety scissors which I can be trusted with apparently ;)

I quite like the font that I found
(http://i178.photobucket.com/albums/w252/Stormpoint/Sci%20Fi/SciFiTerrain-27Mar003.jpg)

Not too sure about the bigger decal just yet, but I will finish off the whole hab module first.  I need to decide what I am going to do for the internals.  Probably go for a "magnolia" or similar neutral colour
(http://i178.photobucket.com/albums/w252/Stormpoint/Sci%20Fi/SciFiTerrain-27Mar010.jpg)

Time to go as postman has just arrived possibly with package for me

This mornings discussion with my youngest was that we should limit the "corridors" to represent things like airducts etc and have larger room units to game over.  After browsing the net etc I sort of agree with him.  The flash game plus shots from the "Aliens" boardgame seem to drive me to bigger rooms and It is easier to build a room than work out a connecting set of corridors.

Camera has gone with the eldest skiing so no shots for two weeks while I get some more ideas (and plastic card)

Also any suggestions for Sentry Guns in this scale ?

How about GR21 from the German WW2 range? With a bit of green stuff it couldn't be that hard?

I have a copy of the floor plans for Sniper BUG HUNT the colony and the space ship also look out for the old Traveller books they have some good plans for ships and the likes, Are you going to leave the pipes and cables exposed on the lower levels if so go into Poundland in there gardening section they do a plastic coated wire which i bought to make tree's but it would be great for large pipes and £1 for 5 or 6 Metres and i think they do different gauges
Hope this helps if you want the Bug hunt plans i will try and scan them into a pdf

Thanks for the offer Martin,  I have been busy this week collecting all the floor plans from the "Aliens" boardgame and now think I have enough material to get some ideas sorted out.  I was an avid traveller fan in my long distant past, my attic has all the floor plans  etc up until IIRC Broadsword.  There is an "alien" encounter on the one with the space station.  Might have to go up in the attic and have a look tomorrow when painting (sorry meant to say working from home)

I thnk the one you are after is the Darthenon Queen i gave my copy to my mate we still play about once in 4 or 5 years the Sniper bug hunt game has some intersting action cards which give the Aliens random atributes each game also weapon effects: EG: in one game an assault rifle annoyed the alien giving it an attack bonus but a cattle prod killed it dead if you i can e-mail you them, Also how do you print the decals?

Thanks for the offer.  Si dot tyler at blueyonder dot co dot uk

The decal paper is from http://www.craftycomputerpaper.co.uk/default.aspx (http://www.craftycomputerpaper.co.uk/default.aspx)  in terms of how you print it, set the paper type to photo glossy and set the DPI to about 600 or better.

my guide to decals is here http://anyonenotfinished.pbworks.com/w/page/9770774/Home-Made-Decals (http://anyonenotfinished.pbworks.com/w/page/9770774/Home-Made-Decals) which might be of use

Are you planning alien infested corridor sections? Maybe with poor victims attached to the walls?

Camera is away for a week so no shots to post but the hab block is nearly finished and the ops block has the base coat done.  The aliens are all painted (when I say all, I mean the ones I am going to use!) I need to go back to the drawing board a bit as they are a bit bigger than I expected and need to gon on a 20mm base so one or two of the corridors don't have sufficient tolerance for the base (always a problem scratch building).

Marines are based and undercoated and will see some paint later in the week.  I am away with work so these wont be finished before April 15th

I have asked Leon for some "bodies" to go with the face huggers and the eggs. The "reactor" room from the films has some possibilities but as I want my kids to play this as well might have to tone done the scary aspects a bit.

Sorry, work has gotten in the way of hobbies for a couple of months.  The font is the Terminator font (Terminator NFI) which is availble as a freebie from a number of sources.  Must cough to also using the bases for another project.  New order in with Minibits and see if I can regain on this
