Title: New AVBCW masters!
Post by: Leon on 10 February 2012, 08:06:37 AM
With the continued growth in popularity of AVBCW gaming, plus the amount of people doing it in 10mm, it was definitely worth getting some more figures done for it, so we picked up these beauties from Snafu at the York show last weekend!  I'm sure he's got more planned, but I'll let him comment on what's coming next!

First off, we've got some 'Jolly Good Chaps', with shotgun/hunting rifle/rifle:
(http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7008/6850497641_22c4d146b5.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/pendraken/6850497641/)

Next up is a set of British Bobby's, all with rifles:

And bringing up the rear is an excellent set of Partizans, with will serve quite happily as French Resistance fighters as well.  These come with SMG or rifles:

And well done Leon and Dave for getting the commissioned.

They're on my want list  :D

POlice would be more correct with shotguns, often rather short, Liverpool City used one with a 20" barrel, which would be prohibited today. An interestesting figure would be 6th former from public school with rifle, there were more weapons in HMC schools than in ploice hands in the 30's.

Cheers,

Excuse me for my ignorance, I have seen some pics and reports of A very British Civil War in blogs, and I am quite interested in but my question is:

Is it a ruleset? if so, where I can find it,

Is it inspirated in a book, comic, TV production or something?

Can you resume the plot in two lines (the date, the armies confronted and so on)?

thank you in advance

Other people will be able to tell you better than me, but it was started by Solway I believe: http://solwaycraftsandminiatures.webs.com/ (http://solwaycraftsandminiatures.webs.com/)

There's more info on several websites, and if you do a search on the Forum here, it throws up a lot of threads.

The period can be gamed using a wide range of rules. I use BKC but others use RoE etc. A set of rules has recently been produced by the creators of the AVBCW period, Solway Games. Details can be found on the following links which should answer most of your questions.

http://gwargamesp.18.forumer.com/index.php?showforum=4

A couple of AARs can be found below which should give you an idea of games in 10mm.

Hope this helps?

In a nutshell it is a fictional British civil war set in the late 1930s. There are assorted sides with different continental support. A lot of the fun seems to be that people are creating local forces based on their own area.

No its not.
You can use whatever rules and figures you feel like.

Want small groups of protagonists squabbling over a local village?  Legends of the Old West and 10-12 figures will do.
Want large scale warfare with tank divisions, armoured trains and swarms of militia?  Blitzkrieg Commander with as many Pendraken figs as you can muster!

However, Solway have been working on an 'official' ruleset (Brigade '38) which i believe they use for their 'big games'.  http://solwaycraftsandminiatures.webs.com/brigadier38vbcw.htm (http://solwaycraftsandminiatures.webs.com/brigadier38vbcw.htm)

Here's the concept http://gwargamesp.18.forumer.com/index.php?showtopic=1689 (http://gwargamesp.18.forumer.com/index.php?showtopic=1689)

In two lines?  Tricky!

In 1938, Edward VIII marries Mrs Simpson ('that woman'), refuses to abdicate and with the collapse of support from the British government installs his friend Oswald Moseley and his British Union of Fascists as the new British Government.

Pretty much everyone else, from the Communists and Socialist coal miners, to the Anglican Church sees this as jolly bad form and a very British civil war ensues, where the battles a fought in the spirit of fair play more usually seen on the cricket pitch.

I agree with Ian,  shotguns would be more correct than rifles for the police.  A Bolt action Martini Shotgun was issued to colonial police forces in the 20's and 30's.
Barrels of less than 24" are not prohibited, they just have to be on a firearms licence not a standard shotgun certificate, the same as a semi auto that can take more than 3 shells.

But short barreled, and semi-auto shotguns never get the licence.

But in AVBCW, the police have acquired all manner of weapons including bolt action rifles, LMGs, HMGs, mortars, etc.

Most police have various 'divisions' typically 'Bobbies' (traditionally armed for day-to-day duties, perhaps with the addition of pistols), 'armed' (main fighting police with whatever firearms they can muster), 'auxiliaires' (similar to LDVs but working for the police, to bulk out their numbers in open battle, or to take on duties such as manning roadblocks).

I would suggest...

I agree Luddite. If my Brigands can nick themselves motorbikes, quads, Lewis guns, the odd SMG then I'm pretty sure the Old Bill aren't going to have any problem appropriating some decent kit  :D

Ian - don't forget that there wasn't really A Very British Civil War - it's all made up...pure fantasy  ;)  :P ;D

The police figures are based on the info from the AVBCW source books, in line with the 28mm equivelant ranges, as are all the figures in this range. They are done this way so that gamers familiar with the books and backgrounds can associate with the forces they are building. In the end it is a fictitious period to a certain extent and as luddite so rightly says in they can be armed with all manner of weapons.

I've always rather liked the idea that the coppers are more interested in subduing and arresting 'wrong doers' in battle rather than killing them!

Peelers with clubs, shields and handcuffs as assault troops.   ;D

Sgt. Plod: 'Right Dixon, those slovenly Reds over their behind the barricade are blocking the King's Highway in contravention of the Road Traffic Act.  Take your men up there and arrest them, there's a good chap'.

Cstbl Dixon: 'They've got rifles sir'.    *Glances nervously at his own weapons; a truncheon and handcuffs*

Sgt Plod: 'You have your orders Dixon'.

One of the biggest growing shooting sports is practical shotgun, where 7 shot or even 10 shot are a common. Having just tried out one at my local club  I am just putting in for mine.  Been told there should be no problems with getting it.

Not at the moment unfortunately, they should have been moulded by now really, but with the move and trying to get the ACW & Falkland's ready, they've ended up on the back burner.  We've just moved the mould press into the unit as well, so we should be able to get going on a lot more moulds now.

Yeah, they're still in the drawer...  :(

Once we get past the ACW release at the start of July, and the Falkland's at the Birthday Bash, I'll try and get these jumped into the August releases.

Leon, are the partizans in production at all I couldn't find them anywhere when I looked for them.

Also, could I request more partizans / resistance, especially female partizans, as we don't have nearly enough of them. More troops on bicycles would be nice too.

Dave's done the mould for them, I think they'll be coming in the next batch of releases, in the French range I believe.

I bought the first Solway VBCW book when it first came out but have actually struggled to do anything with it, despite being very excited by it. I did have some sort of campaign idea that leant heavily on pulp fiction (not the film) and boys own adventures and would have involved Indiana Jones being working on behalf of the American government trying to prevent the British Union of Fascists from finding Excalibur under Glastonbury Tor, a mythical weapon that would make Mosley immortal and all powerful. It was going to have all sorts of protagonists including an aged Biggles etc, but like many of my daydreams never saw the light of day.

Saying that though I do have a hankering to make a local based on Bristol dock workers unions supported by Russian commisars.

Any chance the partizans will be available for York? If not can any one suggest some codes I could use for mill workers for AVBCW? Looking to use Osprey's World Aflame, initialy looking at 30 figures a side so a variety of poses would be nice.

Thanks in advance.
