Title: SCW Republican Army uniforms
Post by: mijalo on 03 March 2012, 06:38:53 PM
Just a request for a recommendation on paint;
Which Vallejo colour is most suitable for painting the uniforms of SCW Republican troops?

Its some time since I painted SCW Reps. Model painters will always tell you to go lighter with small scale,so khaki in 10mm will look lighter than a figure in say 25mm.  I followed the Osprey guide and went for Coot d'arms 537 'faded khaki' for regular units.  Vallejo 921 may be the closest, but I am sure the SWC buffs can give you a heads up on 988 and 923 as contenders. If you have International Brig in your OFB - you can vary the shades a little. Blandford Press  show the Aberham Lincoln Battalion in blue flannel shirts and a motley varity of surplus brown breeches.  Basque troops for example are shown in brown cord trousers.  I would recommed that Osprey Spanish Civil War publication.

Hope this is helpful.

Hello.
Good informacion are the plates from Jose Mª Bueno. He is a spanish artist, painting uniforms with a very particular style.
Colors in these plates use to be too clear, but it´s good for you, because you need lighter colours, as it has been said.

You must understand that there is nothing like an uniform in the SCW. Old army uniforms get worn with use, so new uniforms were produced in any kind of colour or shade.

As a trick, I use to paint National Army (not nationalists) with khaki green colours, and Republican Army with sand colours. It´s not very real, but it makes a realistic difference.
