Title: Curaissers and Dragoons WW1 German
Post by: Si Tyler on 27 February 2012, 09:51:23 PM
While I like the Uhlan and the Lance was standard equipment on all German cavalry I could do with a simple Picklehaube helmet to represent the Curaisser and Dragoon Regiments.  It would also means that the command figure in the Uhlan pack isn't wasted

The uniform didn't really change in cut from 1870 as I recall, just became field grey with piping appropriate to regiments?
1870 Dragoon should double up nicely, aprt from they are carrying carbines.

Hate to be picky, but the cuirassiers didn't actually wear the pickelhaube. They continued to wear the cuirassier helmet with a cloth cover up until 1916, when the whole army went over to the stahlhelm. The cuirassier helmet had more of a "lobster tail" - a bit like an ECW helmet - and fairly distinctive.

Oh, and they also carried the nine-foot length of sharpened piping that the Germans thought of as a "lance" - but no lance pennon.

First of all, I second the request...more early war cavalry for the Germans would be nice. We have French Dragoons and Cuirassiers, the whole range of early Austrian cavalry but only 1 type for the Germans.
Unfortunatelly it's not possible to use the 1870 casts.. all German cavalry used the lance by 1914 and the cuirassiers no longer wore their cuirasses.
What could be possible would be a head switich between the 1870 casts and the 1914 Uhlans, but who wants to do that in 10mm ? ???

Excellent painting on the figures! I'll like to see them when there are finished. Plus I'll add my vote for more German cavalry

Can you give me a picture reference please (side on), as my Osprey and WW1 Source book only show front view with Spike, I probably wont scratch build the neck protection so I had generalised the pickelhaube.

So the request is for Early War German Cavalry,
Dragoon
Cuirassier
Hussar

Si,

I don't have a postable picture of the helmet. The best reference I have is Cuirassiers and Heavy Cavalry by D.S.V. Fosten, published by Almark in 1972, which shows several examples up to 1914. Your local library might be able to get you a copy. I've tried the Web, but what pictures there are don't show the reverse of the headgear.

Sorry.  :(

Hi all,

here are some contemporary postcards form Germany, which show the different types of helmets

Dragoons:

Hussars:

Ulanen:

Cuirassiers:

and yes, I've used the heads from the 1914 German Infantry for the Dragoon Conversions, but I'm going to take the heads of the 1870 Cuirassiers and Hussars for building the 1914 version of them.

I'll add some more German cav to the requests and we'll see what we can get done.
